News & updates Stealth Mission 89

Post image

I wanted to share a project (Stealth Mission 89) that might interest fans of classic combat flight sims, that some of you probably still are.

You can currently fly two aircraft, the F-117A and the F-16C, each with its own flight model (classic or modern) and cockpit. It also features a dynamic campaign, multiplayer, VR support, head tracking, HOTAS support, clickable cockpit instruments, and weather effects.

You can play on your PC (like any other game), or directly in your web browser.

100% free and open-source. I am not the main developer of this project but I think it brings back the nostalgia of the combat flight sims from the 90s. Come play with us and (if you want) contribute to the project.

What kind of stealth mechanics does it have? It may get removed if off topic.

Heya! It's a bit like Thief - there's a meter that shows how visible you are to enemy radar, and whenever a search radar pulse hits the airplane it'll show how strong that pulse is. The two values are shown on a bar graph, growing from opposite ends. If they overlap then you count as detected, which has a variety of consequences, including the enemy scrambling fighters, getting a tracking lock on you, and ultimately lobbing a missile in your direction. The radars in the game have different types. Some you have to travel perpendicular to to minimize detection, and others you need to travel straight to / from in order for them to not see you. Any deviation from the optimal angle increases the chance of detection. This is the same gameplay mechanic as in the Microprose game "F117A Stealth Fighter 2.0"

This isn't entirely realistic, for starters the F117 didn't have an RWR, or at least none of the books I have on that plane say it did. But that would make for boring gameplay.

This is rad! Thanks for sharing it. I'm not quite ready to share it, but I've been making this (with AI, of course)... https://github.com/TideGear/OpenNighthawk
