This is extremely specific.

FNAF fans

Undertale fans

resident evil fans

And many more, having to deal with people like this.

Its not ''extremly specific'' as you think. And right now the topic is getting too much attention in the spanish gaming community

redditors when you tell them to actually engage with art beyond a superficial "all cutscenes 4k uhd updated 2026, all boss fights no damage 4k"

Yeah, i tought these people were only on twitter, they are also on reddit.

Sad moment to be part of a community xDD

has anyone here other than op ever seen anyone like this

I’ve never played a Fallout game and watched all the cutscenes on YT because I love the lore. Same with Warhammer and Star Wars (seen the movies, no books)

Don’t have much time to game outside of work and my sport, so I end up playing Pokemon. Guess I’m a leech 😂

But you play games anyway. You watched star wars movies.

Warhammer has way too many other options that are outside of the games, so its also valid.

You love the lore of fallout, not the game, you said it yourself, so its valid too.

You are good, dude. The problem is about people who didn't even touch the control because they have lame excuses that don't apply to them

Super common in certain fandoms like Persona, Undertale, Danganronpa, etc.

u/Familiar_Ice7672 14d ago

Don't forget Resident Evil. Requiem especially brought on a lot of posers that just watch TikTok shorts and then insert themselves into discussions about the games, lore and gameplay.

u/Due_South9252 14d ago

Don't forget resident evil village, a lot of people only watched porn of lady dimitrescu, and they call themselves a fan of her.

I'd argue people in the Undertale fandom are more familiar with the porn and memes of characters than the actual game.

Add FNAF to that list

Feels like kind of a non-issue to me ngl. I’ve watched more games than I’ve played them for many reasons and had a good time. I still play games though when I can but ADHD sucks. And I don’t mean poor attention span by that… no, I mean finally getting to play the damn game at 4am lol

Also there are games that are just more fun to watch than play

But you play games. The meme is about people that put many excuses and yet they have the chance to play said games they are "fans" of, no matter if it is by legal means. You are also not claiming to be a fan. And yes, you can be a fan of the story, or the characters, but that will make you a fan of the story or the characters, not the game as a game. You can have a good time by watching someone else playing the game, but that won't make you a fan of the game as a game.

UPDATE: The fact that this comment is getting way too many negative points, it shows me how wrong people in this subreddit is, full of condescending people who accept anybody in their communities just because they self proclaim to be fans. If everybody is a fan, nobody is, as simple as that.

u/Moose_M 15d ago

Does that mean people who only watch sports but dont play them aren't actually fans of the sport?

Five nights at freddys fan here: ive played the games but a majority of the fanbase hasnt, most of them are kinda hard as shit and they all got popular through lets plays and theory videos. So its extremely common for a fnaf fan to have never played them. I do not care at all if youve never booted up a fnaf game in your life and are participating in the community. You are welcome too (unless you criticize the gameplay or something you would actually need to have played to speak on)

You dont need to take in every aspect of something to be a fan of it. Ask anyone whos worne a band t-shirt.

I feel like your problem with this person is that they are not a passive consumer. Its that they are actively not consuming haha

2

u/Due_South9252 14d ago

Yeah, thats the point. But as the description says, its an old starter pack that i found many years ago. And the topic is active right now in the spanish community, so someone shared that image again. Its an issue that is affecting a lot of fandoms, undertale, resident evil, fnaf, sonic, and many others.

Its a very active problem that caused a lot of people to abandon fandoms until things calm down, until posers leave

Judging from the defensive replies the meme hit the nail on the head lmfao

3

u/iStoleTheHobo 14d ago

I don't even know what it is attempting to say...

1

u/Due_South9252 14d ago

Reading comprehension is strong on reddit i see.

1

u/iStoleTheHobo 13d ago

Oh please.

2

u/Due_South9252 14d ago

One of my comments went straight to the point, and it got so many negative points.

I don't know if they are passive consumer, but i am sure they are condescending people

I dont claim to be a fan of games I haven't played, but 99% of the time I prefer watching a game to playing it myself.

I do enjoy watching play throughs of games as a form of entertainment, but I dont actually enjoy playing video games or really any form of game in general.

I would compare it to watching any other YouTube content or a TV show, just another modern form of entertainment

1

u/Due_South9252 14d ago

Your case is valid, simply because you are being honest, and you know how to use the word ''fan''.

You are good, dude

3

u/kinetic750 15d ago

You can be a fan even if you didn’t play just don’t larp

1

u/Due_South9252 14d ago

Yes, you can be a fan:

A fan of the story, or the characters, or the OST.

Not a fan of the game, because you haven't play the game, so you don't know how the game truly feels

4

u/fonk_pulk 15d ago

Im a big fan of hamburgers but I would never ever eat one or make one

3

u/GTA_Throwaway69420 14d ago

Not the entire comment section going "omg this is such a non issue" and getting super butthurt because OP grilled them.

Hot take, I think you can be a fan of a game you didn’t play. Like if you watched all the gameplay and know all the lore and the characters I feel like that counts. Obviously just don’t talk about the gameplay

2

u/Due_South9252 14d ago

Exactly. Anyone can be a fan of the idea, the art style, the OST, characters, story, but the gameplay, the core mechanic of a GAME, no.

My mom for example really likes the idea of kingdom hearts, being able to visit disney worlds and all that, but she will never play the games.

1

u/Altruistic_Mud_261 14d ago

The only exception I can really give are games like Opus Magnum. and that's because Opus magnum's gameplay is design.

1

u/Due_South9252 14d ago

I could mention doki doki literature club, because you just have to click, and it truly doesn't matter which girl you like the most.

8

u/anticentristfujo 14d ago

“I love games but I would NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER play one”

7

u/AntComfortable5970 14d ago

This is one of those you think doesn't exist until you encounter it in a specific fandom.

It's a big issue in stuff like say sonic where some fans legit only watch yt videos about the series and don't play the games or watch the show or read the comics (if they do read the comic, they're probably just watching a YT read through or review) and stuff like wh40k and DND where it's just yt lore fans.

Not an issue in and of itself but when they start messing up the general discussion of things it gets annoying. Lot of misinformed fans out there

This is so god damn specific is this a thing or are there people on discord you are mad at

6

u/AffectionateCoat2133 14d ago

I love the attempted having waving in the comments. Everyone's saying this is a non issue, but no one's saying it doesn't exist. Whole bunch of passive consumers outing themselves.

My question is kinda just who is this hurting? Like why do you care? I agree that often, gameplay is a meaningful part of how a story is conveyed and as such, the most complete way to experience them is to play them, but if some people don't wanna have the more complete experience, how is that anyone else's problem? You say it's like people who "pay with exposure", but they are notably 1) not consuming anything that wasn't already being provided for free and 2) often still participating in buying merchandise that enriches the game's creators, paying in money.

3

u/decaDecker 14d ago

it's just annoying, not genuinely harmful

you're not supporting the game like a normal player you don't understand the experience of the game like a normal player yet most people who do this insert themselves into the community as if neither of those things were true

being a passive consumer isn't inherently harmful, people who do it just lack awareness

Sure it’s not hurting anyone, but i don’t think it’s ridiculous to want hobby spaces to have people who actually like the hobby. It’s crazy that people are being called elitists because they want fans of game series to actually play the games
