A closer look at the eastern limb (arrival) and the western limb of the Sun (departure from the visible solar disc). The region in the NE has a complex magnetic field and could lead to increased flare activity over the next few days.

Relatively quiet Sun with only 2 sunspot groups on the solar disk. 4561 shows rapid growth and produced some C-class flares and CMEs (will most likely miss Earth). 4562 is rather simple, no growth. Coronal hole 07+ could bring some fast wind and aurora to high lats in some days.

A transequatorial coronal hole is facing Earth. Enhanced solar wind could arrive in ~3 days

Very low activity: a few B-class flares from Region 4560 near the west limb. Two CMEs off the NE limb aren't expected at Earth; no Earth-directed CMEs.

.

Solar wind was calm, slowing to ~350 km/s with no real southward Bz, and Earth stayed quiet. A small negative-polarity coronal hole stream plus possible glancing blows from Oct 21 CMEs could bring active conditions (Kp 4), maybe G1 (Kp 5), today. Quiet to unsettled Oct 26-27.

The fast solar wind from a negative polarity coronal hole is expected to reach Earth soon. Inside the fast wind, the Bz tends to swing north and south, which can bring several rounds of substorms at high latitudes.

Both Suns are from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory. The yellow Sun is visible light, with sunspot regions labeled with NOAA's flare chances, and the purple Sun is extreme ultraviolet, with coronal holes outlined in green.

Here is how AR 4560 (highest flare chances) evolved over the last 24 hours, in visible light (top) and the magnetic field (bottom).

Kp is a 3-hour average of activity around the globe, so NOAA's Kp forecast can miss short substorms. Use real-time tools to catch them.

This is the Sun on July 19th, 2000 with SN=353. This is the Sun on the day with the highest sunspot number in Solar Cycle 23.

Sunspot number remains around 70, as does the average for the month so far. It looks like we may be in for another crash: all active regions on the near side are west of the central meridian now.

A filament (or prominence) eruption occurred early on 17 October 2026 UTC day at/behind the southeastern limb of the Sun. Quite a large CME ('solar storm', not heading towards Earth) was produced.

A positive-polarity coronal hole is approaching the center of the Earth-facing disk. This is the correct polarity for the Russell-McPherron effect for this time of the year, so more south Bz and enhanced geomagnetic effects could be possible from this feature, but we will see!

A positively polarised coronal hole is approaching the central meridian of the Sun. That could mean there is an Increased chance of aurora in a week or so, especially at higher latitudes.
