Happy 10th Cake Day, r/snowboardingnoobs!

r/snowboardingnoobs was founded on September 25th, 2016 by u/joejance as a spinoff from the r/snowboarding sub. The very first post to the sub hit 10 days later. Congrats on 10 years!

The mods have spent the Northern Hemisphere off-season considering tweaks to make the sub more user-friendly. We're starting out the sub's 11th season by adding a subreddit wiki. We don't intend this to be a complete guide, but a summary of some of the most frequent advice for easy reference, plus pointers to favorite resources around the internet. It'll also have some basic info on interacting with the sub. For starters, we've added "How Do I Become a Snowboarder?" (tl;dr - get a lesson) and a guide to shooting video clips for feedback, partly stolen from r/skiing_feedback.

We also plan to continue dabbling with post flairs and some of Reddit's automation tools to help snowboarding noobs (who are also in many cases Reddit noobs) ask good questions and provide the right info when posting. An example is the automated "Overhang" flair, which flags those posts but also detects when a user is about to submit an overhang question and gives some general guidance on overhang.

Thanks for doing your part to make the sub what it is. Let's continue making it a place where noobs can be noobs and maybe even get some great advice sometimes!

Vans vs Salomon

I’ve been riding vans boots for the last ten years and do love them. I am pretty anti boa and pro lace but after lesson season I got quite a bit of heel lift, so am now open minded to a heel boa. I’m currently looking at some Salomon x approach vs some Vans Invado Pros. I work on mountain so am looking for something I can wear everyday. I have wider feet, am a 10.5 and no access to boot fitters At this current time so can’t try on. I only have experience with Salomon’s boards which has been pretty positive, so any experience or opinions are welcome.

Is it worth spending an extra £100 to get better boots?

Im finally getting my own gear this year after a couple seasons of rentals and am trying to decide what boots to get. Ive tried on both the Vans Aura Pro 2.0 and the Invado OG which both fit great. The Auras have double boas and are slightly stiffer for an extra £100 (£320 vs £237) while the Invados are I think laces with a side BOA. Im planning on snowboarding for about a month total this year so would it be worth getting the better pair?

Also any thoughts on the boots would be appreciated. The Bataleon Salsas also fit fairly well.

Thank you!

Foot Numbness While Snowboarding — Boot Issue or Binding Angles?

Hey everyone! I’m still somewhat of a beginner at snowboarding and wanted to get some advice from more experienced riders.

I recently bought all new gear from the Burton Flagship Store, where I had my feet properly measured and fitted for boots. I also had my boots heat molded to make sure they fit properly.

I’ve used the gear about 5–6 times on the mountain and have also spent some time wearing my boots around the house to help break them in.

However, whenever I go snowboarding, my feet start giving me a hard time after about 3–4 hours of riding. Sometimes it’s both feet, but it’s usually worse on my leading foot. They start getting numb and uncomfortable to the point where it affects how much I can enjoy the rest of the day.

I’m currently riding with a +15/-15 binding stance, and I’m wondering if my binding angles could be contributing to the discomfort or if it’s more likely a boot-fitting issue.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Would adjusting my binding angles help, or is there something else I should look into?

I’d appreciate any advice!

Boot sizing help

So I bought these Burton limelight boots in a size women’s 10. I’m typically a 9.5 in most shoes or will size up to a 10. In euro sizes I’m usually a 40. My mondo is 25 cm. Based on the Burton size chart these should absolutely fit me. But when I put them on my big toe can feel the tip of the boot. These are heat molds which I haven’t done so that will potentially help. I should also mention I bought these years ago and even though have only worn them a handful of times, returning them for a different size is not really an option. But when I have worn them my toes definitely get sore. Any thoughts? Like I said, I’m pretty certain these are my size? I just don’t know why they are so uncomfortable. Am I just a turd and this is how they are supposed to feel?

Looking for a Capita Indoor Survival 154cm

Hi everybody,

I've tried looking but for my first brand new board I'm wanting a certain board from last year which I know is already a huge ask. Does anyone know anywhere in Europe or even UK that has the 2025 board?

Even a used one at this point would be acceptable as long as it isn't wrecked. I'm in love with this art style!

Nebula FASE vs Ultra vs Force

Has anyone tried the Jones Nebula FASE bindings? How do they compare to the Union Force and Ultra?

I recently bought a Jones Mountain Twin 157 and I’m planning to get Ride Lasso boots.

I mainly want to focus on carving and smooth cruising on groomed resort runs, while also learning some jibs, still new to the sport.

I’ve been offered a brand-new pair of Nebula FASE 2027 bindings for €207.

Would you recommend the Nebula, or should I go with the Force or Ultra instead? I’m looking for something I can progress with for years.

Am I too Big?

Lost 100lbs and decided I wanted to try snowboarding. Currently 250lbs, 5’10.

Is it even possible? Are there other big guys on the hill? I work out 5 days a week and feel like I’m in the best shape I have ever been, but not sure if this is possible.

Helmet gap?

Is this gap between the helmet and goggles bad? I’m trying to find a helmet and goggle combo for cheap, and I like both of these, but the helmet has a flat brim and the goggles have a slight curve. Goggles also don’t reach the helmet on the sides. Planning on wearing a balaclava underneath. Does it work or should I keep looking?

Advice for a first-time snowboarder?

Hi everyone!

My friends and I are planning a ski/snowboard trip in the new year, and I’m hoping to give snowboarding a try for the first time! My friends are moderately experienced, but I’m a complete beginner.

I’ve tried skiing before and honestly didn’t enjoy it. I struggled to feel in control, couldn’t quite get the hang of pizza-ing, and found having my feet separate while also managing poles a bit overwhelming. I feel like I might enjoy snowboarding more, but am I being overly optimistic in thinking it might suit me better? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Since I don’t live near any resorts, I’m hoping to prepare as much as I can beforehand. I have a gym membership and plan to work on my strength, balance, and core, along with doing some balance exercises at home. I’ve also been looking into getting a balance board to help me get familiar with the stance and movements.

For those who snowboard, do you think these things would genuinely help a beginner feel more comfortable on the board? I know nothing can fully replicate being on snow, but I’d love to build some confidence before the trip.

I think my biggest hurdle will be getting over the fear of falling and hurting myself, but I’m willing to put in the work and give it a proper go!

I’d love to hear any advice, exercises, or tips you’d give someone starting from scratch. Am I being too optimistic about potentially enjoying snowboarding more than skiing, or has anyone else had a similar experience?

Thanks in advance!

TLDR: I’m going on a snowboarding trip with friends in the new year and will be a complete beginner. I didn’t enjoy skiing and felt like I had little control, so I’m hoping snowboarding might suit me better. Since I don’t live near a resort, I’m considering a balance board, gym workouts, and at-home balance exercises to prepare. Would these actually help, and am I being too optimistic about enjoying snowboarding more than skiing? Any beginner tips are welcome!

Board after DOA

Hi!
I'm thinking about changing my snowboard.
I currently own a Capita DOA and I'm looking for a new board. I often ride in icy conditions (north scandinavia) and the DOA doesn't seem to like that that much. Also at speed the board starts to act nervous. I don't ride park so I'm starting to think that maybe the DOA is a bit overkill. I'm getting comfortable with the occasional side jump tho! Also would be nice to learn a few tricks off a small ramp, but I'm getting to 30 soon...

I'd like a board that carves better, still allows for fun riding, but maybe provides some more stability at speed 🤔 I'm going to Japan in a year for a year and would also like to ride powder, but I guess I could just rent a powder board for those days 😄

Do you guys have any recommendations?

I find the directional boards cool looking and I never ride switch, but will those limit the jumping etc.?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Looking for feedback on my riding posture

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for some constructive feedback on my riding form. I’ve attached a couple of short clips from last season. I know it’s not a ton of footage to analyze, but it’s the only media I currently have available.

I recently learned about the "stacked position" concept through Taevis's videos, and I'm planning to make that my main focus when I get back on the mountain this season.

Based on these files, what posture mistakes or bad habits stand out to you? Any specific feedback or drills on what I should correct to get a better riding position would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Research on Outwear Brands

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Hey all, I’m in a marketing research class and my group is doing a project on ski and snowboard jackets and gear.
We put together a short survey about how people pick what to buy and what they think of a few brands.
It takes about 5 to 10 minutes and it’s anonymous. You don’t need to be an expert or know any specific brand, we just want honest answers from people who ride.

Would really appreciate it if you have a few minutes. Thanks!

Goggles Question

A question from the east coast of Canada where the wind is crazy and the snow comes at you sideways.

My girlfriend loves to wear a set of goggles when shovelling snow. The set she had for a few years gave out last year.

Can any of the Reddit snowboarding noobs recommend me a good set to get her for Christmas? Something decently stylish, not too clunky and good anti fog.

What should I consider when buying my first board?

I am a beginner looking to buy my first snowboard. This will be my third season snowboarding. I can link turns but not not quite carve.

I ride groomed courses and is interested in learning ground tricks and some simple park stuff someday.

What else do you consider when buying gear? How do you choose board, bindings and boots? (I've only ever rented stuff I dont know the brand of; i tried a Burton step ons at Hakuba. I wasn't really impressed with bindings and boots but the board was fine)

I saw this on sale yesterday (around 120USD). What do you think of it? They also have other boards at around 29000~49000 JPY (185~250USD).

Edit: 154cm; 68kg (actively trying to lose weight; goal is 60~63); F

Will my size 15 boots fit on my 166w Burton custom? 🥲

I’ve never snowboarded and decided this was the year I’m gonna get into it, the dude at my local shop recommended the Burton custom because I am familiar with board sports (I skate and wakeboard) but he never really asked about my feet. I just ordered size 15s online and am now worried they will have too much drag. What should I do please help🙏

Edit: after reading some of the comments I think I’ll just give up snowboarding this year and focus on my weight thanks yall anyways :(

Bataleon Disaster or Disaster+?

Hey, I am about to purchase my second snowboard. I am an advanced rider who has been using a stiff carving board but I want something REALLY laid back and playful to have some fun in the park with. I want the jibbiest, most wet-noodle board I can find. With that said, should I get the Disaster or Disaster+? I know the disaster has slightly more flex, and Im not concerned about high speeds or carving at all since I want a board as specialized as possible for park. Nevertheless, is the disaster+ worth it for the higher air speeds and is the pop of the board any better? Thanks a lot in advance!
