Wild Snake Photos and Questions - Not for ID My Friend Came Back for a Visit!

Post image

About two months ago my neighbor called me in a panic asking if I could come get a snake out of her yard. Well I had the pleasure of picking up the biggest snake I have ever held and also saving him/her from being beheaded.

I released it into my backyard over near a large woodpile and a shed full of mice/rats and thought it was the last I’d see of my friend. But this morning when I went outside there they were chilling by my porch. The regal lord of my backyard come to pay me a visit and say thanks for being a friend!

Thank you for your time lovely snake people! And if you ever encounter a creepy critter please be kind or consult your local critter witch for help. 💜

Pet Snake Questions Cornsnake illness?

I’ve recently had an incident with my cornsnake and he hasn’t been behaving normally since. I think I disturbed him while he was going to the toilet by walking past and startling him, but I think he retracted and then went again later. Later on when I went to clean it there were small drops of blood next to the droppings.

He has since been acting far more erratically, very weary of me which might be because I have spent more time bothering him checking if he’s okay than I usually would - and he did not take the mouse that I offered which was a few days late (I tried to give him time to calm down, he normally eats very regularly with no issues).

No signs of damage or any more bleeding, blood was bright red and not on the actual droppings but nearby which suggests it is some type of cut rather than internal bleeding. He’s still very mobile and reactive and while he is a bit of a jumpy snake he is definitely more on edge than usual. Only other behavioural notices would be that I have seen him with an open mouth a few times in the last few days which is not a frequent thing for him usually (seen him readjust his jaw a few times but never frequently).

Please help and advise what to look out for or what to try him with, i’ll give him another week on the food but I am unsure on next steps. Thank you

Pet Snake Questions Is my roommate not taking the health of their snake seriously enough?

Hi all,

My roommate got a juvenile female gopher snake about a month or so ago. She’s currently about 7 months old, I believe. She gets offered one pinky per week. She has eaten two, but has not eaten in the past 3 weeks. My roommate says she is looking skinny, so I suggested taking her to the vet. They said no, “I’m not doing that for a snake” (which I think is an awful attitude, your pet is your responsibility!!!). I’ve found some local vets that could work, but I’m not sure how serious the situation is, and maybe I’m just overreacting. I have never cared for a juvenile snake before, so I’m not sure if my concern is overblown or not.

okey so i have currently 2 snakes (brazilian rainbowboa and ballpython) and im going to upgrade my bp to same size terrarium as what my boa currently has but im struggling to think what could be better for theyr terrarium placements. my boa is still young (about year and half) so he isnt really active and rarely climbs and stuff at least what i have seen but my bp is literally the most active snake ever and she is currently on the top terrarium from the pic and loooves trying to get as high as possible in the terrarium so should i when i get the upgrade, put my bp on the top so she can live her airboreal dreams or put the raimbow boa on top since they are actually airboreal lol im going to have the smaller terrarium on middle so options are either close to floor or close to ceiling lol

Pet Snake Questions Quick brumation question

Post image
9 Upvotes

My boy, year and a half old bullsnake just went into brumation. And I just made his next enclosure size up. I’m guessing I should wait until he comes out in march-april to replace the enclosure, right?

And, he hasn’t eaten in a while, been shedding since last Monday. Is it possible to offer food while he’s hibernating, or would that be ill advised due to digestion issues following brumation?

The picture is from Me checking on him after cleaning up some poop. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Pet Snake Questions Convincing the wife?

What have been some ways you have been able to convince your significant other to get a snake?

I keep tarantulas, and other inverts(she doesn't love but is ok with) And she even said she would be ok with any lizard. But snakes were a flat No.

Her reasons are they are more scary(than other reptiles), and potentially dangerous to our young kids.

I know they can be dangerous to kids. However, I'm experienced with keeping exotic animals, including species that require extra safety precautions. I'd obviously take every precaution necessary

I'm thinking about just accepting my fate, and looking into a lizard for the family ( Blue tongue skinks have caught my attention)

Any advice?

General Question / Discussion Looking for direction

We're working our way up to a fully bioactive ball python enclosure. Is there a list of plants that are safe for them? It seems like everything I look up is unsafe.

Thanks!

Pet Snake Questions "Winter-Proofing" Enclosure advice

I live in NorCal and winters can decently cold here, we don't get snow but it can drop into the 40s-30s at night. I have my snakes on timed plug-ins right now to regulate their heat lamps but I want to make sure they aren't getting too cold at night, what do y'all recommend? Just something to help keep them in the safer 70°+ area during the colder parts of winter and fall. Not really an issue in the spring and summer since our apartment can normally hold room temp pretty well, and the higher temp snakes have pretty good insulation (humidity lids and a foam background for one)

Is there a good timer for flipping lights off and heaters on at night?

I'm also looking into a proper thermostat system now that I have more than one enclosure, so if y'all have any specific recommendations for that I would very much appreciate it.

Pet Snake Pictures New bedding, shes adventurin

She was previously in sand because her previous owner didn't do any research and I didn't have the money to invest in getting her anything fancy and didn't want to disrupt her while she was having feeding issues. But now that she's eating, she's fresh out of sand and into an aspen coconut mix and thriving ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹

They were so stinky smelly, I walked them a good mile down the road. I could’ve spared some quail eggs but they had to go and kill three of my birds and not eat any of them instead 🙄

Pet Snake Questions Looking for general pet snake advice

Daughter wants a snake.... we know nothing about whats needed or general habits. Im looking for advice on a starting point for what we need. Things like how often to feed, when to change tank bedding, etc.

Really starting points for her (8) to do her own "research" on what she needs to do to take care of it.

We dont know what kind of snake yet, (cheap, easy, all that).

General Question / Discussion Looking for reputable False Water Cobra breeders in/around Michigan?

Hey everyone,

I’m currently planning to add a False Water Cobra to my collection and am looking for recommendations for reputable, ethical breeders located in Michigan or the surrounding Midwest/Great Lakes area.

Ideally, I’d love to do a local pickup or meet at one of the regional reptile expos (e.g., Taylor, Kalamazoo, or Tinley), but I'm also open to breeders who safely ship when the weather permits.

Health, good genetics, and well-started hatchlings taking frozen/thawed prey are my top priorities. If you’ve purchased a Falsie from someone you trust or know of breeders currently producing or planning clutches, I’d really appreciate your recommendations and experiences!

Thanks in advance!

General Question / Discussion Random snake question

Hi, I have never owned a snake (nor do I plan to) but watching some youtube videos about them I was wondering if the enclosures are too small? Callmethelamp has many species but their habitats seem so small and simple.

Just for my own learning/curiosity - are these bad examples of habitats for snakes? Don't they need enrichment like other animals?

Thanks for answering my probably dumb questions!

Pet Snake Questions Looking to surprise my husband with a snake. Any advice?

Hello snake enthusiasts! My husband adores snakes and it’s been his dream to have one as a pet. I however, admit that I know little about snakes aside from the fun facts he tells me. We recently got married and moved into a bigger place and there is now plenty of space for a snake. I would like to surprise him for his birthday with an enclosure/tank and the money for the equipment he’d need.

Would anyone be able to give any suggestions of how much money I should set aside? Any general suggestions or advice for a first time snake owner? Thank you!

General Question / Discussion Snake under my landscape fabric – how do I keep snakes out of my backyard?

Hi everyone, I just moved into a new house in the countryside. The backyard is bare dirt, and there’s a pond right behind the back wall.

I’m fixing up the yard, so I put down landscape fabric. I plan to cover it with gravel, but I haven’t finished yet. There are also some weeds and junk I haven’t cleared (I’m working on it). I have a compost bin back there too.

Tonight I went out to check the compost bin and saw a snake. I’m really, really scared of snakes, so I ran to the front yard. My boyfriend chased it off, and he said it went under the landscape fabric.

I don’t want to hurt it. I just want it to leave, and I’m worried more snakes will come because of the pond.

What can I do to make my yard less attractive to snakes? Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!
