In light of all the bot spam we're introducing a new posting rule

Hi everyone! I know most of you have probably noticed the absolutely unrelenting bot posts lately. Myself and the other mods have been trying our best to remove those posts and ban the bot users, thanks to all your reports we have been doing an okay job of it until recently. The last few months these types of posts have been absolutely obnoxious, not just in our community but in many others, and we are having a hard time keeping up because we aren't bots but just a bunch of Samoyed lovers with families and other commitments :)

After talking to some regulars here and the other active moderator we have decided to try out implementing a minimum karma to post certain types of posts. Text posts will not be affected as we certainly always welcome discussion and questions in this community! We welcome your feedback and please continue reporting any suspicious posts and comments you see.

Thank you,

r/samoyeds Mod team

My Blind and depressed Samoyed

Post image

My 5 year old Samoyed has recently gone fully blind due to basically what I can describe as PRA from a gastric illness. He seems to be almost depressed. Sleeps all day not really interested in anything. Just wants to sleep in the same corner of the house and barely wants to go on walks even though he is completely safe. The change is extremely jarring. He was on prednisone for 3 or so weeks to see if that may improve his sight which I am pretty sure it didn't but maybe acted as a bit of an upper and now that has ended he is so down in the dumps and disorientated. It's been about 6-7 weeks of blindness that we are aware of. I don't know what to do.

New Fear

All of the sudden, my 15 week old pup is scared of the school bus

So now, I take her outside as far as she will go (she knows where to bus stops so she refuses to go past a certain point), and I try to distract her and give her treats as she sits quietly when the bus starts rolling in.

Sometimes she says screw the treat, I'm out and tried to run away. To the point I'm afraid she will slip out her harness (which has happened once)

But there are moments she will sit and have the treat while the bus is there.

Any other tips?

I'm waiting for her to get the rest of her shots (this weekend )so I can socialize her more to the rest of the world, people, pets, etc

This is Dante (left, the lighter pumpkin) and Koda (right, the darker pumpkin with a hood). We decided to take a few pics in their old pumpkin costumes and are pleased with the results ☺️

Kai refuses to take the stairs.

Good evening folks! So Ka’iana here, won’t do the stairs and my partner won’t be able to carry him up soon due to her small stature and his big floof. However on the odd chance if we abandon him on the landing he’ll come up half but it’s literally once in a blue moon he’d to it. I need some advice and help to help him start doing stairs on his own and not being a prince and getting carried up and down. This is Ka’iana, he’s just over 4 months old and these are the stairs. Cheers!

Shippo and Liv's first time playing in full chaos mode

(Edit in case anyone catches it: Didn't realize it until after she was home.. yeap, white n' biscuit Samoyed)

Shippo has been my only dog for a bit over a year now, 18 months old now. Great behavior, REALLY close to me, but he was clearly lonely so I decided to get him some company.

First day was TOUGH, Shippo was JEALOUS and OFFENDED to say the least. They clicked when we picked her up but back home in HIS comfort zone was another story. She was even more depressed, coming from a pack of 8 (parents + litter mates) to a house where the only dog there rejected her.

Finally took them to the yard yesterday (day 2), gave Shippo the classic "Come on, let's patrol the perimeter" and started giving Liv "follow Shippo", "listen to Shippo", "do as Shippo says" (he usually hears that when told to go with my wife by me and vice versa).

Shippo immediately understood that I was giving him his place as my right hand and as her alpha and started showing her the ropes (she'd run back to me a lot at first all insecure). That did the trick. Only growling now is the classic boundary-setting between Arctic breeds that looks like deadly fights to those not in the know; she just smiles wagging her tail taking notes while he lectures her and cools down.

Two peas in a pod now, Shippo is no longer alone, and she finally feels at home with us. Too happy and proud of them to not share, pardon the wall of text ^_^

Regression

Hi all! Our sweet gal is 20 months old and struggling with some behavior regression. She's immensely increased her demand barking and it seems like no matter how much exercise she gets, she still has endless energy. She is still in tact, in case that's relevant.

For the first time ever, she is being destructive ( chewing floor boards). She has also regressed in some potty training by peeing inside when she knows to hold it.

First off, is this regression normal?

Second, open to any and all advice but particularly if anyone has mental games/puzzles that their Samoyed loves ( and that can handle the destruction strength of a Samoyed 😂). Photo in comments for tax.

How do I know if my baby is blind?

He was born on the 3rd of last month. I did some tests like: put objects in front of her and call, she bumps into her face and doesn't deviate. She never looks at me or follows me with her eyes. I've tried several things. If I let her loose, she stands still crying and doesn't see me 30cm from her. Is it normal?
