The Clothesline Pop-up Consignment
I don’t know why anyone buys stuff from this event. Do proceeds go to a charity or something? I went today hoping to find some good deals on christmas for my toddler and I was pretty shocked at their prices:
-a play kitchen for 155$ (people give these away for free in Buy Nothing Groups and you can find them in good condition very cheap from FB marketplace. The one priced at 155$ is 190$ not on sale at target right now.
-a used stuffed animal for 15$
-an 18 month used North Face coat for 50$
-board books for 3$ (get them brand new at TJ max for 5$)
-5 foam blocks (for climbing) for 75$ (brand new is 90$ at target)
Just putting this out there so maybe someone else can save some gas! I was pretty irritated that I added an hour commute to my trip home from work for that.

just brainstorming Mayo Bridge
My understanding from the various designs that balance cars/bikes/pedestrians in many of these situations, not just a major bridge reconstruction, is emergency vehicle transport systems of speed is a key factor/constraint in design. Am I wrong to assume that emergency vehicle transport systems of speed will be affected as the Mayo Bridge is reconstructed? I'm curious how these emergency transport systems function during long-term construction. Definitely not trying to reduce emergency response time, but genuinely concerned if long term master plans of emergency response is a variable in this decades-long project with regards to having a physical barrier between people and giant machines. Basically asking how often fire trucks and ambulances need to go around traffic across rivers in the age of 2030-2040 vs how often people might get hit by a machine while biking, skating or walking across the bridge. The advantage people in cars have is a built-in protection layer. I wish people not in cars had that layer. anD not trying to be a smartass but fire trucks and ambulances can be redesigned to suit the needs of the where people are. We are discussing a bridge for the 2030's.

🤳 Tourist Getting a fall/spooky season fix in the last week of October....what's recommended?
Howdy folks,
I just moved to Richmond (Westend/westhampton) in the last few months but grew up by Fredericksburg.
That having been said I've spent so much time rearranging my house and such and trying to get it valid for guests, I was walking downtown last night seeing the houses all decorated for Halloween and such that hit me really hard how much I had been missing the last few weeks.
I genuinely love spooky season and fall stuff and was actually supposed to get out to Asheville/Dollywood for my vacation last week but my car went wonky right outside of Charlottesville so I had to get it back a dealership near y. Been dealing with said dealership ever since which was a major PIA and the amount of follow up I've had to do to get any answers from them has been infuriating.
Regardless, I might try to get out to Dollywood or Western NC/VA this week for fall foliage....and I've already checked out the Byrd which I LOOOOVE their spooky season and everything about the place.
BUT....does anyone here have top recs on things to do or check out in the area for spooky season vibes or fall items or activities?
Tldr:
Just moved here and been dealing with getting my house settled. Was walking downtown last night seeing the houses decorated for spooky season and it hit me REALLY hit me how much I've missed in the last few weeks (as someone that LOVES fall and spooky season).
Can anyone recommend top sights or places to check out nearby for spooky season or adequate fall vibes?

Police activity around Carolina Ave?
Omw to work this morning (6am) there were at least 5-10 police cars by Carolina Ave and Young St; was curious if anyone knows what was up? The street wasn’t blocked but two police cars were haphazardly in the road making it a little difficult to get by.

💸 Jobs Can I negotiate starting salary at Dominion?
I was just offered a position at Dominion. Starting salary is slightly above mid band but lower than I would like. I have a competitive offer from another company as well. Can I request an additional 5% from Dominion if it is still within the pay band? Is this common, or are they likely to rescind the offer if I ask for more money?
Thank you, RVA!

Anyone want to create a band?
I just started learning left handed guitar this summer but had to stop lessons bc of the economy. I would love to meet like minded peeps and try and cover a song with a group of other beginner/nice-to-beginner musicians.
I’m into all types of music, probably start with a Tom Petty song bc they’re so good/simple. But also open to suggestions!
Heads up, we are gonna sound terrible for a little bit but it would be a fun adventure.
Feel free to comment or direct message if interested. Let me know what instrument you play and contact info. Thanks!! 🤘 🎸 🔄

🍺 Beer skip the small talk at triple crossing - fulton
Get cozy this fall with Skip the Small Talk - it’s a chill, sincere event focused on connection! We will be at Triple Crossing (Fulton).
It’s a guided conversation event—think speed-friending vibes, but calmer and more intentional.
You rotate through short conversations with prompts that skip past surface-level small talk. It’s structured enough to make it easy, but relaxed enough to feel natural.
Most people come alone. The crowd tends to be thoughtful, open, and just… normal humans who want more community.
Here’s the link if you’re curious:

Shout out to Trial and Error
With the popularity of cocktails like the Last Word and Verdant Lady and those freaks in Chicago that drink it straight Chartreuse has been nearly impossible to find consistently.
That's why I'm thankful for Trial and Error (Bombolini's distillery) for helping fill that void. Is it as good as the OG? No. Do you have to call and visit all the ABC stores in a 25-mile radius every day for a chance to get it? No.
How does it stack up? It's a little more alcohol forward, less sweet, and has a different herb/spice profile. I feel like they've tweaked the recipe since they started making it and it only gets closer to the original.
So, if you want to make a Last Word at home and need a substitute in a pinch this is my go-to. As long as its in a cocktail it's basically the same thing.

How best to help an elderly neighbor?
I have a neighbor (in Highland Springs) who is in her mid 60s. She is a smoker but she has COPD and is on oxygen. Are there any good local resources to help her stop smoking? It’s such an expensive habit and each cigarette she smokes is taking weeks off her life
Also she can’t find work. She has some dings in her past record that make employers reluctant to take a chance on her. And her health isn’t great so she can’t do anything strenuous.
She is living off a very small disability payment and has 3 other adult relatives living rent free in her house (which she owns but it isn’t paid off yet). She tries to sell stuff to make ends meet but what she really needs is a job. But nobody wants to hire a disabled 60+ year old with a criminal record.
I’m trying to help her as best I can but I have already sent her $70 and spent $50 on dog food for her just this past week and my husband is gonna be pissed if I send her any more. I’m sending her links to local organizations that may be able to help her but I’m not sure if she will actually reach out to them or if she does idk if they can actually help her. Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks!

Looking for an obgyn, without a long wait list, that takes their time
Hello all,
I am recovering from an ectopic pregnancy and I am just curious to see if any folks have any recommendations for obgyn's that have helped them through an ectopic pregnancy, took time to check in about symptoms and explained potential symptoms?
With my current obgyn, I feel so left in the dark about what is going on.
I would also love recommendations for fertility specialists. Im currently set up with shady grove, but the process to get set up has been kinda all over the place and ive been on hold for vcu fertility specialists for such a long time, neither option seems promising.
Edit: thanks for all the recommendations. It's tricky as calling vwc and vpfw there's a wait list for some of the doctors recommended. I might consider trying to meet schedule with one of the doctors recommended (earliest availability is Jan 2027). Maybe there is the option to call back to see if any openings have become available. Or I might schedule at vwc with a doctor and see if once im pregnant again 🤞🏿ill be able to switch over.
Idk! It's all just a lot.

After hesitation, Planning Commission green-lights redevelopment of apartments to townhomes at Libbie and Grove
The property in question, at 5706 York Rd. (Libbie and Gove) currently offers $950 for a two-bedroom apartment...
Center Creek Homes has sought to buy the property in order to build eight high-end townhouses that would be marketed for over $1 million each.
Any buyer would have the option to include a small accessory dwelling unit in the footprint.
Initially, the developer said including the ADUs could help incorporate some affordability into the plans, although CEO Dan Magder last week conceded “it may have been a little too cute” to characterize them that way.

Ruby Scoops Looking to Move on from Brookland Park Blvd Location

CCPS started charging a 4% (+ $0.25) fee to keep my kid's lunch account funded.
Apparently I missed the memo this was going into effect. There's no other option to add money to her account online, except with a card. So dumb.
"Parents can avoid fees by delivering a check or cash directly to the School District."
This is a combo post for me to complain, but also a heads up to any other parents who have their account on auto pay (which is how I found out about the fee) and want to avoid it.
I'm gonna find somewhere/someone to submit a request to at least have an ACH option online.

TIL About Cameras in Parking Garages
TIL that quite a few garages in Richmond do not have security cameras. This is phenomenal news for thieves and vandals. But this is also news that residents should be aware of. This particular one is on South Colonial Ave (behind the Byrd Theater). There are security cameras all over Carytown (ring cameras, businesses, etc.) but in the parking garages, most of them have none.
Curious Commonwealth asks: Is there a vampire in Church Hill?
Everybody loves a good vampire story in October.
But this particular tale doesn’t begin in Victorian London or New Orleans. It began in 1925, with the collapse of a train tunnel beneath Richmond’s historic Church Hill neighborhood.
Beth Houlihan, Haunts of Richmond president, shares the tale countless times with tours every Halloween season.
“The story basically goes, the collapse happens, a group of people hear the collapse happen because it would have rumbled through Shockoe Bottom,” Houlihan says.
The tunnel collapses on a work train and steam locomotive with people inside. Witnesses run toward the tunnel to lend aid, and they reportedly find two men outside.
“One is laying on the ground, absolutely filthy,” Houlihan says. “It looks like he’s just crawled out. Another gentleman is very impeccably dressed, he’s bending over the gentleman on the ground, it looks like he’s giving medical attention.”
According to the story, the man stands and turns to the group slowly, giving them a toothy smile.
“And they notice his teeth are a little pointy, and there’s some blood coming down the corner of his mouth,” Houlihan says.
They scream “vampire!” And the well-dressed man takes off, running across town to Hollywood Cemetery in Oregon Hill where they see him flit into a mausoleum.
As the story goes, the vampire enters the tomb of William Waltham Pool, a man who had already been dead for a decade. Pool had feared being buried alive.
“So when he had his tomb commissioned over at Hollywood Cemetery, he had a trick door put on it — so if he were to wake up in his tomb he could let himself out without a problem,” Houlihan explains.
