Rural planning is the process of designing, organizing and regulating the use of land, infrastructure and the environment in rural communities, towns and regions, with an eye to creating safe, healthy areas that residents enjoy, that contributes to their prosperity, & that encourages enough growth for economic prosperity, but often, not enough to transform a rural area into an urban area, as often, residents don't desire this.

I was recently appointed to our rural county's Planning Commission. Would love to hear what you'd like to see (and not see) in an eager-yet-amateur, newly-minted commissioner who wants to take the job seriously.

Small town business ideas

This business is in another town of over 2,000. They have a large building with a coffee shop, that in the evening turned into a bar. The coffee and breakfast is expensive but at least it’s another business. Looked very successful.

New to Rural Planning

I'm a city manager of a small town (<7000 pop) with dreams of walkability and revitalization. How applicable are the concepts being used in urban renewal to towns with a single, almost inactive, 65' wide main street? I find the concepts of walkability and strong sense of place to be completely foreign to most people here, including the mayor/council. Feels like a mammoth task to make positive change and convince everyone of what positive change even is.
