From what I hear (my sons diesel mechanic classes) most programs only skim the theory – “you’ll log a work order sometime.” Real‑world techs learn the workflow on the job. If you want students to actually *use* a CMMS, set up a sandbox or use a trial with a few mock assets (a truck, a generator, a lift) and run a “preventive maintenance week”:
Generate a schedule (oil change every 5 000 mi, battery check monthly).
Have each student pull the work order on a tablet, record labor time, snap a photo of the part, and close it out.
Review the audit trail together – who missed a step, what the “time‑to‑complete” metric looks like.
Free tools like **OpenMAINT** or KeplaClouds demo - https://cmms-demo.keplacloud.com/ work fine for a classroom. The key is making the software part of the hands‑on lab, not a separate lecture.
