I have been building up all my favourite albums on vinyl (starting with R.E.M. of course because what else?) and by coincidence Up has just arrived today on the anniversary of its original release.

I always thought of At My Most Beautiful as my favourite track but now it might be You're in the Air. It has such a shimmery haunting dreamlike quality.

I find this to be such a fascinating album. Perfect for this time of year. And also for when I'm going through a bit of an anxiety spiral which I happen to be at the moment. A great anxious-guilty-dissociation mood.

Tear it up or ignore and downvote. Have at it. I put some though into these. Will read any comments and defend choices...even the Outsiders pick and placement🙂.. 🍻🍻

Apparently I have too much time on my hands because I've decided to relisten to every official release, take notes, and then attempt to stack-rank their 200+ original songs.

For the record, I'm excluding covers, live tracks, demos, fan club singles and alternate versions but everything else is on the table. I have a strong idea what will be #1 but everything else is up for grabs.

Shiny Happy People Demo 2 from Out Of Time 25th Anniversary, Stipe sings Shiny Happy People then Mills tongue in cheek sings Chinese Happy People in reply. Stipe doesn't laugh but you can hear him smile as he sings his next line 🤭 around 1:15 into song

Just been listening to Saturn Return on 🎧 and on a loop and while I've absolutely adored it since the release of Reveal, I now feel that it deserves to be up there in the pantheon of Their Greatest Songs (I'm also aware that this sentence is far too long 😮‍💨😄)

My favorites in order. What's everyone else's?​

Idlewild's 2005 release Warnings/Promises, for me anyway, sounds so much like NAIHF era R.E.M.

It's also well documented that there's a lot of mutual love and respect across both bands so not a huge surprise.

It had a mixed reception from Idlewild fans at the time as it was the biggest departure from their early punk sound. The songwriting, melodies and lyrics are sublime though.

Worth a listen if you don't know the band or album. Would love to hear other folk's recommendations too.
