ਸਵਾਲ سوال [Question] Question about getting along with people from different races.

I'm autistic low support. In academia, in my master's cohort, it was white people, Asian people, a few black people, and one hindu guy. I wasn't able to get along with anyone. Some guys found common ground if they both spoke Spanish as a second language, or I guess because they're both European descent, and Asians and the black women worked together. The hindu guy was just making friends with everyone but I'm not as good as him.

I just want to ask how important identity is to not just yourself, but if you find identity is important to people from other ethnic groups? A Spanish ethnic guy speaks spanish, an italian speaks italian, so on so forth. But I don't know if they have as strong as a cultural connection as we do. Second to that, I wanted to ask if you find that other punjabis are nicer to you and more willing with make friends with you and work with you then people of other ethnic groups? In today's age, it seems people just want to flex and be their own person. I question the importance of cultural ties. I grew up with guyanese people and they were Guyanese through and throughout, they didn't like me much. The punjabis in highschool sort of took me in. I just wonder, though, if identity remains important, and things like that. Please leave an answer for me!! I hope what I said makes sense.

Edit: I just don't get why I can't get along with anyone. It seems like noone likes me. I flunked out of my master's and I hard time making friends, my classmates didn't like me and neither did my housemates.

apparently I can’t post in r/punjab

I am talking about one’s running khalistani referendum.
one’s went to Diljit’s stage with those posters
one’s went to Gurdas Mann’s show and were told to shove it.

they keep bringing separatism issue, criticizing India, living under some false sense of superiority while their own kids don’t give a f about religion or language, but they sure do want to moral police the mainlanders.

I am talking about same ones “jinna de jvake de name john te steve”
same ones who think recent students ruined their good image.

ਸਵਾਲ سوال [Question] Standing and sitting in Punjabi - state (adjective) vs. action (verb)

Just to clarify something that I have assumed for a while - the state of being stood up or sat down in Punjabi is expressed as an adjective, not as verb.

  • ਬੈਠਾ / ਬੈਠੇ / ਬੈਠੀ / ਬੈਠੀਆਂ (adjective) ~ being sat down
  • ਬੈਠਦਾ / ਬੈਠਦੇ / ਬੈਠਦੀ / ਬੈਠਦੀਆਂ (verb) ~ sitting down (for example, habitually or repetitively)
  • ਬਹਿੰਦਾ / ਬਹਿੰਦੇ / ਬਹਿੰਦੀ / ਬਹਿੰਦੀਆਂ (verb) ~ sitting down (for example, habitually or repetitively)
  • ਖੜਾ / ਖੜੇ / ਖੜੀ / ਖੜੀਆਂ (adjective) ~ being stood up
  • ਖੜਦਾ / ਖੜਦੇ / ਖੜਦੀ / ਖੜਦੀਆਂ (verb) ~ standing up (for example, habitually or repetitively)

So to use the verb form to talk about somebody sat down / stood up would not be correct, as that would imply that the action of standing up / sitting down is being performed / under progress, as opposed to simply being in that position.

Is this correct? Might be obvious, just wanted to double-check.

Hi. Hope you all are doing great. So there is this one song in Saraiki language I heard a long time ago. It was about 5-6 years now. I only remember one line of the song. But I couldn’t find the song nor I remember much. Please anyone help me find that song. Thanks. It was by a male singer.

The line I remember:

Chittay hatthan te mehndiyaan nee. Hayeeeee.

Thank you in advance.

ਸਹਾਇਤਾ مدد [Help] Taksali register is ruining Punjabi and we should be aware! Spoiler

Taksali register is textbook form of Punjabi used in textbooks and education. Newer generations are mixing in colloquial Punjabi and Taksali is already fake punjabi containing deliberate hindi, persian and arabic words which aren't being used in colloquial Punjabi eg. ਨਮਕ, ਰੋਜ਼ਾਨਾ, which we never used in authentic Punjabi and people scrutinize when we speak it at home which is good. And it uses 'ਹੈ' copula for 'is' which is never used in daily Punjabi, we usually use va, aa, ae. Punjabi learners learn Punjabi mostly online and only Taksali is available there and they are using it in daily speech which is robotic. Many speakers say ਔਖਾ instead of ਆਉੱਖਾ, ਕੌਲਾ instead of ਕਉੱਲਾ and there are many examples.

They don't know we use near open central vowel in ਕਰ, ਘਰ, ਚੰਨ etc... instead of schwa after first consonant there.

They don't know we say short or clipped ੇ i.e. [e] sound in ਫਿਰ, ਚਿਰ, ਡਿੱਗ, ਦਿੱਲ etc... instead of ਿ literally, like that they also say ੁ literally in ਤੁਰ, ਗੁੜ, ਘੁਣ instead of short or clipped ੋ i.e. [o] vowel sound.

Many native urbanite speaker are using that including ਨ instead of ਣ in ਪਾਣੀ, ਭੈਣ.

Almost all urbanite speakers don't say ਲ਼ like in ਕਾਲ਼ਾ, ਸਾਲ਼ਾ etc...

I don't know why we write ਪਿਆਰ but we pronounce ਪ੍ਯਾਰ, like that we write ਮਹਿਲ and pronounce it ਮਹੈਲ and new Punjabi learners don't know these things and learns it incorrectly.

Why we use words like ਜ਼ਰੂਰਤ word instead of ਲੋੜ.

I think I am unique that only I am aware about this.

And all studies and articles says there are only 3 short vowels in Punjabi but they don't include [ɐ], [o], [e] like in ਕਰ, ਘਰ, ਚਿਰ, ਫਿਰ, ਤੁਰ, ਗੁੜ etc...

I hate these things and I wish I could have justice.

People should be aware about it but no one is caring.

Family moved to India post partition and no one in my generation speaks the maternal dialect. For someone who feels a loss of native cultural identity, what do you do to keep your grandparents' culture alive?

Near low central vowel, short o, short e [eg. Near low central vowel (Short ਾ) in ਘਰ, ਚੰਨ; Short O (Short ੋ) in ਤੁਰ, ਗੁੜ; Short E (Short ੇ) in ਡਿੱਗ, ਨਿੱਤ], gemination, tones, short last schwa, voice habits, heavy use of retroflexes are the phonetic features of Punjabi which makes stoccato.

ਸਵਾਲ سوال [Question] Bhangra as a white woman

Hi, I’m a 21 white woman and have recently become obsessed with watching bhangra videos. I think that the energy, style, rhythm, and collaboration in the dances is SO amazing and it looks like so much fun and such an athletic style of dance. Specifically I am in awe of the involvement of the whole body, it looks so freeing to move with your whole body in that way. The music is beautiful and fun, although I don’t understand the words. I find the history of bhangra to be so interesting and I love that it continues to be a way to celebrate culture.
Long story short, I want to take a Bhangra dance class but I’m not sure if as a white person that is crossing the line into appropriation. I am not Punjabi, and have no cultural or ethnic ties to India or Pakistan. I don’t want to overstep into a space that isn’t mine, and most certainly don’t want to make anybody uncomfortable, so I figured I would ask on here. What do you think? Can I, a white woman, learn bhangra?
