One interesting point is that genetics may be linked to how the brain functions in people with ADHD. Hopefully, studies like this will help explain why the disorder can affect people in different ways.

Because it’s probably leftover hunter gatherer genes, and people live in different environments Argo, different genes expressed in said environments.

You probably have a point there, as the environment can affect how genes are expressed. There’s already quite a bit of research into the links between genetics and the environment, but we still have a lot to understand about how they interact in ADHD.

Especially with ADHD and the rise of screen time.. The constant flow of information it's like the hunter-gatherer mind isn't built for it.. It's like the ADHD were the first infected its contagious and spreading.. . Don't catch it.. As you doom scroll past this comment.

I would argue that hunter gatherers ARE built for it, or should I say the systems are designed and built to target people with easily highjacked dopamine systems.

What? According to googles AI, The relationship between dopamine sensitivity and hunter-gatherer societies is a core focus of evolutionary psychiatry and genetics. In evolutionary biology, specific genetic variations that reduce baseline dopamine sensitivity are viewed not as modern defects, but as highly advantageous survival mechanisms tailored for an ancestral, nomadic way of life.

1. The "Wanderlust Gene" (DRD4 7R Allele)
The most direct genetic link between dopamine sensitivity and hunter-gatherers involves the DRD4 7R allele, a variant of the dopamine receptor D4 gene. [1]
Blunted Sensitivity: The 7R variant creates dopamine receptors with a lower affinity for dopamine. This means carriers have a lower baseline sensitivity to the chemical and require a higher stimulus threshold to feel a sense of motivation or reward. [1, 2, 3, 4]

The Explorer Advantage: To compensate for lower dopamine signaling, individuals naturally exhibit traits of novelty-seeking, risk tolerance, and hyper-awareness. [1, 2]

Migration Patterns: Evolutionary geneticists have found that the prevalence of the DRD4 7R allele correlates strongly with the migratory distance of ancestral human populations. The individuals who left Africa and pioneered global colonization 40,000 to 50,000 years ago were significantly more likely to carry this "low sensitivity" dopamine gene.

2. The Hunter vs. Farmer Hypothesis (ADHD)
First proposed by radio host and author Thom Hartmann, and widely studied by neuroscientists, the Hunter vs. Farmer hypothesis frames Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) as an evolutionary artifact. [1, 2]
Dopamine-Seeking Subtype: Modern ADHD is biochemically tied to altered dopamine clearance and sensitivity, leaving the brain constantly "seeking" dopamine. [1]

Survival Traits in the Wild: In a hostile, unpredictable prehistoric environment, traits that are penalized today were life-saving assets:
Inattention was actually hyper-vigilance—rapidly scanning the environment to spot a camouflaged predator or moving prey before anyone else.
Impulsivity meant the ability to make split-second, life-or-death decisions without overthinking.
Hyperactivity provided the tireless physical endurance needed for persistence hunting and long-distance foraging

3. Concrete Evidence: The Ariaal Tribe Study
A famous real-world validation of this theory looked at the Ariaal people of Kenya, a population transitioning from a nomadic lifestyle to sedentary farming. [1, 2]
Nomadic Hunters: Among those who still lived a traditional nomadic, pastoral life, carriers of the dopamine-blunted DRD4 7R variant were better nourished and physically healthier than non-carriers. Their restlessness and aggression made them superior defenders and resource gatherers. [1, 2]

Sedentary Farmers: Conversely, among the Ariaal who settled into agricultural communities, carriers of the 7R gene were significantly more malnourished. The traits that kept them well-fed in the wild became a liability in a structured, repetitive environment.

4. Modern Foraging Adaptations
A 2024 behavioral study utilizing an online "berry-picking" foraging game found that participants with self-reported ADHD traits gathered significantly more food than neurotypical participants. Because of their unique dopamine pacing, the "hunter-gatherer brains" knew exactly when a resource patch was experiencing diminishing returns, prompting them to abandon it early and discover richer, unexploited resource patches.

For 99% of human history, our dopamine systems evolved to reward high-effort behaviors—tracking an animal for miles or climbing a tree for fruit. The evolutionary mismatch occurs because our modern, sedentary society has separated dopamine from physical effort. For individuals carrying ancestral hunter-gatherer genetic profiles, navigating a world built for predictable, long-term "farming" schedules creates a perpetual deficit in dopamine stimulation.

In conclusion, I don’t think you know what you’re talking about, or you aren’t neurodivergent . Because if you were, you would know more about it in order to have a desire to understand yourself and your place in the world.

I mean... genes encode things like receptor makeup and structural features of the brain, so of course they're linked to how the brain functions. That's why certain gene variants are associated with elevated chances of a certain personality/temperament presentation

I’m guessing that genes express more as chemical and environmental things change the way my tomatoes change every year changing color from yellow to red

That is a good analogy. I noticed that when I planted a red tomato, it produced black fruits, and I believe this was due to the cold weather and environmental conditions.

I have a question. Are there also ADHD people who are non-visual thinkers? When I am thinking, I often feel like drawing out a mind map visually and can't understand how other people could think differently in that aspect.

Mind mapping must give you clarity, which is why you often like doing it. Others, however, can organise information entirely in their heads. Both ways of thinking are very interesting and possible.

Correlation not causation.

This is a study that uses genetic risk to predict neuroimaging signatures and behavioral phenotypes, these are only probabilistic risk pathways - it’s just a theory.
