Technical Questions Need help drilling through a glacier?

I’m a PhD student, whose field is glaciology, and I’m in need of a steam drill to make some holes in Himalayan glaciers.

Ideally, I’d use a Karcher hot water unit, however this is very much out of my price range. Instead, I’m looking to build my own steam drill, from a diesel powered cold water unit.

How can I heat water leaving the pump on a budget?

Practical suggestions welcome! A am

I appreciate this may be a peculiar post but pressure washers are a choice too for glaciologists!!!

Equipment Easy-Kleen vs BOSS?

I had an Easy-Kleen 4000psi 4gpm and I’m wondering for my next one I should consider the BOSS? Just wondering because there is a reseller next to me but I don’t know much about it and if the quality is good in comparison to EK.

I have a home jobbie pressure washer 2700 psi I think with that turbo tip. What will get this out. I dropped acetone on it and forgot about it. Cold water and caustic soda?

Technical Questions How many washes does DI resin last? It mostly comes down to your tap water TDS I'm noticing.

Customers always ask how many washes a tank of resin is good for, and there's no single answer. For a fixed amount of resin, the total it can remove is roughly fixed: inlet TDS × gallons of DI water produced = a constant. So the higher your TDS, the less DI water you get, roughly in inverse proportion.

With the same resin, 100 ppm tap water should give you about twice as much DI water as 200 ppm. A larger unit like AKM's 15L makes sense if your TDS is on the high side or you wash a lot, since you refill less often.

What's your local TDS, and how long does a tank last you?
