Could storing Prep in too cold a temperature damage it?

Hi all,

The weather has been quite cold over the past few days here and I haven’t turned on my heating yet. As a result, my bedroom where I store my prep has been quite cold.

Could this have damaged my tablets and made them less effective? They are in a blister pack. The booklet inside the box just says to store below 30 degrees. It doesn’t give a minimum temperature but I see some sites online say it should be stored at at least 15 degrees. I think my room temperature was below that.

How cold has it been?

You should never refrigerate PrEP since doing so may cause condensation, which certainly can damage the medication.

Here’s Gilead’s detailed storage information: https://www.askgileadmedical.com/docs/truvada-prep/truvada-storage-and-stability

As you can see, it’s unlikely you have a problem.

I doubt the room would’ve ever gotten lower than maybe 8 degrees. There was certainly no moisture or condensation on it.

I might have left my pack on a shelf with contacts with sunlight, now I am scared the prep I used was damaged by an increase of temperature :(

As the document I posted above says, brief temperature excursions are not a concern.
