Smelling salts
What are some of the craziest, most effective smelling salts you use?
r/powerlifting • u/BenchPolkov • Jun 26 '26
Reddit has just forced through some stupid automations on the sub without giving us any prior warning and that appears to be fucking up people's custom flairs.
If anyone is having an issue posting because their competitor flair has disappeared, could you please submit a new flair request and we will get that fixed.
In the meantime you can just give yourself a generic flair so you can post.

A couple of years ago when the event was held in South Africa, the national antidoping agency did not show up.
Was any testing conducted at IPF masters world championships this year?

Do you like having 2-3 sweaty men shoe-horn you into polyester, canvas or denim bondage gear.
Do you like having your joints wrapped so tightly they bruise and bleed?
Do you like having your blood pressure turned up to 11 and being compressed so much that you think your head might explode?
Do you get off on enduring pain and suffering, and watching others endure it too?
Do you have a deathwish every time you get under the bar?
Yes?

Do you have a question and are:
Then this is the thread FOR YOU! Don't take up valuable space on the front page and annoy the mods, ASK IT HERE and one of our resident "experts" will try and answer it. As long as it's somehow related to powerlifting then nothing is too generic, too stupid, too awful, too obvious or too repetitive. And don't be shy, we don't bite (unless we're hungry), and no one will judge you because everyone had to start somewhere and we're more than happy to help newbie lifters out.

I know multi-ply isn’t very popular in this sub but does anyone else who follows the scene know why Dave Hoff has missed the last two WPO super finals?

Hi powerlifters,
Wanted to make a post directed towards mentality towards training with injury. I’ve herniated my L4-L5 disc, came back and competed at CNATS at the strongest I’ve been, and fell back into a cycle of injury for the past 1.5 years. It’s been very discouraging recently and I love the sport but can’t shake the feeling of thinking my body isn’t up to it. I’ve been training for longer than most of the average powerlifters (ab 4 years now) and I have a great DPT coach (of 3 years) who’s trying to work it through with me.
To my seasoned powerlifters out there, did you ever have a similar situation and how did you deal with it? Did you have similar doubts and was it worth sticking through even if it was an extended period of time?

My lower back has been sore for around 2 weeks.
I'm on my second cycle of Candito's 6wk. I also have longer femurs so my back gets used a lot in the squat.
I'm 2 weeks out from my first comp and my lower back has been sore for around 2 weeks now. Bending over, sitting down, my day to day life is a lot less comfortable because I cannot fucking recover from this program. On week 3 I had 7 sets of squats and then 9 sets of squats within the same week, and since then, still squatting regularly (I have already cut out almost all deadlifts), my lower back cannot recover.
I am sleeping 8-9 hours a night. I am eating 2500+ calories a day, 160g+ of protein. I'm only gonna have ~3 days of rest before my meet, so I'm scared my lower back won't be fully recovered in time for the meet. At this point, what can I even do?

I currently wear these Onitsuka Tiger Tai Chi shoes. No cushion/midsole. But I only realized lately that the soles don't cover the entirety of my feet so the sides of my feet are just hanging/floating.
Despite being flat, because of how narrow the soles are, my feet roll. I was wondering if deadlift shoes would help me or if I should just get strong lol
I'm also considering wrestling shoes because I find existing deadlift shoes unappealing - like, can't I just wear cheap aqua shoes?
But wrestling shoes seem to suffer from the same issue I currently face, narrow soles

Hey everyone, as it says in the title, I've been going through a bit of a rough patch. My dad passed away coming up on two months ago and it's been really challenging. The day he left I went to the gym and did my heaviest pre-planned sets of that program. It was incredibly challenging to get through but I thought about him during the workout. He was a legendary athlete back in the day and my getting back into athletics as an adult was a big part of our bond. So being inspired by the person he was, that has been my approach to grief... I go to the gym, I work out, get some endorphins, sometimes I go home and cry later. It feels healthy all things considered.
Anyway, I'd made some pretty substantial gains this summer and I signed up for a state competition. I'm still going to go but fuckin hell, sometimes I don't want to. I'm bummed, my appetite has plummeted, less food = less energy, y'all know the drill. I have been trying to hit my macros but it's so hard to eat this much food. Eating is always hard when I'm sad, never mind when I'm trying to bulk. My CNS has also clearly been greatly affected by the whole thing... I mean, I lost a parent who I was close with so it makes sense. I tried to not push myself too much but I'm watching the numbers I gained slowly decline and it's making it pretty hard to plan for this comp. I planned my peak and taper block based on the advice of our pal CWS over at Juggernaut Training and let me tell you... Monday fucking sucked. I hit all my macros on Sunday and hit most of my training day carbs before going in and I was supposed to hit triples on all my sets and could only swing doubles. Was a bit defeating.
Anyway. I'm going to do this competition. Hell, it's the day before what would've been my dad's birthday. And the man taught me a lot of things and one of those things was that you should always finish what you set out to do. I committed to this so I'm gonna do it, regardless of how well I do or don't do.
All this is mostly to ask if anyone has advice. Is there something that might help me get more of an appetite? Is it reasonable to supplement carbs with pedialyte instead of eating potatoes and rice? Is there some secret solution to getting my CNS to cooperate a little more? I'm afraid if I back off any more than I have I'm going to lose everything I've worked so hard to get the last six months. Or do I just accept that that's the way it is?
I always feel the need to say this but, please be nice to me. I'm really struggling and I just want to do as best I can with a little help from my more experienced powerlifting peers. Thanks for reading this far.

https://usapl.liftingdatabase.com/lifters-view?id=55690 is my lifters database, as always.
Honestly? I don't even know where to begin with this. The tl;dr version is that the meet went bad, in pretty much any way one can imagine it going bad. I got violently ill, for a good ten days straight, about 6 weeks out from the meet, lost another three weeks recovering, and spent two weeks trying to salvage anything I could before the meet only to break myself in the process.
The lifts. Mind you, the 195kg deadlift may be nsfl, and is definitely nsfw. Unless your co workers are crazy like me.
I chunked the videos in a playlist, here.
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLB7n-Xr0Uar4
Squats: i skipped these because even something as light as 300lbs in training felt like a house, so i figured i would save the energy for a push/pull.
Bench: 92.5 (good), 105 (miss), 105 (miss)
Bench press started at 92.5kg to get points on the board, and then it just derailed from there. The first miss my ass came up off the bench, so, definitely valid that it was a no go there. The second miss i honestly think was due to bad judging. There were a lot of lifts throughout where the judges were being a lot harsher than i think they needed to be, and not just with me, but in general, it was a very strict meet.
Deadlift: 160kg good, 195kg injury and no lift.
I had already thrown out squats completely, and bench press was a complete mess. My deadlift at 160 felt extremely taxing and heavy, and i figured i had enough energy left for maybe one more attempt. I really wanted to PR this meet so that left me with only one option, to deadlift 195kg, and failed.
The injury
The weight went up easily enough until my bicep tendon snapped completely and i dropped the weight.
Honestly im still rather mad and frustrated with not getting this lift. I think the tear distracted me, and had i been able to mentally push through the idea that the damage was already done, i think i could have gotten the lift.
On the other hand, i also felt the bar slipping well before this happened and probably should have shut it down before tearing anything, but i was pretty much in full competition mode and desperately needing a PR, so digging deep and sending it was the only option.
Training
I have been doing Dan John's easy strength for awhile now. I still think this methodology works pretty well, at least for me. And breaking myself aside, the 195kg attempt was going up smoothly enough that i honestly believe that I have another 15kg in the tank, just waiting to be released.
Essentially, the training is solid, overall. Getting sick set me back quite a bit and i should have throttled back as a result, not forward.
Anyway, Dan John's easy strength is more or less, 3-5 exercises, 3-5 days a week, and no more than ten reps on each exercise each session. The magic is that its the same workout, 3x a week, and the sets can be manipulated to have an easy day (1 set of 10), a medium day, (2 sets of 5), and a hard day (3 sets of 3, with maybe an extra rep in the last set). Very adaptable, and highly mallable to any sport someone might wish tocplay.
Key takeaways
Mixed grip is bad. Or, well, in my case, i used it as a crutch for poor grip strength and paid a hefty price for it. I also check my bicep like 20 times a day to make sure its still intact. That sounds utterly ridiculous but consider that there was remarkably little pain after it happened, even after the shocknand adrenaline wore off. Also make sure you find a competent surgeon and not someone who is just looking to make as much cash as possible.
Time to recover and rebuild and come back stronger than ever in 2028.
