Waterproof, easy pick up cards for a pub table

• Upvotes

I'm looking for advice on a pack of playing cards that is waterproof (beerproof really) and has a simple pickup off a traditional British pub table. A pub isn't always the place where you want to slide a card off the edge to pick it up and even more so when playing games with 8 or so semi-drunk people. I

I picked up a pack of Copag Elites, they seem good but i still find the pick up to be no better than my cheap JSC packs and my plastic ACELION cards. I also play a few games with my kids and solitare games by myself on a slick desk at home, where sliding off is the only way to pick up. Is there anything that fits the bill here?

Bonus if the cards have a clear red and black suit distinction. Some of the simple pub games I play, this is quite important. My plastic ACELION set is black with gold and silver and the suit colours clash, making them a poor set for me to use for these games.

Discussion What PCC do you think have the best Holographic/Gilding/Embossing/etc ?

• Upvotes

Of course excluding companies with non 'playing cards', which means their cards must working enough as playing cards, like fanned, spreaded, flicked.

So it's basically selecting the best of PCCs about the quality of additional effects on playing cards.

I think Oath PCC's works are incredible on Instagram but almost all of their decks are only gold holo&gilded, so I can't expect them to be great at other colors or patterns... But I'm sure that their embossing quality is really good.

Kingstar PCC is also quite good. There gilding quality is very nice, but the shining of 'foils on image' is very weak (I have Holo Moon playing cards and it was a little disappointing). Maybe their pure holographic is better? I don't know if they provide embossing.

USPCC's Holographic quality was ok (I have Holo Fontaines), but I heard they have some printing issues when applying holographic to cards. Holo Fontaine's embossing was so deep that it made mark on the other side.. I haven't seen there gilding.

What do you think?

Was at a local gift shop and I bought a gag deck, but then I started talking with the owner about why I collect playing cards. I had the Chess deck with me so I showed it to him, and in response he showed me a few old decks he had lying around that weren't for sale, and he gave me this one for free. "It's going to a good home," as he said.

Took these pics while I was getting lunch, and the last one just had a more standard size playing card for scale.

I just have a quick question: why are bicycle cards the de facto standard? Is it just because they are the oldest?

Question What are the biggest playing card design mistakes you’ve seen?

In the latest 52+J Club deck, there was an index error on the Three of Clubs—it actually has a small Spades symbol instead of a Club.

It reminded me of a Bicycle owl-themed deck I received (I forget the exact name, but it was definitely about owls) that came with two Queens of Hearts and no Queen of Diamonds.

Like the title says, what’s the biggest design mistake you’ve seen on a deck of playing cards? (Excluding physical cutting or printing misprints).

Dyenamik Playing Cards has been producing some of the best video games based card decks out there, and these are another hit for me for the game of the year winner. Slightly thicker card stock, great for packets, and won't wear down fast, great feeling finish, and amazing details.

Kickstarter Sangrya Prototype #2 & Process Work

Sharing our 2nd sangrya prototypes that just came in! New features include:

  • a light grey background to give it an ominous feeling
  • Aces with arrows for a fun card spinning target game mechanic
  • Moon icons for transformation events
  • red gilded edges
  • court cards with a partial inner frame
  • new card back design that is now outdated, need to replace it with the new design I'm currently working on
  • new font for the numbers & Letters (see vampire suit)

Need to clean up some sangrya petal icons, work on the sangrya plant court cards, finalize the back design maybe on autocad or illustrator. Zi is working on the gorgon artwork. Then start working on the tuck box design. If you are interested in grabbing this deck (that comes with light roleplaying card games) or even seeing the entire process of this project from the very beginning (discord reward tier) you can back it here on kickstarter!

The King’s English…

A bit random. I was recently gifted a bookcase in a house move and thought I’d better put something on its shelves instead of playing cards. So this and a few more reference books were brought down from the loft for a dusting. Off the top of my head I can’t think of any non-specialist books with a playing card design cover. Just thought I’d share. I shall be having a read later…

Hey guys!
How many watch-themed decks you have/know? I have two, and both are from Editions de la Tour.
This is their latest. A stunning deck.
I wrote a blog post as well: https://olaaf.eu/second-hand-a-second-watch-themed-deck/

Vintage Antiques A friend gave us some things to look through before donating them. Feels weird to open it

I know this set probably isn't rare or anything, but I've loved cards since I was a kid and I like collecting them and playing with them. So naturally, I saw a pack of cards in the "to be donated" bags and decided to grab them.

But they're still plastic wrapped and everything. Research says these might be from the 70s, which is really cool.

I'm a bit mixed on whether or not I should open them up, yk? Is that weird?

Either way, I like these and I'm excited to share them, so there's that

Buy bulk decks of cards

Hello, I dunno if this is the right place to ask but I wanna find cards. I wanna find normal plastic and paper cards that don't have to be unique in any way. All they have to be is high enough quality and maybe in bulk, idk. I dunno what price to expect but all the cards are going to be used for is more cardistry than cars tricks. Thanks for helping a unintelligent person who likes cards.

Photoshoot Astra Playing Cards Rite Aid

These playing cards were made for Rite Aid by USPCC, but outsourced to their Chinese affiliated factories. As such, they don't particularly have a good feel or shuffle very well. I'd liken them to the cheap Maverick cards currently produced in China, but these are actually a bit better than those in my opinion as the card stock doesn't peel from over shuffling and is thinner. These use the same suits as Stud with the exception of the Ace of Spades which uses the Logo in the box. The back and box design had this really interesting blank globe design that I like a lot. The jokers are unfortunately just a card that says "Wild Card" in inverted colours. I wish they had used a generic joker design or just used the Globe Logo again, but smaller like Aviator does. These also come with an advertising card for Rite Aid and one for Bicycle's website. The blue version of these cards are large index.

I really like the design of these cards and wish they would be reproduced in the Kentucky factory with a better finish, but I doubt that is gonna happen ever since it seems USPCC has thinned out their brands a little since they don't make Stud for Walgreens anymore and also stopped producing Hoyle Shellbacks a few years ago.

I’m horrified

I’m not a huge collector or anything, but I was playing with my blue Bicycle standard deck at work when the security guard asked to play a card game. He asked, “May I?” and I handed him the deck. I was bewildered when he licked his thumb before riffling through the cards.

I'm hurt and shocked. This deck is now dead to me.

Photoshoot My Playing Cards: Level 43 (Bicycle Vintage Design Playing Cards)

(October 26, 2026) This is Week 43 of My Playing Cards Series! Every Monday, I share 12 decks of playing cards in six photos. One for each side. Please stay tuned for more decks for showcase in the coming weeks!

NOTE: These posts are meant to showcase playing cards for education purposes and NOT for selling or trading!

This week, I’m sharing a 12 deck set called Bicycle Vintage Design Series playing cards.

Decks in the photo from left to right, top to bottom:
Bicycle Vintage Design #1 (Red Racer Back)
Bicycle Vintage Design #1 (Blue Racer Back)
Bicycle Vintage Design #2 (Red New Fan Back)
Bicycle Vintage Design #2 (Blue New Fan Back)
Bicycle Vintage Design #3 (Blue Safety Back)
Bicycle Vintage Design #3 (Red Safety Back)
Bicycle Vintage Design #5 (Blue Cupid Back)
Bicycle Vintage Design #5 (Red Cupid Back)
Bicycle Vintage Design #6 (Red Thistle Back)
Bicycle Vintage Design #6 (Blue Thistle Back)
Bicycle Vintage Design #7 (Red Tangent Back)
Bicycle Vintage Design #7 (Blue Tangent Back)

These Bicycle playing cards were reproduction of some antique Bicycle backs. These Vintage Design Limited Edition playing cards came out in 2006 and come in six different vintage Bicycle backs each with two colors.

The odd thing about this series is that it’s missing #4. There’s no such deck in existence of #4. Originally, this Vintage Design series was going to have nine different Vintage Design backs instead of six. There were planning reports of Hi Wheel Back, Old Fan Back and Emblem Back in the works, but those reproduction decks of those backs did not make it into the final release. So supposedly, there was no #4, #8 and #9.

Even though these decks have nothing to do with Halloween, I’ve already shared enough Halloween decks for this year. More Halloween decks will show up next year.

Level 44 preview: These Bicycle playing cards are very Collectable playing cards!
