Question I've never seen this in other serve/rally sports: some people just don't call score, ever.

• Upvotes

Is it a pickleball thing, or just my own experience? Calling the score is part of the serve. It's in the rules. It's not unclear. But so many people just...don't.

I'm the new guy at my main open group and I don't feel like I can be telling people what to do just yet. If they're my partner, I just start calling it for them, hoping they'll take the hint (so far, no). If they're on the other side, I just call it to myself, so I don't lose track.

I just don't get it, though. Do they think everyone knows it so they don't have to call? Or they don't want to admit they already forgot? Why??

Question Do you have good 4.0+ open play sessions in your area?

With so many pickleball facilities having opened in the last few years, it seems the legit 4.0+ players in my area are scattered all over now. Some clubs have ceased offering advanced sessions because of lack of signups, the advanced sessions that still exist are watered down by sub 4.0 players. One club I know has set a DUPR threshold of 3.6 for what they call advanced play. 🤦🏻. Are you 4.0+ players renting private courts or are there still legitimate advanced open play sessions where you live. I enjoy the variety of playing different players. Let me know where you’re from

Discussion 3 things that clicked after testing the Ben & Colin Johns warm-up routine

Ran through the Johns Brothers drill/warm-up progression recently and had a few big "aha" moments:

  • Less body movement = better dink control: When dinking straight-up and moving each other around, trying to muscle the ball fails immediately. The real key is keeping body movement minimal and letting the paddle face do the work.
  • Don't skip the transition zone: Most rec players warm up at the kitchen, step back to the baseline, and call score. Spending just 2–3 minutes intentionally defending from mid-court made resets during actual play feel way less rushed.
  • Warm up both wings equally: Doing drops and drives across all four court quadrants forces you to address your weaker wing before stepping into competition.

If your warm-up has gotten stale or passive, running through these zones with live attack triggers makes a massive difference. What warm-up drills do you use? Please share below.

Question Do all players above a certain level have the backhand flick? I don't think I can do it.

I don't think I have the wrist flexibility or strength to do the backhand flick. I was wondering if every pro player uses the backhand flick, and if that is a necessary shot above a certain level (4.0+, 4.5+), or if there are other equally effective techniques you can do on the same balls if you don't have the wrist strength or flexibility to do that shot.

I know you can backhand punch (or reset) some of those balls, but then they don't have the topspin and they're not as effective an attacking shot. I know you can backhand roll for topspin also, but it's still not a flick. Even if there are other good shots you can use in the same situations instead, I still don't think that is the same as having the full repertoire of shots so you can use each different one when it is the right situation for it.

But as I said, I just don't think I will be able to develop this shot anytime soon. I play quite a lot and I am getting very close to 4.0 (male player), and would like to move beyond that, so I think it is a problem for me that I can't do it. I feel like it is holding back my game already, and will become more of a problem in 4.0+. So, I am looking for advice. Thanks.

Discussion Dupr App now restricted Friends profile view behind $20 paywall

Post image
129 Upvotes

They giventh, they takenth. Now you cannot even follow and see your partners and friends progress.

How many of you look up your opponents in your brackets tournament during/before the games. Now only 3 profile views a month.

I feel this is a wrong way Dupr nickle and dime. I can see the premium feather like seeing how you do in regional standing and other insights. But not able to see your opponents and friends profiles???

How much Dupr have to alienate their players? If you are social organizers for matching, you cannot view and stack your players until… kaching $20 paid feather.

Can someone confirm this is only in Dupr apps and not website version?

Discussion Is it time for a community-built rating system?

Three free player searches a month...

Between the paywalls and people avoiding ranked games because they're afraid of losing points, I'm wondering if it's time for a community-built alternative.

I've been developing a community-driven rating system through Battle of the Parks, focused on fair competition, skill divisions (initial rating set by the community) and encouraging people to actually play ranked games. But I don't think everyone needs to reinvent the wheel. If someone is already building something promising, I'd love to collaborate. Otherwise, I'd welcome people helping develop what I've started, which will be 100% free for players and will stay that way.

Looking for people to help challenge the model, improve it and test it in real communities. Here's what was drafted so far and is very much in the early stages: https://battleoftheparks.org/bopr

Equipment Volair CMD - Weight Help

Recently purchased the Volair cmd. Love the paddle and is perfect for my game.

The bad: this paddle swings heavy! Contrary to the reviews I read. The head heaviness is causing both wrist and elbow pain but man I want to main this paddle if I can fix it. I added weight at the throat - 4 grams total at the throat - still heavy. It feels like the first 4 inches of the grip essentially has no weight in it. So I added weight to the handle and gripped over it - not ideal. It seems to have fixed some of my issue but not wrist mobility is suffering. Thought? How do I fix this balance problem.

Discussion DUPR enshittification?

Opened DUPR today and now without a DUPR+ account you can’t see people’s DUPR ratings or match history unless you spend a credit (you get three credits per “period”, not sure when they reset). Is anyone else encountering this?

I think maybe not seeing full match history without using a credit is fine, but I can’t even search and see numerical value now. This comes right after they give everyone DUPR+ free for a week, so I got to experience the mediocrity of the paid upgrade - you get a crappy AI summary of your month, and stratified performance/win percentage against specific DUPR ranges. And now you need it to do basic stuff like search my friend or opponents DUPR rating.

Very unfortunate development imo, clear cash grab

Edit: Wow okay upon further investigation, you get three free profile views a month. So basically you have to pay for DUPR plus now for a feature we routinely had and baseline expected from the free version in the past

Equipment Joola customer service

NEVER ordering from joola again..

They had their $99 paddle sale and I really needed a new paddle. I wanted to try a new brand so I ordered the Ben John’s IV 16mm Hyperion.

A week later I’m so excited to play with the paddle and I open it up and it’s the Anna bright Scorpeus. I’m like ok no problem I’ll just email them to get the right one. They email back informing me now the one I originally ordered is out of stock and they won’t be restocking them. So they say I can get an other paddle of the same value. I’m bummed but saw the Simone Jardím one is the same as Ben John’s except the handle is a little smaller. So I tell them I’ll replace it with that one.

I drop off the Anna Bright one to FedEx and email them. Then they go “oh now the Simone Jardím one is also sold out.” So at this point I don’t want any other paddle from their site although the Ben John’s V is similar to the IV so I would have taken that one but they said I couldn’t replace it with it. So finally I take the refund after all this hassle and they don’t even refund me the cost of shipping?!

So now I’m out the shipping cost of a paddle I didn’t even want in the first place because they couldn’t make this right. I will absolutely never support this company after this experience. Somehow even the “supervisor” didn’t have the authority to refund me the shipping or replace the wrong paddle with the Ben John’s V.

Discussion Unsolicited coaching during league play

I'm a newish player and just joined my first league. I think of these as a little competitive but still mostly about having fun and playing with different people. There's a woman there who I keep getting in my group, and gives unsolicited coaching almost every time I screw up. I've been open to it and will ask for more detail, but the actual advice isn't really all that helpful. For example, I kept popping the ball up yesterday and she told me not to pop it up. So I ask, how can I do that? And she says to just block the ball holding the paddle straight.

She then makes the exact same mistake shortly after and pops the ball up herself. Not only is the coaching unhelpful, it feels stressful playing in her group and makes me want to scrutinize her mistakes too. She even stopped the game to coach me and the other two players had to wait on us. I didn't think much of it the first time, but it happened again last night, so it'll probably happen again. I'll probably just ignore her from now on, but I don't like confrontation and I noticed how I was getting a lot of anxiety before the games yesterday and that has never happened to me before.

Is unsolicited advice ever okay in a league game? I don't mind strategic talk or asking me to cover the middle, but this experience is making it unnecessarily stressful for me. And I'd like to just crush her when I play against her, but I'm not as good. However, I do tend to play better with other players.

Equipment Adidas Gamecourt 3 insoles ARE replaceable

I thought they weren't, since they're glued in, but a nice redditor let me know that the adhesive is really weak. So you just pull them off and replace with your favorite brand, or just a fresh pair. I had completely destroyed the insoles in 3 months. Replaced them with Sofsole Air, and they feel like brand new shoes.

Discussion Serving foot faults in open play

I’m curious what people think about this, because I almost didn’t paddle tap this guy and I am normally a pretty chill guy on the courts.

Last night I played a best of 3 with randoms at the court I go to regularly and in the last game I was serving 10-9 and as soon as serve the ball my opponent called a foot fault for me stepping on the line. When I asked if he was serious he said “it’s a close game.” I’ve been playing multiple times a week at this place for over a year and never seen anyone call a foot fault on a serve.

Kitchen faults are fair game, because they are a much bigger advantage, or if I was like a foot into the court serving sure… but barely touching the line? It just amazes me that some people are so desperate to win in open play that they will do stuff like this. It really kinda soured the whole experience of what was otherwise a great set of games having him win like that.

Especially not even knowing if my foot WAS on the line because this is exactly the type of person who would just say something like that to get the ball back and have another chance at winning.

Discussion Why do most people register NOT their paddles after purchasing them?

I recently watched the podcast with James Ignatowich The Truth About Fake Pickleball Paddles - YouTube, and he mentioned about fake paddles. At about 27:00 minutes, he mentioned that the vast majority of people just do not register their paddles (NFC chip in the handle). Paddle companies don't want people to register their paddles, so it is more profits for the companies because they do not have to send out replacement paddles, and people just keep buying new one.
