Lyrics Sleight of Hand

Anyone else just get totally emotionally destroyed listening to the lyrics of Sleight of Hand? Hadn’t listened to Binaural in a while and put on driving last night. Maybe it’s because I’m nearing 50 and getting older that it hits harder.

“Found himself staring down, at his own hands… Not remembering the change, not recalling the plan… Was it…”

Was a lot younger than I am now when I first heard this song, and had made a lot fewer consequential choices, but I knew then what these words would mean to a future self.

What a great song.

This really hit me, maybe not as much as “more time, a time to dream…”

One of my favorite performances of Sleight is from San Diego 2013. Ed kind of goes into what the song is about and it makes for a great performance. Managed to hear it myself in Pittsburgh last year. I thought we were able to get Unemployable when Ed dedicated it to the working class hero but Sleight was even better. Plus it turned out to be the hand trilogy.

I’ll have to go back and listen, the Mansfield live version was one of my favorites.

Wondering, about wandering…

One of the songs I'm very grateful for hearing live.

I've been chasing it for 20 years, starting to look less and less likely.

I've actually heard it twice. Both on the 2000 tour. One night at Jones Beach, then again a few nights later in Saratoga.

I saw all of Binaural in Toronto years ago. Anytime I relisten now it makes me sad but Sleight of Hand gets me the most

Amazing show! I was there. That show made me fall in love again with that album.

Yeah as a desk jockey this song hits hard somedays. Just a hot iron to my soul.

I have a 2 hour daily commute (fortunately I’m hybrid so it’s not EVERY day). I love this song and it also makes me think way too hard about what I’m doing with my life, lol.

I've always loved this song so much! Underrated for sure

It’s a great lyric and the music is brilliantly understated.

It is a brilliant song about being invisible & slipping away

He waves goodbye to himself

Sits alongside Present Tense as the songs that really hit me in the feels.

After all these years, Present Tense has come back to me to become one of my mantras that helps me with anxiety and worrying about “what if”.

“It makes much more sense to live in the present tense”

Seriously thinking of getting this tattooed.

Not that I get physically emotional, but it takes me back to how I felt starting a career in 2000 with a large CPA firm in a new city where I didn’t know anyone.

I remember waking up, putting on a suit, grabbing my laptop bag, going to my car, driving to the metro, finding a seat, getting off the metro, walking to my office, all without speaking a word to a single person.

Lonely days… great song.

Good deep realization.

At about the same time, 2001, I was temping a job in Manhattan. I’d get off the bus in Port Authority and walk down 42nd St right into Times Square. Be in one of the busiest parts of the busiest cities in the world and still feel alone.

Fucking wild.

Serious… it’s crazy how the more people there are the more alone we become.

I really love SoH because it reminds me of where I started.

Sleight of Hand is one of the four songs on Binaural that are still in my top 20 PJ songs.  It’s stunning both musically and lyrically and like most songs on the album also sounds amazing live. ( Thin Air, Light Years and Of the Girl are the other three)

It’s always been such a powerful song and it does hit harder turning fifty myself in May. Aging has a shitty and effective way of forcing you to measure yourself against others on milestone birthdays and this is a heavy one.

“Lost on a road he knew by heart.” Holy fuck. Then it opens up and is just an absolutely cinematic brilliance of sound. And back to its modest self again. Genius in musicianship matching the words perfectly.

Depressing and beautiful song that makes the album for me

Sleight of Hand and Elderly Woman are both enough to provoke an existential crisis.

Everything about this goddamn song is so good. The lyrics, Mike’s guitar part, the background vocals. It’s a spectacular song

So so underrated….has such a Radiohead space feel to it. Amazing.

I have always loved Sleight of Hand. The Katowice 2 version is perfect (as is the studio one)
