Jimi. No comparison...way too young and way too talented.

13

u/StaticInTheAttic8 Nov 19 '24

Went nuts when PJ does Little Wing šŸ–¤ Mike loses himself in the best way šŸ–¤

7

u/oyisagoodboy Nov 19 '24

I lost it when I discovered that one. It's one of my favorite Jimi songs.

5

u/StaticInTheAttic8 Nov 19 '24

Seeing it live is unreal. šŸ–¤ā˜„ļø

2

u/I_Feel_Rough Nov 20 '24

His little wing cover is perfect. He's another candidate to bring back!

2

u/[deleted] Nov 21 '24

This is the answer, but goddamn I miss Amy's pipes!!

2

u/Own-Bar-8530 Nov 19 '24

Absolutely. The things he could’ve done .

2

u/ForceGhost47 Nov 19 '24

ā€œMusic is like religion to me. There’ll be music in the hereafter too.ā€

2

u/grafxguy1 Nov 19 '24

Totally agree, Jimi all the way.

33

u/Cheeto024 Nov 19 '24

Shannon Hoon

Or Bradley Nowell

17

u/rgrossi Nov 19 '24

Love Blind Melon. I think they are under appreciated, i don’t hear many people talk about them. I wish I had a chance to see them before he passed

8

u/StaticInTheAttic8 Nov 19 '24

Their catalog almost seems to be largely unknown besides no rain and change. So much more beyond that. Shannon had such a voice.

5

u/rgrossi Nov 19 '24

Absolutely, I’ve listened to their album Soup countless times over the years

2

u/asburymike Nov 20 '24

Come now and listen babe
I gotta reason why I behave
Like a child with a light in eyes
Running naked on a cold winter night
I am like a pigeon that is spreading
It's wings to fly away to better things
Like a hammer that has made
A dent in every little single cent you've spent

10

u/oyisagoodboy Nov 19 '24

I didn't really appreciate Blind Melon when I was younger. Now it's a favorite. I'll put that on over most bands of that time frame.

1

u/GeorgiaBulldogs Nov 19 '24

Still my favorite band.

3

u/SomewhereLow5155 Nov 19 '24

I still rock Galaxie regularly - one of my favorites. I saw BM with Flowerhead at a tiny Tucson club in college. Blew me away. Then saw Hoon with GnR. Such a unique debut record.

2

u/StaticInTheAttic8 Nov 19 '24

Sublime- I know the self titled album front to back from middle school. I'm aging myself. Lol.

2

u/Cheeto024 Nov 19 '24

We’re all aged, my man

3

u/PJfanRI Nov 20 '24

Came here to say Shannon. I still feel like he was just starting to hit his strive when he died.

2

u/kitchenerguy77 Nov 19 '24

Bradley was my first thought

3

u/Cheeto024 Nov 19 '24

They both had pretty high ceilings, in my opinion. Would have love to see what they created as they aged

1

u/Fennel-Revolutionary Nov 21 '24

I love sublime and I would love to see what Brad thought as main stream music moved closer to a hip hop influence.

34

u/nkrgovic Nov 19 '24

No one said Layne Staley?

10

u/Patmurvis Nov 20 '24

Layne Staley

38

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '24

Chris Cornell

3

u/goosehaf Nov 20 '24

Layne Staley

0

u/GrizzKarizz Nov 20 '24

I don't know if I'd extend his pain any longer than needed. If we could fix his mental issues, then yes; it would be great for him to perform once again.

0

u/theronster Nov 20 '24

Exactly. Everyone naming drug addicts and depression victims - are you going to be there for them to help them get over their demons? It’s no picnic. And you might have to realise that it’s a choice between them doing that and making more music. Sometimes the music these people make is a symptom of their problems.

-2

u/Aoskar20 Nov 20 '24

The only correct answer.

18

u/Hogonthestorm Nov 19 '24

Gord Downie

6

u/ErmahgerdYuzername Nov 20 '24

Gord was one of the best front men I’ve ever seen. He could captivate you for the entire show in addition to the music fucking rocking. Had the pleasure of seeing them about 11 times. His death has probably hit me the hardest out of any musicians, Cornell would be second.

1

u/Hogonthestorm Nov 20 '24

Incredible front man. Amazing lyricist. I love his work but he also always just seemed to be a good person. All too often these days main stream artists are in the news for the wrong reasons.

5

u/canadian_running Nov 19 '24

100% šŸ˜”

25

u/rgrossi Nov 19 '24

Jerry Garcia

7

u/TarHeelDead414 Nov 19 '24

As a deadhead who used to be a big Pearl Jam fan but hasn’t listened in like a decade, I’m surprised this is the top answer.

PS - hell yea, definitely Jerry

2

u/THXHVAC Nov 22 '24

Easy Answer

3

u/ChinaCatRider1 Nov 19 '24

Yep. Came here for this.

Close second is John Bonham so Zeppelin could have continued.

Third is Hendrix, because, duh.

1

u/ethanvyce Nov 19 '24

Up voting the Whaler Deadhead

-2

u/KieranJalucian Nov 19 '24

it would be great if he were still here, but if you bring him back at age 53 he’s still gonna be dead in two years.

Artist like Jimi Hendrix, Kurt C, Janis, at least you might some mileage out of them

3

u/mccabedoug Nov 20 '24

When asked this question previously my response would always be Jerry only if he was not addicted to any drug and didn’t smoke. If that wasn’t the case, you’re right, he’d be dead in a couple years max.

0

u/KieranJalucian Nov 20 '24

I don’t know why my statement is controversial. I love Jerry, but he was 53 going on 83 when he died of heart failure and unless this resurrection also includes restoring him to full health and curing all his bad habits, he’s gonna die again soon anyway.

2

u/mccabedoug Nov 20 '24

I didn’t say your statement is controversial. I’m saying I’d pick him if he could come back clean and stay clean.

25

u/rcknfrewld Nov 19 '24

Nobody says Kurt yet?

3

u/luthienxo Nov 19 '24

Because he’s still alive. Didn’t you know he faked his death and is now Rivers Cuomo? TikTok doesn’t lie.

0

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '24

3

u/rcknfrewld Nov 19 '24

Outraged? I asked a question.

0

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '25

16

u/TeeAyeKay Nov 19 '24

Joe Strummer

5

u/Headfullofyarn Nov 19 '24

His death was so devastating to me. He was on the upswing again putting out such great new music. I’m still gutted.

27

u/BigBlueHubba Nov 19 '24

Tom Petty

21

u/AlienInvasiveSpecies Nov 19 '24

Roy Orbison. Might be unpopular with this group compared to other people, but what a fucking voice.

1

u/jotyma5 Nov 20 '24

He went out a legend, just having had a great comeback album and being part of the Wilburys. My answer is Tom petty, but I respect your answer.

0

u/SmallAndPassingThing Nov 19 '24

Would be on my list before the dude from sublime lol

1

u/Geronimo2U Nov 20 '24

No argument from me. Wrote beautiful music and had the voice of an angel.

0

u/ErmahgerdYuzername Nov 20 '24

Good pick. I still listen to some of his music to this date. His song ā€œPretty Paperā€ is always on my Christmas playlist.

0

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '24

18

u/egad9 Nov 19 '24

Freddie Mercury

1

u/mutaully_assured Nov 23 '24

Shocked this wasn't the top or adjacent, the man was an inspiration and had a voice that could kill.

13

u/StoneyG214 Nov 19 '24

Eddie Van Halen

Adam Yauch

9

u/Own-Bar-8530 Nov 19 '24

Hendrix for sure

2

u/CAMMCG2019 Nov 19 '24

Without a doubt, my top choice.

8

u/IslesFanInNH Nov 19 '24

Shannon Hoon is my only answer!

10

u/justjoeindenver Nov 19 '24

I want Petty back - but I'd also like to see what Prince is up to.....

10

u/ddeadtomato Nov 19 '24

Dimebag Darrell.

0

u/I_Feel_Rough Nov 20 '24

And his brother!

12

u/urbanlocalnomad Nov 19 '24

Dolores O’Riordan

7

u/cosmoboy Nov 19 '24

My girlfriend just asked who I'd want to see in concert that I never did. Soundgarden without hesitation. I loved grunge but I just didn't get into Soundgarden until they'd broken up. Big regret.

11

u/Homey-78 Nov 19 '24

Weird that nobody said Cobain yet… I think he could have had an amazingly long career similar to EV.

7

u/IslesFanInNH Nov 19 '24

Personally, I think Nirvana was over rated and that they had already peaked. I don’t think Cobain would have progressed any further than the band already had.

3

u/oyisagoodboy Nov 19 '24

That and once I realized that they stole so much of their music and weren't as original as they were made out to be, it kind of killed them for me. There's a few songs I still like, but for the most part, I prefer Blind Melon, Pearl Jam, and Alice n Chains from that sound.

3

u/brute-squad Nov 19 '24

genuinely asking, what did Nirvana steal?

2

u/oyisagoodboy Nov 19 '24 edited Nov 21 '24

I've seen a few deep dives, but here are a few videos with the songs back to back.

Part One

Part two

Part Three

This 9 year old Reddit post has a lot of links and examples in the post and comments

So all and all about 20 songs.

Hey. Instead of downvoting, why don't you use your big kids' words and tell me why you are upset or you think I'm wrong.

0

u/shiverm3ginger Nov 19 '24

Sliding doors may nor have gotten Foo Fighters.

0

u/THXHVAC Nov 22 '24

Not weird. There’s actual talent we miss and it’s a long list

10

u/Zestyclose-Collar552 Nov 19 '24

I gotta go with John Lennon

1

u/Rivertalker Nov 20 '24

Absolutely. More than just the music

1

u/Zestyclose-Collar552 Nov 20 '24

He jut had such a terrible death. Of all my favorites I think he deserved to live.

6

u/procrastinator2112 Nov 19 '24 edited Nov 21 '24

Neil Peart

1

u/JayOnSilverHill Nov 20 '24

Sad that I had to scroll down this far to find Neil

5

u/Smallchange006 Nov 19 '24

Shannon hoon. I miss that voice.

6

u/ProffesorDog Nov 19 '24

Jeff Buckley

4

u/PaoloilTerzo Nov 19 '24

Chris Cornell. I still have trouble listening to Say Hello to Heaven and Seasons.

4

u/sullyqns Nov 20 '24

Amy Winehouse

5

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '24

Chester Bennington

1

u/ToaZtyWoaZty Nov 20 '24

My first thought

1

u/theronster Nov 20 '24

He’d probably not thank you for it. 2 weeks tops before he’s gone again.

Bringing someone like that back won’t fix their issues.

1

u/ToaZtyWoaZty Nov 20 '24

Kinda weird that everyone said Chris with you saying that

2

u/Round-Disk-1728 Nov 19 '24

Jeff Buckley

This song was written about him, by Chris Cornell (they were friends):

3

u/Pvt_Hudson_ Nov 20 '24

Biggest tragedy in music history IMO.

2

u/tooshytooshy Nov 20 '24

Also the most frustrating because it was likely accidental, he barely released any music and he was so unbelievably talented

2

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '24

Jeff Buckley no question.

2

u/jollebome76 Nov 20 '24

Jim Morrison for me and Jeff Buckley

2

u/Alive-Falcon-3498 Nov 20 '24

All these answers are good and none are wrong! For me John Lennon jumps out or Scott wieland but i keep thinking of the late great Robert Palmer

2

u/ImaginaryToday4162 Nov 22 '24

George Harrison

I also agree with Chris Cornell

4

u/Still_Steal_Steel Nov 19 '24

Scott Weiland

Layne Staley takes 2nd place.

4

u/Dynastydood Nov 19 '24

Duane Allman. Not only because of how great he was and how much more he had left to give us, but also because the downstream impact his death had on the rock scene in general is almost impossible to quantify. Duane avoiding that motorcycle wreck would've completely changed the lives and careers of Eric Clapton, Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, in addition to the impact his loss had on the revolving door of A-list artists for whom he was a highly sought after session player, including King Curtis, Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, and others.

Also, unlike many of the others we lost and wish to bring back, Duane had no deathwish and certainly would've liked to continue his life and career. Bringing back suicidal guys like Kurt or Layne would sadly just become a form of cruel and inhumane torture. Especially Layne, because his situation was about as bleak and hopeless as you'd ever see in a person.

5

u/John_Houbolt Nov 19 '24

I'm refusing the format of the question and making a llist:

Cornell

Prince

Curtis Mayfield

Hendrix

Adam Yauch

Cornell for sure. Not just for us but for his kids. But really for us.
