What’s one piece of “overlanding gear” you bought that you realized you absolutely didn’t need?

We always talk about the gear we can’t live without.

I’m more curious about the opposite.

What’s something you bought for overlanding because everyone seemed to have one… then after a few trips you realized it was unnecessary, annoying, too bulky, or just never got used?

Could be:

  • rooftop gear
  • storage systems
  • recovery equipment
  • lighting
  • camp kitchen stuff
  • power stations
  • anything else

And what did you replace it with, if anything?

I feel like the longer people do this, the simpler their setups tend to get.

Camped last weekend right off of a very twisty backroad so I brought the Ultra Bee with the supermoto set up. Normally I am playing in the dirt with the 21/18 wheel set but it was super fun to rip some backroads this time. Trying to camp every weekend that we have left before the snow flies! Then winter camping 😂.

Gear Question Comparing Tires for my needs

I just got my first 4x4 and I'm getting more and more into car camping and overlanding. I work full time and it's my only car so I daily drive and commute in it. I plan to camp or overland maybe 4-6 times per year at the moment.

Vehicle: Toyota 4Runner 2016 SR5 4x4 V6

Uses: Daily drive, small road trips to visit friends and family, occasional camping and overlanding. No rock crawling. Would like to be able to handle snow and general off road terrain on service roads. Emphasis on MPG, ease of ride, longevity, and noise. I think 33s on 17in wheels are as big as I'd go for now.

Candidates:
Falken Wildpeak A/T4W (LT 116/113R C)
BFGoodrich KO3 (LT 116/113S C)
Toyo Open Country A/T III (LT 116/113Q C)

What should I go with? Did I miss a brand that might better suit me? Thanks!

Victron or Redarc for the big lap of Australia?

g’day! i am wondering whether its better to go Victron or Redarc for a 12v system. We are in a 78 series v8 Landcruiser and will be very remote for long periods of time. Victron seems like generally the more well rounded option however Redarc seems like it’s more built for the Australian climate. Any advice or experiences? Thanks :)

Best 3/4 ton truck for overland?

I'm looking for a truck that has a respectable payload for this activity and want opinions. It's gonna be a big purchase so I dont want any regrets, buy once cry once. I've been looking at the F250 and the Ram 2500, any have experiences with those trucks? Any other trucks you would recommend?
