What’s the most useful stability test you’ve learned not to skip after an overclock?

I've seen plenty of overclocking results where a system looks stable because it can finish a benchmark or run a game without crashing, but I'm curious how people here decide when an overclock is actually reliable enough for everyday use.

A setup might pass a quick stress test and still develop errors during longer sessions, different workloads, or temperature changes. Memory tuning seems especially tricky because an unstable configuration can cause problems that don't immediately look like RAM instability.

I'm interested in the testing routines experienced overclockers actually trust, whether that's extended memory testing, repeated benchmark runs, checking error logs, or simply using the system normally for a while.

How do you personally decide that an overclock is stable? Have you ever had a configuration pass your usual tests and then fail in a completely unexpected way?

How far have you pushed your hardware without sacrificing stability?

There's something satisfying about squeezing extra performance out of your hardware, whether you're experimenting with GPU voltage and XBAR settings, hunting for a great GPU overclocking sample, or building a fresh system with new RAM. Every setup has its own quirks, and finding that sweet spot between performance, temperatures, and stability is half the fun!

What's your proudest overclocking achievement so far? Share your results, favorite tweaks, or lessons learned along the way. Let's see what everyone's hardware can do.

This is the farthest I can push this card on stock air cooling. This is my first time owning and testing an astral model. I have 2 other 5080 models that just fall short of 10k. I’m just wondering if this would be considered a good bin and if it’s worth pursuing a water block.

PCSPECIALIST RECOIL VII: I am getting frequent micro-freezes in games and occasional system stutters.

I am getting frequent micro-freezes in games and occasional system stutters.

The pattern is always similar:

  • GPU usage is stable, for example around 50–70%
  • then a micro-freeze happens
  • GPU usage suddenly drops to 20% or even 0%
  • at the same time, Disk Active Time jumps very high, sometimes to 100%
  • Average Response Time jumps from normal values to 3,000–9,000 ms
  • disk throughput during these spikes can still be extremely low, sometimes only a few KB/s or a few hundred KB/s

System drive:
PCSPECIALIST PCS3480 2TB NVMe SSD
Firmware: SN11665
Interface: PCIe 3.0 x4
Driver: Microsoft Standard NVM Express Controller

Tests already done:

  • CrystalDiskInfo: Good, 91% health
  • Critical Warning: 0
  • Media and Data Integrity Errors: 0
  • Error Information Log Entries: 0
  • Temperature around 41–42°C
  • CHKDSK /f /r: no file system errors, 0 KB in bad sectors
  • WinSAT: around 1993 MB/s sequential read and 2639 MB/s sequential write
  • Clean Boot: no change
  • Microsoft Defender disabled for testing: no change
  • PCIe Link State Power Management disabled: no significant change
  • NVIDIA Overlay disabled: reduced micro-freezes, but disk latency spikes still remain
  • Realtek 2.5GbE controller disabled: slightly fewer freezes, but problem remains
  • Event Viewer does not show obvious stornvme / disk timeout errors
  • Storage Reliability Counter has shown ReadLatencyMax / WriteLatencyMax / FlushLatencyMax around 4,000–5,000 ms

The strange part is that the SSD benchmarks normally and SMART reports no problems, but during normal use or gaming it occasionally stalls for several seconds.

Could this be caused by:

  • NVMe controller/firmware instability
  • StorNVMe driver
  • PCIe link/controller issue
  • motherboard/chipset issue
  • or a failing SSD that still reports healthy SMART?

Any ideas on how to properly diagnose these intermittent NVMe latency spikes?

Stable daily settings are more impressive than squeezing every last MHz out of your hardware

Honestly, I think overclocking gets more interesting when you stop treating every component like it needs to hit its absolute limit.

There's nothing wrong with chasing benchmark records or experimenting with XOC BIOS settings, aggressive voltage adjustments, and tight memory timings. That's part of what makes this hobby fun. But for a daily system, I'd rather have a slightly slower setup that runs reliably than one that crashes randomly or needs constant tweaking just to stay stable.

I also think people put too much weight on the silicon lottery. Getting a chip that handles higher clocks or tighter timings is great, but knowing how to tune the hardware you actually have matters more than comparing your results to someone else's golden sample.

The same applies to RAM. Copying someone's 6000 MT/s timings might work perfectly on their kit and memory controller, but that doesn't mean your system will behave the same way. Stability testing is worth the time, especially when memory errors can cause problems that aren't immediately obvious.

For me, a successful overclock isn't just one that passes a quick benchmark. It's one that delivers a measurable improvement without compromising everyday stability, temperatures, or noise.

I'd rather spend an evening finding the best stable settings for my own hardware than chase a number that looks impressive in a screenshot but makes the system unreliable.

Does an aggressive Curve Optimizer induce system stutter and lag under full load?

I have a 9950X3D, and I managed to achieve a stable -30 curve optimizer with curve shaper. But I'm noticing that when I have an intense workload, the computer really becomes unusable: mouse movement goes out the window, things take a long time to activate, Alt+Tab takes forever, etc. So this is not even about gaming.

I'm aware of what a full system load feels like, so this is beyond the normal lag on full system load.

My temperatures are great during said problems, 75-80 C. I can get it to 95C under stress testing, but when the problems happen, it's only around 80C.

Help Request - RAM Easy timings for 6000MHz CL36 kit?

Hello! I’m running a Ryzen 7 9800X3D. My motherboard is an ASUS TUF B650 PLUS. I have a Hynix A-die 6000MHz CL36 2x16 single rank, dual channel kit from Corsair (Corsair Vengeance). My cpu is watercooled, I have an MSI Ventus 3x OC 4070 Super, but I do not have a dedicated RAM fan.

For the longest time, I’ve had “EXPO I” selected in the Ai Tweaker section of the BIOS and forgot about it. I have not encountered any issues in games whatsoever, nor in Windows. I had the voltages and whatnot set to Auto.

A few days ago, I stumbled across Buildzoid’s video from early 2023 and mindlessly copied his Hynix A-die settings. Of course, they aren’t tuned for my kit in particular. Is there anything better I can use currently? Obviously ideally I go through the entire process myself but I haven’t had a lot of free time lately due to university so if someone kind could help me out, regardless if feeding me straight timings or a cheatsheet or their own two cents, I would be very grateful :) Best I can do atm is leave AIDA/Karhu running while I go to uni to test stability which I haven’t done previously on EXPO I since it always worked fine. A little scared to mess something up so I’d appreciate some general advice

OC Report - GPU Mvolt and xbar overclock on 4070 ti super

4070 ti super user here. I set 2730Mhz @975mv + 1000Mhz on mem.
Via afterburner, speedway benchmark score was 64xx. Clock speed dropped under 2700 sometimes. Unstable clock speed.
Via Mvolt, score was around 6700. Stable 2730Mhz. Really good!

Added xbar + 200Mhz, the score became around 6840.

Changed mem to +1500Mhz, the score became 7000.

It feels like overclocking xbar can improve the boost from mem overclock!

Summary: I got around 11-12% performance boost from stock via uv and oc!

DDR5-6000 EXPO instability on Ryzen 7 9800X3D — trying to identify whether it’s RAM, the memory controller, or BIOS settings

Post image
2 Upvotes

PC specs
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
Motherboard: MSI B850M Gaming Plus WiFi 7 (MS-7E66)
RAM: TeamGroup T-Force Delta RGB White DDR5-6000, 32GB (2×16GB), CL30
GPU: PowerColor Red Devil RX 9070 XT 16GB Spectral Limited
PSU: ASUS ROG Loki 850W SFX-L Platinum
CPU cooler: Corsair Nautilus 360 RS ARGB White AIO
Storage: Kingston M.2 NVMe SSD
OS: Windows 11
BIOS: Latest available BIOS, according to MSI’s support page
Problem
I’m trying to get DDR5-6000 EXPO stable. I’ve been running OCCT CPU + RAM tests and experimenting with CPU VDDCR_SOC voltage. EXPO is enabled and UCLK is set to MEMCLK (1:1) for the 6000 MT/s tests.
OCCT test history
DDR5-6000 EXPO, UCLK 1:1
VDDCR_SOC 1.265 V: First run completed 1 hour with zero errors.
VDDCR_SOC 1.265 V: Second run — OCCT GUI crashed after approximately 20 minutes. Windows remained running. Reliability Monitor showed BEX64, exception c0000005, faulting application OCCTGUI.exe version 17.1.10.99. No OCCT test errors were reported before it closed.
VDDCR_SOC 1.265 V: Third run — one OCCT error at approximately 43 minutes. Exact error details not yet recorded.
VDDCR_SOC 1.270 V: Errors started appearing repeatedly after approximately 12 minutes.
VDDCR_SOC 1.255 V: OCCT errored also around 12 minutes.
Other testing
DDR5-5600 with EXPO enabled: Passed at least 21 minutes, and a later run reached 40 minutes with zero errors.
DDR5-4800 with EXPO disabled: An earlier run showed zero errors for approximately 14 minutes; this was not a full stability test.
DDR5-6000 with UCLK = MEMCLK/2 (1:2): Previously ran for at least 20 minutes without errors; full test result uncertain.
What I’ve tried / questions
BIOS is updated.
I’ve tried different VDDCR_SOC values, but higher voltage hasn’t consistently improved stability.
I’m not sure whether this is a RAM kit issue, the CPU’s integrated memory controller, motherboard/BIOS settings, or something else.
What would you do to get it running fully stable or is 1.265 stable enough i wont get issues? ( doubt) attached is zentimings from when i tested 1.28 (gave errors)

OC Report - RAM New Ram - New System??

Thumbnail

I have had a 13700K now for the past few years. Right when it came out, I got it. Fast forward a few years, cpu goes bad, i get the microcode update, get a new CPU and here we are. I built this system originally with an RTX 3080. For ram, I was thinking, why should I buy some more when I have a good kit from my 6700K. So I farmed that 4x8GB part to this new build (bad idea). Honestly gaming was good, but never great. I always had these stutters. No matter the game I played, the stutters were always there. Kind of got used to it, thinking it is what it is.

Fast forward I got a 5080. Bagged one for $1100, thinking this will resolve my issue for sure. FPS went up nicely, but guess what, stutters still fucking present. in-fact, now they are just MORE OBVIOUS.

I know the ram is the flipping culprit. Questioning if it is basically really worth considering upgrading the ram, or just say fuck this platform and move on when Ryzen 10 drops.

Did some research and with some guidance, I found a 2X 16GB DDR4 4000 (16-16-16-36) 1.4v on ebay for $250 shipped.

During this time of waiting, I start reading, watching videos, looking at the cheat sheet, just to have some understanding of what I am going to need to do.

Installed the ram, spent about 8-9 days of testing and tuning. This is what I ended up with. Ram Timings are in the Picture.

13700K
5.5 GHz All Core (PCore)
4.4 GHz All Core (Ecore)
5.0 GHz Ring

Voltage Under Load 1.323v

Ring Offset +0.046v
LLC 5
PL1/PL2 235W
DRAM 1.5v
VDDQ 1.45v
SA 1.349

Ran Prime for 4 hours and no problems. Ran Anta777 Extreme for 7 Cycles and passed.
Max temp on the ram is a bit high, 46.2C for DIMM1 and 44.2 for DIMM3. I am getting the heat spreaders from AlphaCool and the gelid ultimate pads tomorrow to drop temps another 4-7C. If temps drop to 40C, I will max tREFI, is what I am thinking. Dropping system latency to about 43nS.

Overall Performance improvements

I didn't have much of a test bench. I only tested 2 titles and Cinebench R26. Plus my testing method was probably shit 😂.

I kept my same mVolt+ profile to try and make this as fair as possible. GPU is an RTX5080, which is scoring about 9850 on Steel Nomad for daily driver profile.

These test were performed on my system and these are the performance gains I have seen in games and in synthetic testing. I would say In the end, this was the most impactful upgrade of this build. There are no stutters. No matter the game I am playing now, they have completely disappeared. Frames are much more consistent, while max FPS did increase about 5%, My 1% lows shot through the roof. System responsiveness is on another level as well. This should definitely last me a couple more years. This just proves that memory sub-timing optimization is often more impactful than a raw CPU generational upgrade. Very happy with the improvements. It genuinely feels like I got a whole new Platform.

6000C30@C28 with tighter secondaries, what to do next?

Been tuning my T-Create Expert 6000C30 2x16GB A-die kit paired with a 9700X + ASUS B850-I. Cooling is a bit limited since I’m in a Midori 5L with an L9a. I replaced the RAM heatsinks with ZCOOI full-aluminum ones, and adding dedicated RAM fans may be possible.

Current setup is 6000 28-36-36-36 with tightened secondaries, UCLK=MCLK, 1.36V VDD, 1.35V VDDQ and ~1.25V SOC.

At 1.35V VDD, TM5 Absolut gave 1 error after ~29 minutes. I bumped only VDD to 1.36V and it passed 6h27m / 14 cycles with 0 errors.

I also tried 6200 1:1 with FCLK 2067, but it became unstable during boot and threw a few winload.efi recovery errors. After resetting everything, Windows was fine and both SFC and DISM came back clean, so I’m assuming the 6200 setup was just unstable.

CPU is currently PBO limits Auto, scalar Auto, +200MHz boost override and -25 all-core CO. Switching from motherboard limits to Auto dropped R23 multicore from ~21,500 to 20,233, but temps dropped from ~95C to ~80C and power to ~88W, which seems like a much better tradeoff for an L9a in a 5L case.

I’m mainly tuning for high-FPS CS2 rather than benchmark scores. What would you guys improve next? I’ve seen mixed opinions on pushing 6000 tighter, going for 6200/6400 1:1, or even 8000+ MT/s. I’m still pretty new to the tradeoffs between frequency and timings, so any insight would be appreciated.

No 8500gdm off for me

Post image
5 Upvotes

Ive tested every setting available with full voltage sweeps between them and nothing has given me stability. previously I hid some resistances on a post so here they are, if your chip needs more vddp but the sweetspot vddio is below the minimum for vddp these resistance changes to rtt's and procodt have been found to push the vddio sweet spot up a bit atleast on my system its not much but it let me get from passing 10 minutes to an hour 40. Because im a stubborn idiot I will keep messing with my resistances and cad bus and hopefully something I overlooked was the issue but this chip has issues with gdm off, even 8600 gdm on works so in theory 8500 gdm off should also work.

Benchmark Score Why cant I get my 5080 to hit an average clock higher than Max 3100?

Above is my current score and average clock using MVolt . Best I've gotten it to is 3100 but this requires a V/F curve on NVVDD flattened at 1050mv @ 3292 with 40hz clock offset as well. Best I can do.

Any attempts to try undervolt with V/F curve results in less score and less average clock. Top scores are getting 3300 clock average somehow. Even though theirs might not be stable I just don't understand why I can't hit it.

Help Request - CPU 14900K on fixed 1.36 V + DDR5-6400 on a single stick, light daily use: what would you change for longevity?

Hi all,

I'd like a sanity check on my daily setup. My main worry is long-term reliability. Usage is light, no sustained heavy loads, and CPU temps sit around 40-60 °C.

System:

  • CPU: i9-14900K
  • Board: ASUS Z790 Hero Intel Atx Ddr5 Lga1700, latest BIOS with the post-Vmin-shift microcode (0x12F)
  • RAM: Kingston Fury Renegade 32GB (1x32GB) DDR5-6000 CL32 (KF560C32RW-32), single stick in DIMM_A2
  • Cooling: Gigabyte Aorus Waterforce X 360
  • Stability so far: no crashes or BSODs

Current BIOS settings:

  • Intel Default Settings, Extreme profile (PL1=PL2=253 W, IccMax 400 A), ASUS MCE disabled, CEP and UnderVolt Protection enabled, eTVB/OC TVB on
  • Vcore: Manual mode, fixed 1.36 V; LLC Level 5 with AC/DC loadline sync enabled; SVID Behavior and IA VR Voltage Limit on Auto
  • RAM: XMP I profile (6000 CL32-38-38-80, 1.35 V VDD/VDDQ), but DRAM frequency manually set to DDR5-6400 with the same primary timings; SA GV disabled; Memory Controller voltage, System Agent and VCCIN_AUX all on Auto

What I'd like your opinion on:

  1. A fixed 1.36 V stays at 1.36 V even at idle/light load. Would you go back to Auto, or use Adaptive/Offset (small negative) plus an IA VR Voltage Limit around 1.40-1.45 V? What's best for longevity with light use and low temps?
  2. Is DDR5-6400 on a single 32GB stick with Auto VDD2/SA fine for 24/7? From what I've read it's only ~1-3% faster than XMP 6000, so should I just drop back to 6000? Which VDD2/SA values do you consider safe for daily use?
  3. Anything else that looks off or that you'd change (Extreme vs Performance profile for an i9, LLC level, SA GV, etc.)?

I can share the full BIOS profile export if it helps. Thanks!
