Discussion Saw the discount and immediately folded
Bought Outlast Trials as my second Steam purchase and genuinely enjoying it, so I decided to check out the original games. Then I saw the entire trinity bundle with an absolutely ridiculous discount.
Three horror games for the price of a snack? Yeah, I’m not financially responsible enough to ignore that deal.

Question Were you a child the first time you played/watched Outlast?
I remember when i was 7 i was at my cousin’s house and he played outlast as i watched. I watched until the part Tragger cut off Miles’s fingers. I remember how horrified i was. Then i started having nightmares, seeing Tragger or losing my fingers. Years later i was wandering around steam and saw Outlast and i was like “ This looks familiar”.

Suggestion Subject: New Trial & Enemy Concept for The Outlast Trials: "Shadow Nightmare" / Project "Entity 90"
Subject: New Trial & Enemy Concept for The Outlast Trials: "Shadow Nightmare" / Project "Entity 90"
Dear Red Barrels Team,
As a huge fan of the Outlast universe and The Outlast Trials, I would like to pitch a unique concept for a brand-new, ultra-hardcore Trial and a terrifying psychological enemy that introduces entirely new gameplay loops and tactical challenges.
📑 TRIAL OVERVIEW: "SHADOW NIGHTMARE"
- Duration: A massive, high-stakes "Raid-like" marathon lasting 1.5 to 2.5 hours.
- Atmosphere: Complete, pitch-black darkness. No background music, no ambient noises, and no other standard Exopops on the map. The only sounds are the players' footsteps, their heavy breathing, and the silent dread of the entity.
- The Twist (On High/Extreme Difficulties): Night Vision Goggles (NVGs) are completely disabled. Instead, Reagents are equipped with a dim, narrow-beamed hand flashlight that rapidly drains and requires constant battery scavenging.
👤 THE ENEMY: PROJECT "ENTITY 90"
A thin, emaciated, 165-170 cm tall humanoid specimen covered in light-absorbing matte-black slime. It has no mouth (surgically sewn shut by Murkoff) and only possesses faint, glowing white eyes.
- The Main Gimmick: The entity moves and stalks with absolute silence. It does not make footsteps, breathing, or rustling sounds.
- Blind Spot: Digital sensors cannot detect it. Through NVGs, Entity 90 is completely invisible. Reagents must turn off their goggles and stare into the natural darkness with their own eyes to spot its dim white lights on ceilings or walls.
🎮 CORE GAMEPLAY MECHANICS & OBJECTIVES
- The 2-Meter Critical Zone: The entity is completely static, lurking on ceilings or around corners like a spider. If a Reagent crosses a 2-meter radius without spotting it, the entity triggers a Shock Attack , emitting a deafening, high-frequency scream that concusses the player for 10 seconds (blurry screen, deafening ears) and flees.
- Advanced Repair Loop: To fix shattered lights, players must scavenge for fragile bulbs (can break if attacked), wires, and a telescopic pole tool to manually screw bulbs into high ceiling sockets while teammates cover their backs.
- Environmental Traps (Mimic Boxes): Traps disguised as medical containers. Failing a quick QTE results in the entity slamming the Reagent's head against the concrete wall, dealing 50% damage, causing 5 seconds of complete blindness and 2 minutes of heavy limping/staggering. If a player has low health, this attack instantly transitions them into the bleed-out/crawling state.
- Shadow Rage (5% Trigger & Silent Reaper Mode): If a Reagent maintains direct eye contact with the entity in the light for 20-25 seconds, there is a 5% RNG chance to trigger permanent Rage Mode (95% chance the entity just flees). In Rage Mode, the entity turns into a stealth assassin: it stalks a group of 4 players completely silently, instantly snaps the neck of the last player in line, and drags them away without a single sound. The team only realizes they are missing a teammate when they turn around. However, teammates always have a strict 1.5-second rescue window to hit the entity with a brick or a flare before the neck snap animation finishes.
- The Only Defense (Flares & Stun Batteries): Flares replace bricks/bottles. Throwing a lit chemical flare creates a 4-meter red safe zone that the entity cannot cross for 60 seconds. Additionally, rare Stun Batteries extend the flashlight's high-power mode by 3-4 minutes and grant a unique active ability: Flash Burst. Triggering this burst emits a blinding chemical flash that instantly stuns Entity 90 for 3-5 seconds, forcing it to drop a captured teammate and retreat into the dark.
🧠 REAGENT SANITY SYSTEM (From 100% to 0%)
- 100%–75%: Clear vision.
- 74%–50%: Screen edges blur. Small "Short Shadows" quickly dart across the floor on the periphery of vision.
- 49%–35%: Walls start warping and moving like waves. The entity uses Audio Mimicry, broadcasting fake voice lines of dead or alive teammates over the radio to lure players into Mimic Boxes.
- 34%–1% (False Eyes): Complete panic. The Reagent starts seeing hallucinated copies of white eyes and hearing fake whispers in empty dark corners, tricking them into giving false information to the team.
- 0% (Absolute Madness): The screen fills with black ink, triggering an Acoustic Vacuum (all game sounds vanish). Entity 90 steps from the dark and triggers one of its brutal executions (e.g., ripping out the spine, or crushing the Reagent into a bloody pulp against the wall).
🎁 REWARD: "THE ENTITY ECHO" SUIT
Clearing this 2.5-hour nightmare grants 1500 standard Murkoff Marks and a legendary, fully matte-black Reagent suit featuring phosphorescent white dots on the gloves and back that glow in the dark, mimicking the eyes of Entity 90.
Thank you for your time, passion, and for making such incredible horror games. I truly believe these mechanics could take the psychological terror of The Outlast Trials to an entirely new level!
Best regards,
[Reagent Smash]

Question New player question
So I got outlast, whistleblower and 2 this past week while they were on sale with PlayStation. I loved the first game and the dlc. It had great horror, made my heart beat race during chases and gave me this feeling that I needed to shower after beating it.
So I started the second game yesterday and it just doesn’t give the same feeling. It feels more in line with The Last of Us with a great story so far but feels like it lost its charm of the first game. Does that grittiness come back? I’m at the point where Lynne gets kidnapped the second time and you hide out in the crawl space of Jessica’s dads house. I’m not trying to come off as a hater but so far the first game and DLC felt more challenging and gave a feeling of true dread. I’m going to finish it either way and don’t want spoilers but just wondering about the atmosphere I guess. Thanks in advance!

Speculation Two TV miniseries about events that inspired Outlast are current projects for HBO! Weird coincidence
Just realised that two projects for TV that I’m eagerly waiting to enter production are kind of related, both being about inspirations for the Outlast series!
First, David Chase (The Sopranos) is returning to TV by writing a miniseries for HBO based on Project MKultra, an experiment that I think may have partially inspired the Murkoff Corporation and it’s experiments.
On the other hand, Bill Hader (Barry) is writing a miniseries for HBO about Jim Jones, Jonestown (People’s Temple), which is a clear inspiration for Temple Gate in Outlast 2, down to the mass suicide and Sullivan Knoth.
I know it doesn’t have anything to do with Outlast (oficially), but what a nice coincidence that two shows being written for HBO by such great showrunners and touching sensitive (and dark) topics are also about (if very different) inspirations for this franchise :)

Discussion The event was fine
I’ve seen several posts complaining about the event mission being “lackluster” and not hard enough. Some of you don’t seem to understand that it’s a world building mission, showing the back end of the world and the side we haven’t seen as well as filling in some extra lore such as where the assets live.
I know compared to maybe the first escape it might seem too easy, but this in the story itself is going into the backrooms of the facility while an outbreak is happening. Like why would there be a bunch of assets roaming in 1. Coils mission, and 2, when they are already killing staff around the facility.
And it’s not like it’s an “event mission” like the others of donate blood or gas. It’s a mini level to world build the next part of the story. Its difficulty also needs to meet the lowest difficulty for all players that stick to introductory.
The mission is about telling a story less about gameplay. Unless you want a on rails cutscene to tell you the lore and nothing else.

Question Worth it?
Played both Outlasts back to back recently for the first time. LOVED the first one, disappointed with the second. But I’m itching for more outlast games so Trials has always been around! I’ve heard good things about the game and i presume it’s a multiplayer survival game like DBD or Halloween 2026 and connected to the mainline games, right? Is Trials worth playing?

Screenshot Finally done. Every achievement in Outlast, Whistleblower, and Outlast 2 is mine.
Finally cleared every achievement across the whole trilogy and wanted to share some thoughts on each.
Outlast 1 was genuinely fun, even on higher difficulties. The only one that gave me trouble was Energizer, though at least each attempt was short, so failing wasn't too costly. The real challenge was memorizing dark sections well enough to cross them without the camera. Fewer chase sequences compared to the sequel, and honestly I just felt more in control playing as Miles than I ever did as Blake.
Whistleblower was surprisingly easy and a lot of fun. Only took me 3 playthroughs total: one for story, one for collectibles, one for Insane difficulty. The Insane achievement only requires beating the game on that difficulty, so I could still recharge the camera battery freely, which made it way less stressful than I expected.
Outlast 2 was a different story entirely. Took me weeks, and I ended up writing my own full guide just to nail the Messiah achievement. The story felt weaker to me than Outlast 1's, and controlling Blake was rough: no infinite sprint, you need bandages when hurt, and in pitch black areas you see absolutely nothing, not even his own hands or feet. In Outlast 1, at least crouching let you see a few inches of Miles' feet, which made crossing dark sections manageable. The school sections felt like a chore to get through while going for Messiah and
I need to mention Nick and Laird specifically, these two bastards single-handedly ruined more of my Messiah attempts than anything else in the game.
