Question Mounting orchids

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

Hi guys,

I bought two regular, big, phalaenopsis orchids.
They are in bloom, thats how i got them like a week ago.
I want to repot them/ mount them on porous clay pottery, which I would fill with water.

I really like this idea, but does it really work??

I attach some reference I saw. (not my own pictures!)

Otherwise I would repot them in a seethrough pot again, but i read as well I should wait in either way until the blooming is finished, otherwise it drops tgem right away.
Am just worried about the “death plug” and would not like them to die.

Thank you!!

Thoughts on health of orchid and pests?

Hello!

Have just recently bought my second orchid from Walmart. The bunch there were in terrible condition as expected, but this one looked ok so I felt I needed to try and save.

It's been a couple weeks and there seems to be multiple bugs. Little small, long black bugs in the decorative pot. They do "jump" if blown. (I could not get a good image, they were so small. Hoping they are harmless?) And there are some webs and some white parts on the leaves. Im assuming spider mites, but havent actually found them yet. Thinking I'll give it a good rinse to try and dislodge surface pests. But should I treat with anything? Also found a couple of reddish little guys, not sure if they are the spider mites or something else.

Also looks like Moss medium and Liner only has one drainage hole. The surface roots turn silvery quick after watering although down below they are green. Been watering based on the below roots but am I doing too little? I think this room may be a bit dry and I've moved it further back from window cause looks like there is some sun damage. (new house so I am figuring out the environment ) I am having some trouble telling if I'm watering enough. Feels like surface is drying but bottom is not. Haven't tried soaking cause I heard moss medium and soaking isn't a good idea.

Was planning to repot after the bloom ends but with the medium and pests, wondering if I should just do it now and give the orchid a good rinse/clean and maybe leave it to dry out of medium for a bit before repotting.

Any knowledge on health would be appreciated.

Help Parasites on my Phragmipedium kovachii — how should I treat it?

Hi everyone!

I’m looking for some advice on my Phragmipedium kovachii. I’ve noticed some suspicious spots and possible pests on the leaves and around the base of the plant (see the second photo), and I’m worried about it getting worse.

Since Phragmipedium kovachii is such a special and sensitive orchid, I don’t want to use anything that could damage the plant or its roots.

Can anyone help identify what kind of pest or parasite this might be? Could it be spider mites, scale, mealybugs, thrips, or something else?

What treatment would you recommend that is safe for Phragmipedium kovachii?

Are there any insecticides, miticides, or home remedies I should absolutely avoid?

I’m a new to Phragmipedium kovachii and I’ve only had it for about two weeks. As I’ve already lost a couple of Paphiopedilums when faced with mealy bugs problem due to the stem rot after I’ve applied remedies against them I’m very worried about this one.

Thanks in advance for your help! 🌱

I have this orchid that was rescued from a bin. I’ve since repotted it and notice yesterday this new growth. Is it a new leaf? Can this orchid recover?

Orchid ID Are these named forms of Vanda tricolor?

It might be silly to ask as most forms of species aren’t named but Vanda tricolor seams to have a lot of different recognised variations in the wild so I figure it’s worth a shot. They have both flowered next to each other so I doubt it’s anything to do with that and also they flowered about a week apart. The labelum is quite different between them both and the color and shape is pretty different as well.

New leaves growing with some kind of rot at the crown

I have a number of orchids inside alongside a window. A few of them seem to have this kind of burn or rot near the crown when a new leaf is growing in. Anyone know what this is?

It's too bad the pink one has a broken petal and some brown-nose (grocery store handling), I really like the spider picture lol. Impressed the blooms are still holding though.

What are these micro bugs in my orchid? I've had this plant for over 2 years. I'm worried because a new spike is growing and I'm scared to repot it.

From what i remember tho, when this plant was given to us, its flowers were fully light pink. then ofc the flowers died off then this spike came up and produced these flowers with this patterning.

I think it looks beautiful, but good looks dosent always mean good health. is there anything wrong? or is this normal?

Does anyone know where I can buy a yellow Dendrobium nobile in Connecticut?

I've been searching for this orchid for a while now, checking local stores, Facebook Marketplace, and online shops, but I haven't had any luck finding it. I'd absolutely love to have one! Maybe someone knows where I can find one, or would be willing to sell me a cane. I don't mind growing it myself to eventually get my own orchid. Thank you so much

rescued these little babies from a sad and slow death at my job, they’ve been in a closet since august 🥲 I took them to a local shop and they planted them in hydrated sphagnum moss (their original medium) but unfortunately their third got crown rot and got pulled out today… I was investigating their roots and figured I’d send a pic to the pros here too
despite my username I’ve never owned orchids before lol and I just want to make sure they’re ok and if there’s more I could do!thanks for reading :)

Question Keiki or new flower stem(s)

Thumbnail

One of my patients gave me this orchid when she left the hospital last year. I managed to get another bloom spike and the aerial roots took off and love my bathroom window (dappled light). When I was doing a soak, I noticed these new spikes coming from the center of the plant. One looks like another flower spike but I'm not sure if the other is a new root (possibly). I checked the stem, and (as you can see in the first 3 pictures) there is something starting to grow (a keiki?). Any help will be appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Vanda

My curiosity is I’ve had a Vanda since May. She is very healthy and her roots get a good soaking at least twice a week and sprayed in between. Plenty of sunlight.
The only thing I don’t know about is feeding. Has anyone used Better-Gro orchid plus.
I’m really anxious for her to bloom. My other orchids do twice a year.

Help Brassocattleya blooming needs

I have a brassocattleya windward flare. First time owning one. Got it in may and it grew a ton of roots and a new shoot and leaf. However I'm not sure if it will flower again this cycle? Stage? Round of growth? I got it with 2 flowers on it but idk if the buds stalled or if they are still forming. I will send a before (blooming) and after (current) pics to help. The forth picture shows the newest mature growth. I expected a flower spike from it but idk if it will spike or not. so far photone says that my light reaches about 250-400 ppfd from where my plant is sitting. but i am using a phone app so it could be inaccurate.

I’m a botanical watercolorist with a penchant for the unconventional…the weirder, the better. I especially enjoy creating unusual compositions and using subjects that are not immediately recognizable as flowers. Hence my fascination with orchids.

While waiting for my own orchids to bloom, I am in need of some close up photos of blooms for my work. If you‘d like to donate to the cause and provide some fantastic photos of your weirdest blooms, I‘d be so grateful!

If I end up using your photo as reference for one of my pieces, I will post the end result on this sub and tag you.

Pictured are a quick watercolor study and preliminary graphite sketch of Paphiopetalum Fairreanum, along with the corresponding reference photo—courtesy of Pixabay.

Happy Halloween! TIA 😊

*This is not a product or service promotion and the above pictured pieces are NFS. Just simply sharing my craft and love of orchids.

Question To repot or not to repot

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

I am new to orchids, but I swear I have multiple that are thriving. These two are my problem children. The first one has pretty bad root rot. It was my first orchid, and I definitely didn’t trim enough of the dead roots away before repotting it, and I also didn’t soak my bark first, so it dried out constantly until the bark started absorbing water. I feel like I need to repot it again, but I’m concerned about stressing the plant out and killing it. Is it best to risk the stress and repot it or should I leave it be and hope it recovers?

The second orchid is the first orchid I’ve ever kept in a terrarium and, yeehaw. Mold. My plan at this point is to let it dry out completely and then soak it in hydrogen peroxide. Should it be taken out of the bark mix for that? Some of the bark is also moldy, so I am not sure if all the mix should just be tossed.

Help me save my children! My other babies are all growing new leaves and blooms but these guys are really determined to help me further my education in orchids.

I injured my phal’s bloom spike with an orchid clip which pinched it pretty severely on the one side 😭 this was maybe 4-5 days ago and the spike seems to have stalled growing however it’s not showing signs (yet?) of wilting. Has anyone else ever done this before?! How did it turn out?

Finally had a day off to try and take care of my mom’s orchid. Are any of these roots still good? Do I just cut everything off or keep it all and stuff it back into the pot with sphagnum moss?
