Seeking Recommendations Tired of carrying a laptop-backpack and handluggage on short business trips – looking for a underseat onebag

• Upvotes

Hey everyone,
I do a lot of short business trips (1–4 days) by train and plane. I'm tired of carrying a laptop backpack plus a rolling suitcase and want to consolidate into one bag.

It should fit under an easyJet seat (~45 x 36 x 20 cm)
Externally accessible laptop compartment (no digging through clothes)
Durable and water-resistant
Should also hold business casual clothes for a few days, chargers, and toiletries. Clamshell opening and a water bottle pocket would be nice.

One more thing: once I'm at the hotel, the bag becomes my daily commute bag – I take it to business meetings with just laptop, notebook, chargers etc., no clothes.

So far I've looked at
- fjällräven färden carry on 30
- B|Y expendable backpack
- tomtoc t66 28L
- samsonite outtrax
- osprey day lite 26+6

The osprey I did not really like from the look, even though this is often recommended.

What do you guys think?
Anything else to look into?

Best regards

Seeking Recommendations anyone know what breaks first after a year of one-bag travel?

Going full one-bag starting January. Read plenty of packing lists and gear reviews but nobody talks about what actually wears out over 12 months. For anyone who's done 6+ months this way, what needed replacing first, the bag, zippers, straps, cubes?

Seeking Recommendations Pants recommendation for hot and humid

Going to Indonesia in a couple of weeks and need suggestions for pants. Hot and humid with some water resistance and ideally offers some big protection! I have some shorts for beach days but will need something for the days in the national forest, specifically North Sulawesi.

Trip Report 5 weeks in Australia solo with a 38 litre bag

I spent 5 weeks down under with only a 38 litre bag for all my stuff.

I packed a little more than three changes of clothes, as well as a camera and a few print books.

The entire experience was so freeing, being able to pack up out of a hostel and know I had all my stuff with me, and have it light and movable enough to climb mountains and traverse the city was great.

I brought detergent to wash my clothes in the sink, and a clothesline as well.

This went about as smoothly as I had hoped, but there are a few things I wish I didn’t bring/do.

I brought a tote bag, but I wish I would have brought a packable backpack, and I would have swapped a print book for a kindle.

Def would have brought one less tshirt, and stuck to my two long sleeves.

I will be buying a soap container and an airmattress next time, I hsve one that packs into a pop can size.

Overall I learned a lot and because it was a solo trip, became a lot closer with myself.

Seeking Recommendations 7 Days in Puerto Rico

Hi all!

This is my first post here but I’ve been reading this thread for sometime. I have a trip coming up in February to Puerto Rico for 7 days with friends & family. Although this isn’t my first time traveling with just “one bag” I want to be strategic about it and need help with a packing list.

I’m a bit at a loss for exactly what to bring to Puerto Rico because of the excursions, beach time, and other activities we might be doing. If anyone has any recs for clothes or other important items to bring please let me know! I have different bags/back packs for the trip so depending on what I bring I have different sizes for carry on that still fit Deltas size, so bag recs not needed.

Female, 30.
Activities like the beach, walking tourist destinations, boat sail, going out to eat/night life maybe 2-3 times.
Staying at an airbnb I believe has access to washer & dryer too.

Just got this bag for a weekend trip. It seems like the laptop compartment doesn't completely close, but leaves a small gap. Normal for this bag? Pictures show from outside and inside.

Trip Report Bagsmart blast pro 38l travel backpack: 8 months of use

Post image
60 Upvotes

I've been using the bagsmart blast pro 38l travel backpack for about eight months now. I'm based in Madrid and usually travel around Europe for a week or two each month. I mainly use it for shorter trips and as my personal item when I need to bring a laptop.

The bag is 28l when not expanded and can expand to 38l when I need more space. For trips of 2 to 4 days, the 28l setup has been enough for me. If I need to pack a few extra things, the extra space comes in handy.

The clamshell opening makes packing pretty easy. I can open the bag up and see everything instead of digging around from the top. There's also a separate shoe compartment, so I don't have to pack my shoes with my clothes. You can fold the compartment away when you don't need it.

At around 1.5 kg empty, it's light enough for me to carry around all day. The sternum strap also helps when the bag is packed with more stuff, though I'd still try not to overpack it.

One thing I like is that it works for different trip lengths. I can keep it at 28l for a short trip or expand it when I need more room. I don't have to switch to a different bag just because I'm bringing a few extra things.

The main thing to watch is the size when it's expanded. At 28l, I usually keep it under the seat, while at 38l, I use it as a carry-on and put it in the overhead bin. I'd still check the airline's size limits before flying.

For the kind of trips I take, the size and layout have worked pretty well. I just wish the expanded version fit more airline personal item limits.

If anyone has questions about the bag, feel free to ask.

Packing List What I pack in my personal item for flights

Thumbnail
gallery
93 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I’m currently refining my underseat personal item pouch for short flights. I use this small drawstring bag to hold all my inflight essentials, mini toiletries, and meds so everything is easy to reach under the seat during trip.

Here is my current setup inside my small drawstring shoulder bag.

Bag and general items:

  • Drawstring shoulder bag that holds the whole setup
  • Blue pouch for small random items like hair ties, cotton swabs, and tissues
  • Pink pouch for travel docs, passport and ID
  • Silk eye mask for sleeping on long flights
  • Facewipes for quick freshen up
  • Hand cream, hairbrush, and headphones for music

Snacks and medicine:

  • Gum and few small snacks
  • Small power bank just in case
  • Mini medicine kit with basic painkillers, stomach meds and iodine swabs

I had a really rough stomach bug on a flight a while back, so now I never travel without a tiny medicine kit. Is there anything essential you think I am missing here?

Note on clothes:
For short 1 to 3 day trips, I keep my clothes setup ultra minimalist. I wear my main outfit layers on the flight and pack a small rolled extra shirt with lightweight undergarments in a tiny pouch. This drawstring bag is strictly my dedicated in-flight personal item for easy access under the seat!

Packing List 3 Months in Eastern Europe Winter Packing Help

Hi guys,

In mid-January, I am travelling from New Zealand to backpack in Eastern Europe for three months in hostels (with a five day layover in New York), before setting up in London permanently. I have never done something like this before, so I am looking for a bit of advice on my packing list. I have gone through a whole bunch of lists and tried to fine-tune my own one, but would appreciate some advice as I would like to pack light given the time period. However, I also don't want to be rash, and miss anything out given that I won't be going home back to New Zealand any time soon! If you have any thoughts as to whether I have missed anything glaringly obvious, or whether something can be cut (perhaps the question marks), I would greatly appreciate it. Complete beginner just looking for advice, no idea what is necessary/what might be provided at the hostel for me, or even if I have underprepared for the weather! Thank you so much in advance.

I am planning to take a 40-45 L backpacking bag, and a 10L day bag for reference.

List:

  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Moisturiser
  • Lip balm
  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Floss
  • Shaving cream
  • Razor
  • Deodorant
  • Body wash
  • Running shoes
  • Sneakers
  • Dr. Martens boots?
  • 3x shirts
  • 2x running shirts
  • 7x underwear
  • 5x socks
  • 2x shorts
  • 2x running shorts
  • Jeans
  • Black dickies pants
  • Rain jacket
  • Normal jacket
  • Warm sweatshirt
  • Hoodie
  • Jorts
  • Jandals?
  • Cap
  • Belt
  • Gloves?
  • Towel?
  • Paracetamol
  • Bandaids
  • Sleep mask?
  • Ear plugs?
  • Water bottle?
  • Dirty clothes bag?
  • Nail clippers
  • Portable charger
  • Universal travel adapter
  • Lightning cable charger
  • Book/s
  • Journal/s
  • Pens
  • Passport
  • Wallet
  • Earphones
  • Phone
  • Camera

Gear Do you carry a tech sack anymore?

I work in engineering and usually travel with 1-2 laptops, a Kindle, sometimes a Switch, obviously my phone, etc. Back when stuff had different chargers it made sense to carry multiple cables, but I recently got one of those nice 140W charger bricks with 4 ports, and at this point all my devices are USB C. So I've been carrying this whole "tech sack" with just a single brick and 2 USB C cables. At this point I'm figuring it makes more sense to carry the brick and cables directly, but does anyone have other uses for their tech sacks? The only thing I can think of is that it protects the cables better than just throwing them into the bag.

Gear Heading to Dublin in November — Is this setup enough for the weather?

Hi everyone! I am from southern Italy (i.e., hot country) and I'll be visiting Dublin (town only) in November and wanted to get your feedback on my gear setup.

Here is what I’m planning to wear/bring:

  • Base layer: Wedze thermal shirt
  • Mid layer: Quechua MH100 fleece
  • Outer layer: Quechua NH500 waterproof/warm jacket
  • Pants: Quechua SH500 warm trekking pants
  • Footwear: Timberland boots + Quechua hiking socks
  • Accessories: North Face beanie, neck warmer, and gloves

Will this keep me warm and dry for walking around the city and taking day trips, or am I missing anything crucial, like an additional hoodie or thermal leggings?

Thanks in advance!

Seeking Recommendations Southeast Asia Trip- 3 weeks- December

Hey everyone,

I do need help in trying to decide bottoms for my upcoming trip in Dec, where temperatures are expected between 0-10 degrees C.
I am planning to take 26+ 6 Osprey bag.
I am taking 1 Uniqlo heat tech (as base layer); 1 merino wool base layer; 1 fleece jacket; 1 half sleeves merino wool t shirt; 3 dress tops; 1 merino wool base layer bottoms. However, I always wear jeans but now with winter traveling, I want something more light weight.
What bottoms do you suggest on top of merino
Wool base layer- which are light weight, can take less space in backpack? Please suggest for both men and women.

For outer layer jacket- I am confused between pajar jacket (good atleast until -30c) or heat tech Columbia jacket (good until 0C).

Thank you for your help!

Seeking Recommendations Family 1 bagging with toddler - seeking advice tips

Trip to Scotland coming up in winter. Won’t be staying with family.

Got older kids who can carry some/most of their own junk in their own backpacks but have a toddler who is barely up for the challenge of walking around without wanting to be on my shoulders. Let alone carrying their own backpack.

My eldest used to carry their own backpack for trips at this age and it lulled me into a false sense of security.

Any tips on how to manage one bagging with a toddler (especially one that can be a bit lazy)?

I’m thinking baby zen yoyo as carry on and jam the youngest kid’s stuff in there.

I fear we may have to move to “carry on only” but still multi bag to achieve it. Open to any suggestions on making kids bags easier to manage.

Seeking Recommendations The shoe dilemma

I’ve been travelling hand luggage only for several years now, but I’m still yet to find a good hack for bringing shoes. My travels are fairly extreme with lots of changes in climate and environments, from cities, to quite advanced hiking, to beaches all in the same trip. I’m also very active and workout everyday when away. This leads to my dilemma. I need to bring at a minimum hiking boots, running shoes, and flip flops. I travel standby with strict dress codes so I can’t wear the hiking boots or open toe shoes, so I usually have to wear nicer shoes on travel days, meaning the other 3 pairs are packed.

I’m looking for recommendations on packing hiking boots. I’m open to buying a new bag if someone has something they swear by. I usually stuff mine with whatever I can or occasionally I clip them externally, although I do find this annoying as they swing around, so a recommendation on how to secure them externally without all the swinging would be welcome too.

Discussion The onebag lifestyle saved our trip from ending badly

2.7k Upvotes

So not sure if I'm allowed to post this here but it's surely onebag related.

We've both been traveling through Indonesia with only one backpack. It allowed us to rent a scooter at the airport and take it everywhere and also drive back, avoiding expensive transfers and reliability on someone/something else as well.

But where it really saved us was with the flight back. We went from Lombok to Jakarta and booked a 5 hour layover to catch our flight from there via Abu Dhabi back to the Netherlands. However the first domestic and cheap flight had a 4,5 hour delay, taxied for a long time on the runway which left us with only 40 minutes left in Jakarta impossible said the flight attendants. On some airports that's enough but for you guys that have been to Jakarta it's huge. If we'd miss the flight it would cost us a lot of extra money and extra day(s) to stay in Jakarta. We had to book a total new flight and its not covered by insurance. That'd leave a really bad taste rounding up the trip, so we were eager to try and make it.

Other people from the plane already gave up because they had checked luggage and different airlines so had to wait for the backpacks or suitcases, get a taxi, check everything in again at the other terminal etc etc.

We prepared everything to be as smooth as possible. So no things in pockets, belt in my backpack, backpacks under our seats and passport ready. We were able to sprint out of the plane and for the exit immediately, take a taxi, bags on our lap. The guy raced to terminal 3, we sprinted out, went through security and immigration in less than 10 minutes. Didn't even know this was possible especially at such a big airport. Everyone helped us. We could get in front of the whole waiting line.

Then came the next challenge. Running from gate 10 to 2, which was supposed to be at least a 20 minute walk. We had only a few minutes before the plane would leave. With one backpack we were both able to run for quite a while and eventually jump on one of those golf carts thing for the last stint. We arrived at the gate and they were just rounding up, basically making it on the last minute. The plane was full and funny enough we were able to place our 35L backpacks under the chair as well.

Everything from the flexibility, weight, bulk, speed, not having to check in etc showed us again how incredibly helpful it is to travel with one backpack. This literally made it possible for us to cover this whole stint which would at least take 50 minutes according to the airline staff in less than 20 minutes.

Curious if you guys have similar stories like this. For me in the end it was such a fun story to share, but at the time it was NOT fun at all...

Edit: to add something funny I forgot to mention

We actually paid the taxi driver 4x his daily salary and he absolutely nailed it with the car going through all the traffic with illegal overtakes, different route etc haha. When I gave him the money I said to my girlfriend: this will be so worth it if we actually make it because of him but a waste if we don't. We did make it mostly because of him and saved us 1000-2000 Euro's

Edit 2: since many people wondering what the backpacks and cubes are:

My backpack is the Pakt Cero 35L. My girlfriend has the Park One travel backpack 35L. Both amazing backpacks. Mine weighs just over one kg or 2lbs.

The cubes are from Peak design and the camera cube is from Pgytech. It came with their first onemo backpack but I bought it separately used for about 20-30.

Packing List Flair is the most restrictive airline in Canada for carry-on but the Osprey Arcane fits as a personal item

Long weekend trip with a small dop kit, two T-shirts, a sweater and a packable down jacket (plus underwear, socks and a pair of light sweatpants).

Oh and an E-reader.

As long as you don't have any luggage (and sometimes even if you do) Flair is the cheapest way to fly inside of Canada.

Seeking Recommendations Looking for recommendations

Hi all. Last year I went on a 10 month solo trip through Southeast Asia. I didn't truly one bag, because I'm having the issue of my clothes not fitting. I'm a photographer/ videographer, so I carry cameras and gear, which limits my space significantly. Also, I carry my motorcycle helmet inside my bag during bus and train journeys.

Ideally, I want to be able to fit all of my gear into my 80L Simond waterproof duffel bag, which I found works the best for what I do. I typically carry everything in the 80L bag, and inside I keep a 40L bag for the short trips I go on. I typically have two hotel rooms so that I don't need to carry everything on overnight motorcycle excursions.

My major issue is that I am a very large man, 6'4" 260lbs (193cm 118kg) 31 years old. I also need to carry clothes for both hot and cold weather, because I change elevation so much.

My question is this: what clothes for big people will take up less space when packed? Ideally, I carry 4 shirts, sweatshirt, jacket, merino base layer,2 pants, 2 shorts, 4 socks, 4 underwear. Many people will say I have two many pants, but I need to be able to change out of wet muddy clothes into dry clean ones after motorcycle rides/ hiking.

I will take any recommendations, especially critical ones. thank you everyone.

Packing List What should I cut

Post image

I'm spending 3 night with friends for academic events on 2 consecutive days in which smart casual is expected. I run fairly cold, but I was wondering if there's anything I can cut from this set up. everything fits inside 2 small packing cube aside from shoes. The trip is in the UK and I will fly there if it's relevant.

Hey everyone!

I'm going to Japan & Korea for 3 weeks and as I was packing, I realized I don't need my carry-on. So I decided to ditch it and only travel with my newly acquired Osprey Talon 11 VSN.

The trip will be mostly cities, with some hiking, running, and photography. Trying to keep things minimal without giving up too much comfort. I'll be doing laundry along the way.

I'm planning to buy a Montbell Plasma 1000 down jacket in Japan, which should complete the kit for cold weather.

Here's the packing list!

Bags & organization

  • Osprey Talon 11L
  • Patagonia Ultralight Black Hole Mini Hip Pack 1L
  • 2× Bellroy packing cubes
  • Small organizer pouches
  • Knirps ultralight slim umbrella
  • Sleep mask

Clothing

  • 4× Uniqlo U AIRism oversized T-shirts
  • 2× Technical T-shirt (for running)
  • 1× Cashmere sweater
  • 1× Patagonia Torrentshell 3L rain jacket
  • 2× Uniqlo Pleated Wide Trousers
  • 1× Lululemon Pace Breaker 7" running shorts
  • 6× Uniqlo AIRism boxer briefs
  • 6× Pairs of socks
  • 1× Beanie
  • 1x Merino buff

Shoes & accessories

  • Nike Pegasus 41 all black (worn)
  • Capote C396 sunglasses
  • Garmin Fenix 6

Tech & camera

  • DJI Osmo Pocket 4P + accessories
  • Nitecore 10k power bank
  • Samsung T7 Shield SSD
  • USB-C hub
  • 65W GaN charger
  • Universal travel adapter
  • 2× USB-C cables
  • Apple AirPods

Toiletries & medical

  • Philips OneBlade
  • Toothbrush + travel cover
  • Toothpaste
  • Nuud deodorant
  • Basic medication
  • 2× Jext epinephrine auto-injectors (nuts allergies)
  • Ventolin inhaler (nuts allergies)

Documents & everyday carry

  • Passport
  • Slim cardholder with cash
  • Phone
  • Travel documents

Friends told me I'm crazy, and I will want to bring stuff back from the trip.

We'll see! Worst case, I'll just grab a cheap extra bag or suitcase before flying home.

Packing List 3 week trip to Vietnam

Hi everyone,

I am excited that I could finally share my one-bag shots and packing list. It is my first time traveling with one bag and going to Vietnam. I have been studying your posts for some time now. I didn't really buy much new for this other than the backpack, packing cubes, and poncho.

Destination: Hanoi, Ha Giang, Hue, Da Nang

Mode of transportation: Public transportation, domestic flight, grab?

Accommodation: Homestays, Airbnb

Packing List

Clothes and shoes

  • Underwear x2
  • Bra x2
  • Tanktops x2
  • Socks x2
  • Skirt
  • Pants
  • Long-sleeve shirt
  • Sweater
  • Swimsuit
  • Towel
  • Sandals

Other things

  • Light daypack
  • Binoculars
  • Contact lens and solution
  • Tooth paste
  • Pen
  • Adaptors
  • Water bottle
  • Poncho
  • Water filter and bag
  • Water floss
  • Shopping bag
  • Makeup removing cloth
  • Landry line
  • Malaria vaccine
  • Antibiotics
  • Ibuprofen and OTC

Pouch

  • Passport
  • Cards
  • Wire headset
  • WIreless headset
  • Nail clipper
  • Small screwdriver
  • Chapstick

Items not in the picture

  • Liquid foundation
  • Cheek stick
  • Eye shadows
  • Tooth brush
  • Charging block and USB-C and Lightning

It is now about 5.5kg or so. I am not fashionable, and I plan to do laundry every other day. Here are some questions.

  • Pouch: I use this pouch every day, and it is handy. But I wonder if I am better off just carrying things in my pocket. It is extra weight.
  • Sandals: They are pretty heavy. I am not going to buy a new one for this trip, but what are your favorite lightweight sandals? Since it will be raining every day over there, I figure I should pack some sandals.
  • Meds: I took the oral vaccine for typhoid and finished the course. I still have to take the one for malaria throughout the trip. I got antibiotics prescribed just in case. I'm also taking ibuprofen and another OTC just in case. That's a lot of meds.
  • Poncho: Anyone traveled to Vietnam or another SEA with a poncho? I figured I needed something to cover, but it looks hot there. Is it going to be miserable?

I appreciate your feedback!

Discussion One bag travel - coming full circle

Hi all,

Just wanted to share the experience when one bag travel comes full circle.

A decade ago I went to a two weeks faimly trip, and we bought flight tickets with cary on size luggages only, and at the time I was a pretty avarager packer (if that's a thing) that struggles to pack everything to carry on luggage wihtout overpack it, and while I did manage to fit everything in the end, that made me stressed and the whole flying experience pretty bad.
Fortunately, this experience made me want to become more minimalist and eventually made me discover the one bag travel style.

Pass forward to nowdays, and we had another family trip which was three weeks instead of two, and from someone who sturggles with packing to a miminalist that took his 30L backpack - the whole experience was totally different.

TSA was a breeze, having my trusty bag under the seat and having the flexibility to simply explore without dragging a luggage or a big travel bag is such a great experience!

It is not the first time I do one bag travel (made a post about it), but having similar settings with better experience made one bag travel come full circle.

So yea, just wanted to share :)

What about you guys? Do you have same or simillar experience?
