r/officechairs is under attack by spam artists. How we go after them next is going to be partly up to you.

Very good epp in last weeks WSJ podcast about Reddit subs and the prevalence of brands spamming subs as a way to sneak brand content into LLMs.

https://www.wsj.com/podcasts/the-journal/ai-loves-reddit-but-redditors-arent-so-sure/5695c5e0-5ee6-41e6-97fa-ac04fde0c5f4

It's happening here and we are not controlling it as well as we would like to.

Years ago it was Autonomous, we banned them for a while, engaged with them and they have been respectful of the community standards for years now.  Some brands participate here with this sub while also being respectful of the rediqute and the rules, think Steelcase, Anthros or Musso.

Now, it feels like we see quite a bit of content about Libornovo, Secretlab and ProtoArc.  Regularly, multiple accounts and posts, but similar kinds of content being inserted into the sub.

This raises questions to me.  Our r/officechairs team has been leading this sub for about 6 years.  This last 2 years, the amount of slop / promotional content has been off the charts.

When we stated moding here, u/classroom and u/cranda58 and I were able to keep up with the spam and the self promotion to a minimum. Now even with more people on the team plus the auto-mod functionality, we are just not able to keep up with it all.

Today, spammers have become very sophisticated.  It's much harder to see what is bot / spam content and its both very cheap and potentially very profitable for them to attack this sub with their slop of nonsense.

What are brands you notice that seem to be over represented here lately?

How aggressive do you want this sub to be moderated?

There were 800 posts and 6300 comments in the last 30 days.  Normally, the mod team will not see all of the posts and only a small fraction of comments, so if your goal is to slip some slop into the LLMs, it can be done quietly.

The nuclear option would be for us to require new posts to be affirmatively approved by a mod before they hit the sub.  One of us would really see if there were 50 Libornova posts every week and act accordingly.  It would be a more curated sub but it would also be more resistant to marketers efforts.  A less aggressive option would be to use mod tools to pause mentions of those brands that we suspect are being the most aggressive lately while engaging them to make sure their future communications here are within the bounds.

If you want to see what un-moderated looks like, my social experiment r/officechairsIsell is based on the idea that if you give folks the ability to post whatever they want, a chairs sub will become garbage.

Its our sub to use so please, what do you, the subscribers want to see us doing about this problem that is impacting the quality of what we have here?

Couldn’t decide between the Aeron and Leap V2, so I bought both

Been deep in this sub comparing the Herman Miller Aeron and Steelcase Leap V2. There are some strong opinions on both, and nowhere near me to try them side by side.

Then the stars aligned and I found both on Facebook Marketplace listed for $425 each. Negotiated the Aeron down to $360 and the Leap V2 to $350.

The plan is to test them both out, keep whichever works better for me, and sell the other. I feel like I bought them at good enough prices to recoup my money, maybe even make a small profit.

If you used either, or both, which one do you guys prefer?

I have had a Secretlab chair for about three years, but it is very hard, and the armrests are rigid, making my arms and back hurt. I put a seat cushion on the seat it helped some but not alot. Recently, I was looking into a different chair; I have always had my eye on the Logitech Embody, but I cannot bring myself to pay that much for a chair. I know it has a warranty and such, but it is too much. So, I have been watching Facebook Marketplace, as it always seems people find really good deals on used ones, but I could not find anything after months of looking. In the meantime, I have researched different chairs like the Leap V2, Gesture, and other Herman Millers. This morning, when I got to work, I decided to look at Marketplace, and bam, I saw a post about an ultra-comfortable chair, but I recognized it as the Steelcase Leap V2 for 100 dollars. I met in person; everything seems to be in good condition, all the levers work as intended, and the cylinder does not have any issues. There are some small marks on the armrests, but they move as they are supposed to, and there is a small paint spot on the seat, but you cannot really see it. It feels very comfortable; it will take some time to dial in the settings, but so far I like it. The only issue is the seat fabric feels hot after a little time. I have not taken any pictures of it at my desk yet as I had to get home and hsve been busy, but here is the post with the pictures. I will put home pictures in the comments tomorrow.

Need a Chair recommendation (i am 110kg heavy, and 193cm tall)

Hello everyone,

I am in desperate need for a new office chair that doesnt explode my wallet.

I am 193cm tall (around 6'4") and 110kg heavy (around 243lb, trying to lose 10kg/23lb)

My current chair is an old secretlab gaming chair i bought when i didn't think about ergonomics yet and now it backfired, because i am getting heavy sciatic pain from sitting on it. Pillows for relieve didn't help, so i'll need a new one.

My current budget is around 500€. Which chair would you recommend for my size? (I am from Germany if thats important).

Thanks for the help!

Do you use your chair more for work or gaming?

Hey everyone, I'm trying to pick a chair and can't even decide what "kind" I want. I've ruled out gaming chairs, but do I get an ergonomic chair I can really lean back and relax in, or something more geared toward working at a desk? Basically, I'm torn between something like the Libernovo Maxis for reclining and getting comfortable, and the Herman Miller Aeron for sitting more upright.

I work from home, so of course I'm telling myself this is a work purchase. My iPad was also a work purchase. It now gets used almost exclusively for watching shows. I know myself well enough to have some doubts here. What do you mostly use your chair for at home? Does it get much use once you're done working?

This picture was taken at the Orgatec Furniture trade show today in Germany. Unfortunately, I couldn’t make it this year.

There are a ton of similarities to the Libernovo Omni.

I reached out to Libernovo to see if they are working with them on it.

Thoughts on the design? What do you wish the Libernovo did that maybe this fixes. Seat slider?

Hoping to have a video to share tomorrow.

LeapV2 is sadly VERY uncomfortable. Appreciate any ideas.

Post image

Hi! I recently bought a used LeapV2 from Madison Seating.

I REALLY wanted to love this chair, but it's pretty painful. I've been sitting on it for a little over a week now. My budget is 1k USD.

I am 5'10" and 180lbs male, so I figure the seat should fit me. I sit it in 8+ hours a day.

Issues:

  • My lower back hurts, and there's irritation/redness almost like a mild friction burn. from searching here, it might be the lumbar support?
  • My butt hurts and goes numb after 30 mins
  • My neck hurts
  • The chair seat is a bit contoured which feels a bit uncomfortable.
  • Chair runs hot, but I'm ok with a fan.

Admittedly, my posture is bad. I lean forward toward my monitor instead of resting against the backrest. I also slouch, causing my lower back to sink into the gap between the seat and backrest. Am working to fight these bad habits.

I'm considering a few things:

  • Removing the lumbar support (hoping I can put it back before returning)
  • Getting a small cushion or aftermarket replacement
  • Returning it for a herman miller Celle (I used it a few years ago in an office). I have 1 week to return the chair.
  • Returning it for a Series 1, I also used it in an office, although it felt a tad cramped.
  • Any other ideas :) ?

For reference, here's the chair I used before the leap v2 and was comfortable. It has has an after-market cushion and after-market lumbar pillow.

I used this before the Leapv2. It was a cheap chair and I put after-market cushions on it, both seat and back.

Appreciate any guidance, thanks!!

Best ergonomic office chair for $600–$1,000? Dreaming of a Herman Miller

I recently started a new job and was given a $600 stipend to spend on anything that would improve my home office setup.
I’ve decided that investing in a quality ergonomic office chair is probably the best use of the money since I work from home and spend a significant amount of time sitting at my desk. I’ve always wanted a Herman Miller, but I know a brand-new one is outside my budget. I’m willing to contribute an additional $400 of my own money, bringing my maximum budget to $1,000. I’m open to refurbished or used chairs, as well as other brands that offer comparable comfort, ergonomics, and durability.

With Black Friday coming up next month, I’m also wondering whether I should hold off on purchasing. Do Herman Miller, Steelcase, or reputable refurbished chair retailers typically offer worthwhile Black Friday discounts? Would waiting potentially get me a better chair within my budget?

A few questions:
• Is a used/refurbished Herman Miller Aeron or Embody worth considering at this price point?
• Are there other chairs you’d recommend over Herman Miller in this budget?
• Is it worth spending the full $1,000, or are there excellent options closer to $600?
• Should I wait until Black Friday, or are the discounts generally not significant enough to justify waiting?
• Are there any reputable retailers you’d recommend for refurbished premium office chairs?

For context, I’m approximately 5’4”–5’5” and spend around 8+ hours a day working at my desk. I’d love something comfortable, supportive, and built to last. I’m willing to invest in quality, but I also want to make sure I’m getting the best value for my money. Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

Chair advice - €400–600 budget, 185 cm / 79 kg, based in Germany

Hey everyone,

Im looking for an ergonomic chair for my desk setup and would appreciate some advice.

My details:

  • Height: 185 cm (about 6'1")
  • Weight: 79 kg (174 lbs)
  • Location: Berlin, Germany
  • Budget: €400–600, with €600 being my maximum
  • Happy to buy used or refurbished, as long as its in good condition

Im leaning toward Herman Miller, particularly the Mirra 2 or Aeron Classic, but Im open to alternatives from steelcase or other brands if they offer better value or fit.
Id also appreciate recommendations for places in Berlin where I can try these chairs, or reliable refurbished sellers that ship to Germany. Thank you.

Recommendations needed, first high-end chair purchase (used)

I am looking to purchase my first higher-end chair on FB Marketplace and would appreciate any recommendations or guidance, since it sounds like all the available options are great, each with its own advantages. I am looking to spend around $350, give or take $50. Currently, the barely used options under $250 are:

Steelcase - Series 1 and 2, Think V1 & V2, Leap V1 and V2, Silq, Amnia, and some heavier-used Gesture chairs.Herman Miller - various Aerons, Sayl, Lino, Celle (more used), and Mirra 1, 2

Haworth - Zody, or Knoll Generation, or splurge on a Haworth Fern or Libranova since I am into the high-back look of those models

Some Humanscale and Steelmade are around as well.

I may be missing a few, but I live in a larger city, so most brands and models are available. Please feel free to recommend something not listed.

I am making this purchase because I work from home, spend long hours sitting, and want something that reclines and is comfortable for lounging. I also have lower back and hip pain, so I need something that reclines and is easy to lounge on. Adjustable seat depth and a headrest are a huge plus but not a must.

My lower back and hip pain is getting worse, which is why I'm reaching out. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, I also don't have much natural cushioning, so I am typically sitting on my bones. That said, anything that helps would be a big plus.

So uh I’m looking for Office chair recommendations for around 800-100€?

Right now what I’ve found is the Steelcase Amia since it’s apparently good and also has good warranty?

Any more suggestions? I have never bought an office chair before)

(I’m 180cm and not that heavy)

How does Omni SE compares to Mirra 2

Simple question to anyone who sat in both of them. I currently sitting in mirra 2 but have a chance to return it and thinking of getting the other one. A few things bother me though - lots of issues with the cushion is the main one, especially the fact that it has hard bottom

Ergonimic chair for a heavy guy with big thigs. Mirra 2 narrow "bucket" feel.

I have big legs. Years of heavy squats. I also have a bad back after years of gaming/working on a worn out Ikea Markus.

I am 95-100kg and 177cm tall. Not fat, just solid.

I was able to get a mirra 2 very cheap recently, but it is to narrow for my legs. I feel like my thighs are getting pushed together, and longs sessions makes the side of my thighs numb and it just feels too constrained. My but also hits the "back" of the plastic rim ( under the seat) when i recline.
I however love the cooling of the mesh, the backrest and the tilt function of the mirra 2. Also find the warranty and build quality HM are known for appealing.

It was a perfect fit for my wife, but i am on the lookout for something new.

I tried an embody, but hated the backrest and back support in the short time i tried it. I have seen the Aeron remastered C and leap/gesture reccomended to more bulky guys, but I have no way of trying theese, so i would be buying "blind".

My question is, does the Aeron remastered in C have the same "bucket" feel, where your legs will be pushed together, or is it a more "flat" feel in the seat?

I could get an aeron remastered C refusbushed or leap v2 at quite similar prices.

Any tips/experience from others with similar challenges.

I need a chair that feels like heaven on my butt

I WFH and game after so am sitting on a chair most of my day. I have a standing desk which I alternate between sitting and standing. I don't really care for any ergo stuff. I just want a very comfortable chair that's super soft on my ass. I workout and am physically very fit so ergo is not an issue for me. I am 5'8 170lbs if that matters. The only thing I care about it is how soft and comfortable it is to sit on. Please recommend me any chairs that will satisfy my needs.

Best Uline chair regardless of price

My work is letting me pick anything from the uline website. If price wasnt a factor, what would be the best choice? Im leaning toward a mesh chair for better posture support. Open to suggestions. Thanks!

Can anyone tell me the model # or name. I know it’s a sit Martin but I’m lost on learning how to work it. It was gifted from my uncle as we both work office jobs and he just got a new chair

Recommendations

I am a fit 45 yo guy who works from home. I’ve always had a cheap chair but my back is starting to have a say and is screaming for more support. Questions:

  1. Any recommendation for a chair in the $300-$400 range that has helped support back and butt?

  2. Anyone have success getting work to pay for it? My work doesn’t have an ergonomics program but does offer a small home office stipend. The stipend covers phone and internet but not enough left over. Anyone have a successful strategy to force employers hand?
