What are some books, websites, question papers for a person wanting to study university level of nuclear studies without being in one?
Hi I am a 20M and I've always found nuclear studies to be really fascinating ever since I was a kid and I've finished highschool sometime ago and now I would be in some university but unfortunately due to some financial reasons I haven't been able to get in one and wouldn't be able to be in one for some time until I gather enough money for it. But during this time I don't want to remain idle and do just part-time jobs, I want to maybe try learning whatever I can from the net if I can do so.
Maybe some online question papers I can study or some site or place where I can educate myself more as it's my dream to be a nuclear engineer and I know it's not an easy job which is why I want to learn as much as possible without wasting time by being idle even if I'm not in a university rn. So I'd be glad to get any help or guidance on where should I look and stuff. If for books, id prefer if I could find an online copy as I said I'm in a bit of a financial crisis, but if it is really required then I can try to buy. Thanks

Nuclear Science & Engineering Network [NSEN]
Hi everyone,
I've been working on a project called NSEN (Nuclear Science & Engineering Network), a Discord community aimed at bringing together people interested in nuclear science and engineering across different disciplines.
The idea came from looking for Discord communities dedicated to nuclear science and engineering. I found older Reddit posts about various servers, but their invitation links were no longer valid. From what I could find, there didn't seem to be an active community bringing together the different fields of nuclear science and engineering, so I decided to create one myself.
The idea behind NSEN is to give people a place to exchange knowledge, discuss technical questions, and explore different areas of the field. I'd like it to be a place where people can share ideas and learn from one another, with room for both newcomers and those with extensive experience in the field.
The community is still growing, and I'd like to develop it alongside the people who join and contribute to its discussions. It also includes automated nuclear news feeds and dedicated spaces for research, education, and technical discussions.
I'd be interested to hear what you think about the idea, or what you'd like to see in a community dedicated to nuclear science and engineering.
If you'd like to take a look, here's the invitation: https://discord.gg/gADF2TsZAv

The Navy is putting a 70-ton reactor that ships in a 35-foot container and runs five years on one load of fuel on an Indiana weapons base, its first power reactor on land since Antarctica, and the only one built is still inside an Idaho test dome

Simulation of a Person Standing Next to an Old Spent Nuclear Fuel Assembly
I used a custom Monte-Carlo simulator to simulate the impact that standing 1m away from a spent nuclear fuel assembly would have after varied cooling durations. Been working on and off this for a while just for fun and finally got around to finishing it.
I only considered primary gamma (accounting for the branching ratios of gamma emissions and the and how gamma energy affects penetration) and Compton scattering radiation (so excluding alpha, beta, braking radiation and elastic scattering). I used the composition and dimensions/mass of a well analysed spent fuel assembly and used a differential equation solver to age/de-age the fuel according to decay chains. I also compared a fresh fuel assembly to demonstrate that after very long cooling durations, the U-234 to radium decay chain becomes the dominant source of gamma radiation. (U-234 is produced by U-238 decay (alpha-beta-beta) and is concentrated during enrichment).
Disclaimer: While I spent several months on and off gathering the data and writing the python, I did use ai to help finish off the project, especially for bug fixing, fine-tuning the presentation of the graph, and some of the more complex parts of the simulation.

OPG firm joins UK BWRX-300 project
The UK-based project company of European SMR developer and investor SGE, and Origin Nuclear, a subsidiary of Ontario Power Generation, have signed a letter of intent to establish a joint venture for the future operation of a planned fleet of 14 BWRX-300 small modular reactors.

Damaged nuclear fuel assembly removed from Palisades reactor
This post from homestate media Mlive is much more encouraging or should I say less dramatic than the post I asked this community about when the rod fell. That previous article made it seem like we were about to have a catastrophic melt down. This article basically says the dropped rod was recovered, everything went well, and fuel loading will resume soon. Always interested to hear from this community as I don't know much about nuclear energy.
For those following, this is the Palisades reactor on Michigan's west coast (two hours from Chicago). This reactor was bought by Holtec from Entergy and was to be decommissioned. But with a $1.5B loan from the US Govt, they're planning on restarting it. Original restart was planned for 2025 so should be close with this hurdle out of the way.
