That gasp is her inhaling irreparable lung damage.

390

u/HillDrag0n Apr 09 '21

in the uncut video they immediately coughs after the gasp

511

u/ToastPaintsMinis Apr 09 '21

Idk, if its the real uncut version the battery wouldn't explode.

197

u/Lizzy123442 Apr 09 '21

have you ever stabbed a battery? explosions are exactly what would happen. source: i am a clumsy apple repair tech for an AASP

377

u/ToastPaintsMinis Apr 09 '21

If the battery was uncut, it wouldn't explode. Its a joke per say. A play on words perhaps....

-20

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '21

You are exactly how I picture most apple "geniuses".

4

u/Bruce_Darse Apr 10 '21

I got it but couldn’t help laugh more at the response

6

u/Itsmydouginabox Apr 10 '21

This is top tier and I am sad that more people didn't get it.

-6

u/slawdogutk Apr 09 '21

Yes, yes it would

8

u/therock21 Apr 10 '21

In the uncut version the battery is never cut

u/greenking2000 Apr 10 '21

A lot of people on Reddit speak English as a second language so it makes sense

7

u/Mouth662 Apr 10 '21

I hear the Snyder cut will really fix all the continuity issues

27

u/chriswrightmusic Apr 09 '21

What is in there that causes such?

53

u/XDDDSOFUNNEH Apr 09 '21

My uneducated guess would be some sort of ions like lithium or whatever that go boom boom when they come into contact with oxygen.

67

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '21

Yes Li ions in the battery react with O2 in the air to form Li2O which is exothermic and reacts violently.

62

u/MrStatue Apr 10 '21

I thought lions were already violent? Good to know that battery lions are only violent when exposed to air.

12

u/redditforgotaboutme Apr 10 '21

TIL don't cut a lion.

1

u/landonburner Apr 19 '21

Stop getting all technical, I'll go with the last guys answer. You know... because things do stuff

25

u/jeweliegb Apr 10 '21

be some sort of ions

Yes, explos-ions.

6

u/XDDDSOFUNNEH Apr 10 '21

Daaaaaad, get off reddit!

30

u/Othersideofthemirror Apr 10 '21

Here's the "ingredient" list on a Honeywell battery and health warnings.

https://www.analog.com/media/en/technical-documentation/application-notes/hdr202li_hd220rli_battery_msds.pdf

Lithium is a nasty one. Builds up fluid in lungs even if you think you are fine you need to head to A&E

19

u/chriswrightmusic Apr 10 '21

Dang. I am an EMT, and would hate to respond to that.

14

u/Zaddy5150 Apr 10 '21

Bravo has better DIY first aid shows than A&E, I'd turn to that channel first if it was a serious injury

2

u/TrontRaznik Apr 10 '21

Why would watching A&E help? They've had like 3 good shows and two of them take place in the Breaking Bad universe.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '21

Lithium+hydrogen gas. The lithium reacts with air in a violently exothermic reaction. This release of heat ignites the built up hydrogen gas in the battery, causing a very violent exothermic reaction

3

u/Mitrovarr Apr 29 '21

The lithium metal is very flammable, but the reason it's so immediately energetic is that you're short circuiting a VERY powerful battery. Most of the electricity that could run that phone for hours is converted to heat in seconds, so that's a lot of heat. And what is there to burn nearby... why, it's all that lithium! So you have a metal fire.

1

u/jeweliegb Apr 10 '21

'Splosions

1

u/Styrak Apr 10 '21

Lithium. Because it's a lithium battery.

81

u/dodo8338 Apr 09 '21

That scared me!

11

u/SarahQuinn113 Apr 09 '21

Dude same!

5

u/Mas_Zeta Apr 10 '21

I threw my phone in the air.

Jesus Christ, I almost die of a heart attack

2

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '21

But did you die?

1

u/All_Over_Again_ Apr 21 '21

Sadly yes...

4

u/cypdub Apr 09 '21

I absolutely gicked myself when it exploded 😂

100

u/Ensvey Apr 09 '21

14

u/dpak_hk Apr 10 '21

What a super specific sub lol

130

u/PheterPharker Apr 09 '21

If they had watched any video online of a battery being punctured, they would have realized that this was not the brightest idea.

59

u/bit-groin Apr 09 '21

Outcome was quite bright tho

6

u/badDNA Apr 09 '21

Took my breath away.

3

u/InterPunct Apr 10 '21

Blinded by the light

26

u/dalego25 Apr 09 '21

She actually says “It doesn’t look like the battery exploded or anything” and then proceeded to do this... whyyyy?????

9

u/Randy-Marsh24 Apr 09 '21

Idk, it seemed pretty bright to me

-1

u/someotherguyinNH Apr 09 '21

Why does it explode like that? Im fairly mechanically inclined and wouldn't expect that. I wouldn't to do it in the first place though.....

23

u/tylerchu Apr 09 '21

This isn’t mechanics, it’s chemistry. The short story is that hydrogen gas forms and the heat of formation also ignited it.

12

u/WhySpongebobWhy Apr 10 '21

Lithium Ion battery. The Lithium reacted to the oxygen in the air once the seal was punctured and had an exothermic reaction. A swift one.

41

u/Moohcow Apr 09 '21

Superbrain

18

u/iHateMonkeysSObad Apr 09 '21

Christ, I just jumped at that ending so hard my knees smashed into the bottom of my desk.

1

u/staytrue1985 Apr 09 '21

Oh boy. The things I've seen on the internet.

10

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '21

Perfection, well done. Now do a bigger battery

8

u/umamifiend Apr 09 '21

But seriously- WHYYY? is this just another stupid think kids are doing for videos? I just completely do not understand. But I melt metal safely all the time (casting) so I guess I am ahead of the curve?

6

u/HorseL3gs97 Apr 09 '21

Read the title and thought "ooh don't they blow up?" - was not disappointed.

4

u/srbrega Apr 09 '21

She released the genie.

5

u/Modified_Human Apr 09 '21

Why is she opening it like if it was a pack of pokemon cards

8

u/Teripid Apr 09 '21

You stab your pokemon cards?

4

u/indianapale Apr 09 '21

Yeah but not with a knife.

2

u/fdecarranza Apr 25 '21

Why would you fckin do that?

2

u/blacksmithingbro May 29 '21

How likely is it she just burned her house down!?

0

u/[deleted] May 29 '21

1

u/blacksmithingbro May 29 '21

Lol my wifes exact reaction. Nice to see your still active brother. Miss you in *******

0

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '25

2

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '21

Ended too soon

3

u/namebnb3 Apr 09 '21

the label's got nothing on this idiot

3

u/Nurum Apr 09 '21

"It doesn't look like the battery exploded"

Proceeds to cut into said battery. Does she not know what makes them explode?

u/Ensvey Apr 09 '21

36

u/maximum_powerblast Apr 10 '21

spicypillows

Fuck lol

25

u/badnewsbeers86 Apr 09 '21

And then?????

2

u/FirstMiddleLass Apr 10 '21

Interesting, the few cell phone battery I've pierced went off like a few dozen sparklers.

41

u/Quasic Apr 10 '21

I, for one, love this new trend of ending a video immediately after or during the action of a video. Who needs context? I want to slightly smirk and instantly start another video.

-38

u/mesopotamius Apr 09 '21

What do you mean "too early"? Is there a correct time to be puncturing a lithium-ion battery?

75

u/OpsadaHeroj Apr 09 '21

The video cut out too early, they mean. But I would say around 12pm is the best time. All the firefighters are awake and ready, everyone else is chilling eating lunch so hopefully not much workload for those guys.

14

u/Muffinbeans Apr 09 '21

Maybe 12:45pm so the firefighters can eat lunch too. Can’t save people from themselves on an empty stomach.

4

u/Somethingclever24 Apr 10 '21

Damn. I miss the days when you could misread a comment, have said comment explained to you, and not get downvoted to hell.

3

u/mesopotamius Apr 10 '21

I thought I was making a funny but the redditors have spoken

0

u/ivanoski-007 Apr 10 '21

that's what reposters do, edit the video so it looks like original content

0

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '21

25

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '21

Awkwardly hold knife and cut down to other hand... good form

2

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '21

Competent enough to remove the display assembly from a modern iphone but dumb enough to stab the battery with metal? This smells like stage to me.

3

u/WhySpongebobWhy Apr 10 '21

If it was staged it would still be ridiculously stupid. No gloves, no mask, no proper ventilation, on a flammable surface. Lithium gas is RIDICULOUSLY harmful to inhale and she inhaled REAL deep when it exploded.

1

u/Educational_Check340 Dec 21 '22

It's not the lithium "gas" that's harmful. It almost immediately turns into an oxide, and there's very little lithium to begin with. It's the electrolyte violently decomposing into HF, among other things. That is the dangerous part of burning batteries.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '21

I knew it was gonna happen and still I got startled dammit

2

u/ChemicallyCastrated Apr 10 '21

Why do people keep cutting VIDEOS like that?

2

u/slingshot91 Apr 09 '21

“It doesn’t look like battery actually exploded or anything....” Famous last words.

2

u/_axeman_ Apr 09 '21

This reminds me of a story my brother told me. One of his co workers had to rush to the hospital from work because her kids and the neighbors kids got injured opening ammunition....with a hammer. Sigh.

1

u/indianapale Apr 09 '21

Is your brothers name John?

1

u/Breaddiddley Apr 10 '21

My brother got grazed throwing .22 at powerlines

1

u/_axeman_ Apr 10 '21

Bless his heart

1

u/restingwitchface22 Apr 18 '21

Jeez, haven’t startled like that in years!

1

u/Chemical_Magician13 Apr 18 '21

And I thought I was stupid

1

u/F_for_Respect_69 Apr 19 '21

Actually scared me

1

u/moimoisauna Apr 20 '21

This deserves to be in r/WinStupidPrizes

1

u/downtune79 Apr 25 '21

That made me jump, ngl

1

u/Dommyblox Apr 27 '21

do not cut it.

BOOM!!!!

1

u/sikjoven Jun 26 '21

People today are so stupid

1

u/OneBoxy Sep 12 '21

cutting towards yourself + cutting battery = death

1

u/WoobyWiott Apr 09 '21

Nothing to see here. Just natural selection doing its job.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '21

Idiot. I had a rechargeable iPad keyboard expand on me while I was on a road trip. I didn’t take it apart to exam it let alone cut into the damn thing. I properly disposed of it as soon as I could before it had a chance to potentially combust in my car or hotel room.

1

u/Niskara Apr 10 '21

I was expecting it, but it STILL got me

1

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '21

We drive nails in our bad lipo's at the rc racing track you got a couple of seconds after penetration to GTFO of there

1

u/indianapale Apr 09 '21

Damn how long are your nails?

1

u/p1um5mu991er Apr 09 '21

Might need to update

1

u/JimGerm Apr 09 '21

Magic smoke is getting more potent.

1

u/CreeMcCreeCreeinton Apr 09 '21

Your nails aren’t the only thing black now

1

u/willem640 Apr 09 '21

But why do it inside?????

1

u/Fortyplusfour Apr 09 '21

Knew it was coming and flinched still. Absolutely stupid.

1

u/bikebrooklynn Apr 09 '21

Where the rest of the video?!?! People always cut out the best parts.

1

u/Keksis_The_Betrayed Apr 09 '21

I couldn’t imagine being this braindead

1

u/Jetblast787 Apr 09 '21

Haven't cringed so hard in a looooong time

1

u/CapN_Crummp Apr 10 '21

I was bracing myself. Slightly turning my head away and I still flinched lol

1

u/Jack_of_Hearts20 Apr 10 '21

Some people really don't have any common sense

1

u/humbled91 Apr 10 '21

I had to watch with one eye open and the phone at arm's length. The anxiety when she put the blade to it went through the roof. So stupid 😂

1

u/Blaustein23 Apr 10 '21

Idk if I'm in the minority of people being that I've seen what thermal runaway on a LiPO battery looks like in person, but holy fuck it's terrifying and you want to do something about it, but energy gonna do what energy do

1

u/oakum_ouroboros Apr 10 '21

Well that certainly carried me over the finish line in this morning's toileting event.

1

u/GenghisKhamdy Apr 10 '21

Maybe they thought it was a cake

1

u/AreaLeftBlank Apr 10 '21

If only the knife had slipped and nearly cut her finger off because she was cutting it like an idiot, she could probably breathe normally the rest of her life.

1

u/Need_another_beer Apr 10 '21

“Cut towards your chums, not your thumbs!” -U/swampnuts

1

u/chokwitsyum Apr 10 '21

“When I” bitch that is not their video

1

u/evilpeanut40 Apr 10 '21

Cobalt bruv

1

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '21

I watch this from a 6ft away

1

u/Pepper_Grinder Apr 10 '21

I have that same knife, had it over 15 years. Don’t go anywhere (within the house) without it

1

u/bloodguard Apr 10 '21

And now they're going to have to cram another warning label on the battery.

Right under:

Potential for fire or burning. Do not disassemble, puncture, crush heat or burn.

...

No. For serious. This means you, dummy.

1

u/Theguywhousespaper Apr 10 '21

Just because, right

1

u/Jay794 Apr 10 '21

How some people survive after doing stupid shit like this amazes me. Like this is natural selection at its best

1

u/BeBah205 Apr 10 '21

But why though?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '21

Natural selection!

1

u/alexplex86 Apr 10 '21

Why did she do that? What was the goal here?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '21

Literally made me jump

1

u/magnateur Apr 10 '21

Yeah, lithium batteries dont like oxygen. Also your lungs dont like breathing in the products of the fire.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '21

lithium

1

u/WinkTexas Apr 10 '21 edited Apr 10 '21

Assault in battery.

1

u/Er4din Apr 10 '21

Is there anyone knowledgeable enough to explain to me why does the battery explode upon its casing being pierced? I am genuinely interested

1

u/VulgarDisplayofDerp Apr 18 '21

The gist of it is the cathode and anode (positive and negative) are separated by carefully designed layers which control the chemical reaction in the battery allowing it to be charged or discharged at a predictable rate.

When those layers are pierced, the chemical reactions happen at a runaway pace, generate heat, which hastens that pace even more and then eventually fire. If it's in a contained hard shell case, you also get a small explosion

1

u/WaycoKid1129 Apr 10 '21

Not in a garage, or outside, no, this person decided to do this on their bed. So many questions right now lol

1

u/antwlkr Apr 10 '21

I can smell this GIF

1

u/jimmayy5 Apr 10 '21

Knife skills are also lacking

1

u/jimmayy5 Apr 10 '21

Why cut towards yourself

1

u/kvaks Apr 10 '21

Serious question: What do people do with all their Li-ion batteries? I have a lot of them around the house: Phones, computers, vacuum cleaners, gardening tools, hardware tools, and probably a few more categories of devices. I don't really check their status all to often, except when I use them. Some I don't use for months at a time. Are all these batteries ticking timebombs and will burn my house down at some point?

2

u/VulgarDisplayofDerp Apr 18 '21

If they aren't puffed they're most likely safe.

A discharged lithium battery is rarely fully discharged, so it should still be treated carefully. Don't pierce them don't put them in a trash compactor etc... But the amount of potential fire hazard in a fully charged battery is higher than one in a discharged state.

As to how to get rid of them, check with your local staples or OfficeMax, they often offer recycling for rechargeables

1

u/Scorpy_Mjolnir Apr 10 '21

I take them to the local recycle center.

1

u/trjones2 Apr 10 '21

I jumped

0

u/Joonicks Apr 09 '21

Label is staring her right in the face: "Warning: Potential for fire or burning. Do not disassemble, puncture, crush, heat or burn."

I vote we change "Instagram generation" to "Darwin generation".

1

u/WhySpongebobWhy Apr 10 '21

People have been idiots for millennia. This is simply the most VISIBLY stupid generation.

I'm always reminded about Will Smith commenting on his son Jaden Smith's tweets where he said that at least when he was stupid as a kid it wasn't out there for the world to see.

There was an entire generation of kids where long darts were a relatively common yard game and kids kept getting injured after throwing them straight up in the air.

-1

u/SassyPerere Apr 10 '21

if the battery wasnt charged it wouldnt explode right?

0

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '21

2

u/VulgarDisplayofDerp Apr 18 '21

While it has never happened to me more than a few guys in my RC group have had their soft side Lipo (lithium polymer) batteries burn up on them after getting damaged while bashing.

The general consensus is if You're routinely running your vehicles with rough treatment, you should always recharge them on a cinder block, brick, cement patio, in a metal bucket, etc.

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '21

iPhones can't melt steel beams
