Lycee Francais
Can someone explain to me, from the beginning, what is going on with Lycee? We almost sent our daughter there 2 years ago but changed our minds when we felt like there was too much change happening with the program - changes we didn’t even understand. It just seemed like a big mess. Now there are lawsuits, FB pages, and a van on Claiborne with an electronic billboard all having to do with whatever is happening at Lycee. Would love to have a better understanding of the whole situation…?

The people downplaying the craziness and blaming old parents are the ones that are truly hurting the school. My guess is they are too bent on having their kids get that “free education”, even if it costs the kids their whole school experience. We took our kids out. What used to be a thriving school is now a crumbled bag of lies. The administration chose filling their pockets instead of supporting the children. I’ve witnessed teachers, parents and students crying and PLEADING at school meetings, only to get mocked and shut down.
Too many years without teachers. Too many years of false promises. Children receive ONE CHANCE to get an education, no one wants their child to be in a chronically dysfunctional school. Our children struggled when we left to catch up at our new school, even in, of all courses, FRENCH! Thankfully, they are back on track, but it’s credited to the new school.

All public charter schools are supposed to be “free education”, no?
We’re lucky Lycee is free in New Orleans. It’s a private school everywhere else.

u/SpiltMilkPhilosophy 19h ago
You’re still using that line??? Lol head in the sand, I see. Fact is, this NEW lycee is no longer part of the LF’s across the country. They had to change their name when they changed the curriculum.

u/MomsAgainstManBabies 16h ago
Was the NOLA lycee ever part of the other lycees? I thought they had always been separate. Also wasn’t their name changed because they expanded out of NOLA to Lafayette with the new Lafayette campus

Wow! You possess a mind that’s remarkably unburdened by the complexities of thought.

Worst place I have ever worked. I will say, at the start, that the problems seem to get worse as you move from the elementary school to the high school. Ultimately, there's the skeleton of a good school here, but the C-suite is awful. That was the reason behind the unionization attempt. Demands on teachers increased every year (to levels I have not seen in any other school have worked at or that friends have worked at), and often during the year as well, all while we were told that we wouldn't be given raises. Again. Meanwhile, the C-suite continued to get paid at increasing rates. At this point though, there's not a salary they could offer me to make me go back there until leadership changes.
The C-suite views your kids as two numbers: a test score and a dollar sign. They don't care about kids beyond that so they strip away so many things that can further enrich students' lives and instead insist on drilling and testing them into the ground. At one point, they even went into my gradebook and changed the grade of a student who had failed.
I could go on and on here, but I'll leave it at that for now. Avoid this place.

It’s so exhausting to keep reading people defend this school. Yes, the project was magnificent and even unique in the country. But this administration has been—and continues to be—abusive toward teachers. There are no other words for it. Intimidation, threats, harassment, inappropriate/offensive comments, sudden and unfair terminations (and when I say brutal, I mean : one day your kid has a teacher ; the next morning he's gone and you will never no what happened). Also misleading and insulting teacher evaluations with explicit instructions to grade them down.
The “superintendent” and his deputy (who, incidentally, has been barred from U.S. territory by a USCIS decision but still earns over $100,000 in taxpayer money every year) waged a campaign of intimidation against the teachers—at first to control them, and later to punish them for trying to unionize.
Can you imagine just how dire the situation was for teachers—most of whom were on visas—to try to unionize IN LOUISIANA? Yet 80% of the teachers voted in favor of the union.
I’m not talking about a few disgruntled employees, but literally dozens of former teachers who can attest to what I’m saying. You only have to look at the teacher turnover rate at the end of the 2024/2025 school year. And the fact that the administration planned months in advance to replace French teachers with teachers from Senegal and Cameroon—supposedly for the sake of diversity, when the truth is undoubtedly much more shocking than that (African visas are much more restricted than European visas).
Let me be very clear: continuing to support this administration means supporting the mistreatment of the teachers who stand before your children every day. When human beings and teachers try to draw your attention to the way they’re being treated, and you respond by saying it’s all the product of the "deranged minds" of "crazy parents", you’re taking the side of the abusers. Furthermore, these two individuals have worked to systematically sever all ties with French and Francophone partners and institutions (it’s worth noting that they are currently in litigation against the AEFE, the French government agency responsible for international educational partners). It baffles me that some people continue to justify and ignore so many problems (just look up the money they are spending on lawyers every year).

Sounds like you have a personal vendetta with these people that does not sound healthy… I don't care about the admin and with 80% of the staff being French not surprised they voted for a union look at what is going on right now in France with unions… It is a public school meant to serve children while getting the adults to do what is best for kids and based on all the published scores/data it is doing a damn good job. My kid is happy there and it works for my family. If it doesn't work for you or yours, I am sorry move on and put your kid in the school that works for YOUR FAMILY. But just leave my kids school alone. Thanks!

I get it. You feel defensive about the place cause your kids go there, and you want the best for them. You like the test scores, and, while the relentless focus on tests isn't an educational philosophy that I like, it's working for you and others.
But to write off the complaints about Lycee as the work of just a few deranged parents requires a certain willful ignorance. Parents have plenty of valid complaints, and it's not just them. There was plenty of retaliation after the unionization effort. Students have left in droves (and the ones I have in my new school uniformly express how happy they are to be out of Lycee's high school). This is also an admin that faced two different student walk-outs in protest a few years back. The student council was then disbanded for the following year by order of the admin. This is not normal.
Lycee has a rough reputation in the education sector in town because of things like this. My own admin has asked me questions like, What's going on over there" and "is Lycee gonna make it?"
Lycee is working for you and your kids. That's great! But that doesn't mean you shouldn't be asking for change cause Lycee could and should be better.

u/Useful-Giraffe-9859 4d ago edited 4d ago
If things are SOOO great at your new school, why are you still so worried and talking about Lycee. Honestly, if you are a teacher it just sounds like you are being unprofessional talking bad about another school and other educators with CHILDREN instead of teaching. I send my kid to school learn, not engage in gossip with unprofessional teachers. Again, I don't get why you have to put down on my kid’s school bc just because maybe you could not meet Lycee standards. You don't like Lycee everyone knows at this point, great but grow up and move the hell on and don’t think you need to tell me what I should be doing as a parent at my child’s school when it sounds like you could be doing a lot better at yours… Hundred of great kids and parents choose Lycee let them enjoy their damn school that their parents choose for them and stop the bullying behavior.
6
u/StardogLeBeau 4d ago
Yes, clearly I'm the one exhibiting bullying behavior by calling out awful admin and not that admin itself. Or, dare I say, the individual who just called me unprofessional, gossipy, and bad at my job (and has been critical of a number of other posts as well). Especially after I finished my last post by saying it's great that Lycee is working for your kids.
Talking to my students isn't unprofessional; it's called building rapport, and it helps with student achievement in the classroom while also making kids feel comfortable enough to talk to you about serious situations. It's how I've been able to help students deal with everything from bad grades to drug issues to abusive situations outside of school. So I think my school is quite happy with how I conduct myself at work, thank you.
OP asked for info on the school. We responded. You're the one who took it this as a sign to be Chase's white knight. Enjoy that role and continue to tell yourself everything is fine there. Clearly you're not interested in even acknowledging some of the problems with this admin. Ignorance is bliss, baby. 😗
5
u/Edmond-de-Riv 4d ago
I am a former employee of the school and witnessed firsthand the harassment of many great educators and professionals. So I did not really have the luxury to "not care about the admin". But if it works for you and your kid, that's great !

u/Useful-Giraffe-9859 4d ago
Sorry, you had a bad experience dude but seriously blow up a balloon and let it go… Sounds like you are happy to not be there so move on… This is my CHILD’S school.

just search the sub and read the (many) news articles from the last 5 years. from pedophilic interns to gross mismanagement of funds to union busting and more, that place is a shitshow and it just gets worse. unfortunately. because there are many, many people who would love for this city to have a functional french high school.
9
u/whoopiecushions 7d ago edited 7d ago
Wow, I never heard about the pedophilic interns.
I remember they accidentally paid an extra 400k in taxes or something like that. Something like 18% of their student body has left in the past year or two. Teachers being fired or walking out midday and the parents don't even get notified. All kinds of crazy stuff. I think the most recent principal at the elementary campus left. She didn't even last a year.

u/thatgibbyguy 7d ago
Count me as one of those. Hopefully Audubon can take the reigns, they seem extremely well run from where I sit.
3
u/ghost1667 7d ago
There are very real challenges to opening a legitimate French accredited high school, especially as a public school, that have nothing to do with mismanagement. Which is why Lycee is the only one in the entire country. Though they will probably be losing their accreditation, for the HS at least, quite soon. Audubon will not pursue doing so.
1
u/MomsAgainstManBabies 5d ago
Just curious— where did you hear or get the information that Audubon won’t do this?
3
u/Useful-Giraffe-9859 7d ago edited 3d ago
All of this is drama from a small deranged group of former parents that throw never-ending fits like petulant children. Most of these people have literally no had kids at the school for YEARS and they a still will pouting since they did’t get their way. They use personal connections at media outlets and with people at the union to spread theirs lies to harm the school along with a funded campaign by UTNO. They can no longer manipulate the school leaders for their personal and financial benefit. Most of these people don't work or do anything actually productive, sadly trash talking the school is their only hobby. Additionally, There was no pedo intern! This was a disproven accusation by a crazy parent that the police and school fully investigated and dropped as baseless. Look for a police report saying an arrest occurred and you won't be able to find it bc it does not exist. The $400K spent on property taxes is part of the process to receive like $3 or $4 million in historic tax credits if I remember correctly so it led to a net income profit of millions for the school. It is a highly complex legal process another parent that is a tax attorney confirmed. The former parents that continue to make up this BS are just obsessed and clearly have no life and maybe have a high school education themselves. They have no experience or expertise in running a French High school or any type of public school in fact but just keep making false reports to try and get revenge by taking away school accreditation with no care for the hundreds of actual current students that would hurt. The teachers are annoyed with UTNO and the NLRB ruled in Lycee’s favor against UTNO. The teachers are truly amazing and I hear the CEO constantly saying they are the best in the world literally and the ones I talk to like the leadership. I recommend doing your own research based on real data and facts ignoring the gossip and union funded propaganda. The school is a damn good public school in fact, but no school is perfect. It was just recognized by the BESE Board as the first stop on their statewide success tour. I personally think the school should do more to defend themselves from these attacks but I think the leadership just doesn't have time to deal with the drama because they are focused on ideas to develop great teachers and academics for students.

u/Odd-Bumblebee2545 4d ago
You are a liar and you are doing the exact same thing you accuse others of doing, spreading gossip with no facts.
You accuse former parents of spreading lies to harm the school, then you post hearsay as fact. You write "I have heard," "I hear the CEO," and "if I remember correctly." That is gossip, not research.
You said the NLRB ruled in Lycee's favor against UTNO. Public record shows the opposite. The NLRB ordered the election to proceed and educators voted 52-12 to join UTNO.
You said BESE made the school the first stop on its statewide success tour. BESE itself announced the first regional event was in Baton Rouge on November 19.
You said the $400K in property taxes turned into $3 or $4 million in historic tax credits for a net profit, based on "if I remember correctly" and an unnamed tax attorney parent. The actual audit flagged material weaknesses and significant deficiencies related to historic tax credits, and the school was put on the Legislative Auditor's non-compliance list.
You call it a UTNO funded propaganda campaign. The public filing shows UTNO sued for public records after waiting five months for basic financial records.
You claim violent attacks and property damage, but you admit it is just something "I have heard." You demand a police report from others while providing zero reports, case numbers, or dates yourself.
You tell people to ignore gossip and do their own research based on real data. Take your own advice.

u/Useful-Giraffe-9859 4d ago edited 4d ago
I literally heard the CEO say that at numerous campus events and a board meeting so it is a fact, not gossip…
Here is the ruling from the NLRB website if you would like to educate yourself before calling someone a liar: https://nlrbresearch.com/pdfs/09031d4583f97555.pdf
The BESE Board kicked off the tour at Lycee 6 weeks ago according to the official BESE Facebook page here is a link with pictures: https://www.facebook.com/share/1D4uTcz6rz/?mibextid=wwXIfr
You are clearly not an expert, attorney, accountant, and researcher based on your level of ignorance… Definitely just one of the Looney Tune former parents with nothing better to do. I honestly feel bad for the school leaders if they really have to put up with people like you that are rude, annoying and clearly obsessed with absolutely no life and probably no job.
Everyone just got an email from the school explaining the ridiculous amounts of records request that UTNO is doing for the school to waste their money and time then they don't even come view the records…. Plus, any idiot can file a lawsuit for anything, doesn't mean there is merit to the suit… Please go educate yourself or at least find a productive hobby instead of trolling an A-rated public school that seems to be doing a lot of good for a lot kids and families even if it wasn't a fit for you.

Everyone I’ve met in that “crazy group of parents” has nothing less than a master’s but keep on with your run-on sentences. You make your own case for which “side” I’ll keep. Or perhaps English is your second language and your first name starts with a T. It IS hard to communicate without ChatGPT, isn’t it.
Glad you’re happy at such a dysfunctional school but i got my kids out two years later than i should’ve and their education suffered for it. And so do the students who remain with ever-dwindling resources due to the ongoing lawsuits filed by chase & co, salaries being paid to staff members who can’t even enter the country due to their own ineptness, and the school’s inability to retain students and remain staffed in core subjects.
Every school does have its problems but Lycee’s take the cake, even in new orleans fucked up system. There is no place for ego in education and LFNO’s leadership (or whatever they’re calling themselves these days) has it in abundance.

What are you talking about? Didn't realize this was a place for formal writing practice, but whoever you are talking about clearly lives rent free in your head. I have heard the new CEO changed some of the curriculum to make it more LEAP friendly and lessened the French instruction.
At the end of the day charter schools keep their charter from state tests scores.
There was a drive to unionized and that was busted up.
2
u/AllChemistry999 7d ago
When half the teachers come from other countries on 3-year contracts, it’s hard to unionize. I really don’t understand why they picked Lycee of all schools to start unionization efforts.
And the kicker is, the parents that left citing the “busted” unionization as a reason, transferred to schools with no such efforts at all.
4
u/ghost1667 6d ago
dense reasoning. union busting wasn't the ONLY reason we left. the school my children landed at doesn't seem to consider their teaching staff the enemy, so that's really helped!
4
u/Beneficial_Farmer455 6d ago
Families are leaving in droves and it's not because of former parents PR campaign.
9
u/AllChemistry999 7d ago
There’s a very active campaign by disillusioned parents that took their kids out over 2 years ago and won’t let go. That’s the short of it. They are active on all socials including this one.
Last time I tried to speak some sense into the “debate” I was downvoted to oblivion and harassed with private messages. Hence, why I made a new account.
They are the ones that want the school to lose their accreditation. They constantly call for completely unnecessary audits that only hurt the students and the teachers.
Don’t believe all they say online. Some of these people are unhinged.
8
u/whoopiecushions 7d ago edited 7d ago
Why are so many people leaving? It's not just a few people. And I'm not just seeing this online. I'm hearing this from other parents in real life (we've had some Lycee transferrees at my kid's school). What grade are your kids in? It seems like the people in the younger grades are happier so I'm curious. I've heard glowing reviews about most of the teachers though, even from the unhappy parents who left. But the complaints about leadership scared me away from choosing Lycée for my younger child. I'm interested in hearing your perspective. I'm only hearing from the people who left so I'm also interested in hearing from the people who are happy.
2
u/AllChemistry999 7d ago
Some left due to the move to the French Quarter, nothing to do with the school itself. But that factor was amplified by those bad actors.
And honestly, I know people who have moved their kids from school to school a lot, not from Lycee. But no one bats an eye for them.
4
u/heyitsmekaylee 7d ago
Both my kids go here and have since kindergarten. All schools have their issues and I find it wild that even with the clear success of the students at this school with passing the Bach, pretty great LEAP scores, and students passing DELF exams, people still sit and keyboard warrior the school.
https://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/louisiana/rankings/new-orleans-la-35380
Lycee is ranked the fifth best high school in Greater New Orleans and it’s a quarter of the size of many of the schools of this list. I’ll let the numbers speak for themselves.
4
u/jtopfer 6d ago
Fifth best public* high school. And the graduation rate is only 80% according to that website.
1
u/Extreme-Company-6763 3d ago
Mine graduated 2 years ago and now both attend a major university. They loved it!
3
u/AllChemistry999 7d ago
My kids love it too and are doing well. Speak more French than I do at this point. We’re not leaving.
1
u/Impossible-Basil-993 7d ago
Nola.com had an article about this group last year maybe. But the article never actually said what they wanted, which was frustrating as a Lycee parent.
-3
u/Useful-Giraffe-9859 7d ago edited 3d ago
You are 100% right! The former parents are just complete bullies and there is no debate, their opinion is the ONLY opinion and they LOVE to play victims. No factual information is considered or other’s opinions will not be tolerated by these former crazy parents. Some of the former disillusioned ones are even violent I have heard they have tried to physical attack or damage property of board members, other parents, teachers, and even the CEO. Mental health issues are a serious issue today.
1
u/Odd-Bumblebee2545 4d ago
You are lying. Nothing of the sort ever happened. This is the problem with liars, they have to make their lies bigger and bigger.
You even admit you have no facts. You said "I have heard" because you are spreading hearsay. If anyone had tried to physically attack or damage property of board members, parents, teachers, or the CEO, there would be police reports and charges. Show one. You cannot, because it never happened. Stop inventing violence to smear former parents.
1
u/Useful-Giraffe-9859 4d ago edited 4d ago
Hmmm… Interesting… Seem very defensive…. Btw, there definitely are police reports according to the Deputy Constable that works at the school.
4
u/Cerridvien 7d ago
My 4 year old started there this year and honestly I’m impressed w the school overall. Like there’s some ups and downs to everything but the downs are mainly just what school app is for what. I get weekly updates and class checks in and everyone there has been nice and supportive. I looked into leap and testing scores for the school before sending and honestly it’s not bad. I think it’s just some parents from a while back having an issue w the school which I’m sure they had a reason but I don’t see any issues on my end. We get updates mid day etc if something happens or changes in school it’s way better than previous prk classes I’ve sent him too
4
u/whoopiecushions 6d ago
I hope it stays that way. The parents I know who transferred from Lycée were really happy in the earlier years. They had such nice things to say about the teachers. Some of us at the other French schools were/are hoping Lycée can turn things around in the next few years because we wanted to consider it as a high school option for our kids. What's the status on the elementary school principal?
1
u/Cerridvien 2d ago
She seems fine and well adjusted. The school has actually addressed the fliers n such around town and asked parents with questions to discuss with them any concerns etc. which gives me a feeling of open communication at the end of the day.

u/LandoDupree 6d ago
I van tell you 1 thing: the teachers do not tip, use ashtrays, or clean up after themselves
0
u/Hot-Artichoke44 3d ago edited 1d ago
Honestly, here is the simplified version. There were a bunch of bad teachers that were personal friends with a group of entitled and frankly crazy parents and crossed serious ethical boundaries. New CEO started holding teachers accountable and following the US visa requirements because the previous CEO departed under a federal labor investigation and created a massive budget deficit building Priestly campus with no long-term plan just trying to appease the entitled crazy parent group that was there at the time. Those teachers that were bad and wanted the school to falsify information for them to qualify for a different visa then manipulated the students and parents to try and control the board and CEO like they had in the past. This group of former parents are still obsessed with the school and view trashing Lycee as some weird form of trauma bonding because they have no real social lives or jobs while they neglect their own kids literally. They hate the CEO and have a crazy vendetta against him because he is actually doing his job. I will say I think the CEO might be authistic or something bc he is not focused on his social skills haha but is hyper focused academics and expects a lot. Now, the school has brought in a bunch of great new francophone teachers from around the world and the scores on BOTH French and English test have SKYROCKETED. Lycee is now an A rated school and one of the highest performing schools in the state. The former teachers and former parents never got over losing control and joined forces with the experts of school destruction in New Orleans aka UTNO to try and destroy the school or take its accreditation to prevent a BFI testing center for students in New Orleans. This is racking up legal bills because the school is fighting back trying to get a BFI testing center so students that are low income and can’t afford to travel to Houston to test will be able to get a fair shot at the BFI. Meanwhile, UTNO is filing frivolous lawsuits and massive public records request to drain the schools financial resources to try and bankrupt Lycee all while collecting money from the teachers at other schools that are actually paying union dues for respresentation at the 3 surviving UTNO schools(Morris Jeff, Bricollage, and Ben Franklin) that they are supposed to represent to fund this silly advertising propaganda war on Lycee to drive down their enrollment and distract from Lycee’s outstanding academic performance. The NLRB already ruled that Lycee can’t have a union so why they are just wasting money on Lycee when the due paying members are struggling is beyond me. All of this money should be spent on teachers and kids but UTNO wants to blow money on their personal politics. Allwhile, the teachers at Bricollege seem to be getting screwed by UTNO with no real representation under their new CEO and don’t get me started on the BS going on with MJ’s contract “negotiations”. I think that is it in a nutshell…. so just ignore the unhinged haters, many of whom have criminal records, court records, or serious mental health issues that you can tell just looking at them because several have obvious tardive dyskinesia from long-term antipsychotics usage. The school’s data speaks for itself at Lycée and all the current teachers like it there and so do most current parents.

Your account is a day old. I wanted to give the school a chance but every post just makes it look worse.
-1
u/dirtyanjo 6d ago
I get that people want to get their voices heard but I think this goes beyond that. At this point it is affecting the children who actually go to school at Lycee and it is an unwanted distraction. Yes the school has its problems. In my opinion the whole charter school system is an issue. But I wish this group would just stop it. I feel like they are making parents feel shameful for sending their kids there and that is uncalled for.

u/nolaxnola 7d ago
You will never know but it is VERY New Orleans. When you volunteer or pay the established businesses you are funding the local “machine” and THAT machine is beyond “touchable” when it comes to accountability. Good luck but my mouth is shut. “Capeesh”?

I’ll jump in here as a parent who was pretty skeptical of both sides of this. Two years ago, we started our daughter at Lycee Pre-K. I knew about and didn’t like the union busting, but I also heard great things about the academics, and I liked the general mission and purported ethos of the school.
Our experience there was…not great. The biggest problem was administration. The principal when we started left suddenly and was only announced in a line buried in the weekly newsletter. The new principal was bouncing between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Afterschool programming was a total mess, and they TWICE lost my four year old. When I called the principal the second time, she admitted to not having had a working phone for months. The front desk admin was persona non grata and I had to call the middle school to get them to call the interim principal on her cell to talk to her. Our teacher was lovely but seemed way out of her depth. The final straw for us was this absolutely unhinged screed from the PTO president, following the completely unannounced move to the FQ campus, basically demanding fealty from parents. It was very “if you’re not with us, you’re against us” and read like the type of thing you might type up after a few drinks. Any complaint about things was twisted into a personal attack and deflected as such. Add to that the parents protesting in front of the school (to whom I am sympathetic, but it was also confusing and disruptive for kids), and the whole vibe was just chaotic.
People laud the high school academics, but I wasn’t willing to put up with the insanity until HS. Almost every parent in my kid’s Pre-K class pulled their kids, and it wasn’t because of the FQ move (which gets scapegoated, but was also terribly managed), it was because of the chaotic and adversarial administration. My daughter has been at Hynes LSU (neé UNO) since last year, in the French Immersion program, and she’s thriving. Other parents like Audubon Uptown, but we live in Gentilly so that didn’t make sense for us, and I don’t make private school money.
Overall, I wish Lycee well, but I’m not sending my kid there.
