Rumor [Rapoport] Bombshell: The #Browns are finalizing a trade of Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett to the #Rams in a shocker, sources tell me, @TomPelissero & @AdamSchefter. Cleveland would send Garrett to LA in exchange for star edge Jared Verse, a first-rounder, and more.

On the other hand, if Ty Simpson is just your league average starting QB by year 3 or 4, you won't really have to worry about drafting a QB.
It makes that pick look at least slightly better.

We have to play that entire damn division this year. You'd think we would be excited to play the Cardinals, but the Cardinals own the Cowboys. That is a guaranteed loss every time.

u/Divided_we_ Jun 01 '26
I would not want to be the Cardinals right now. Holy division hell.
1.2k
u/Helpful-Berry-94 Jun 01 '26
Honestly the cardinals are probably cool with it. Almost guarantees they’re gonna get top draft picks for the next few years, and probably hoping by then the rest of the division comes down to earth with Stafford retiring and such.
But yeah, big yikes for that division and really the entire NFC

Makes no difference. We are cooked in the short term anyways and this is a win-now trade for the rams. The closest thing we’ll have to a “window” isn’t opening this season or next no matter where Myles Garrett plays.
→ More replies (2)32
u/jdprager Jun 01 '26
Yeah this is mostly a fuck you to the 49ers specifically. Y’all aren’t contending the next couple years, so if anything this marginally helps you tank while shaving off some of the Rams future prospects when you could potentially (probably not) finally be decent. The Seahawks surely aren’t thrilled, but they just won a Super Bowl, which certainly lessens the blow
The 49ers have been trying to get over the hump for AGES, are also 100% trying to win now, and now they have to deal with another game-wrecker bulldozing their injury-prone team. Gotta feel like a fuckin funeral in Santa Clara rn

If WR3 is a concern you can find that player through FA or a trade.
It’s a lot harder to find a QB
7
u/SecretAgendaMan Jun 01 '26
The Rams were already a super bowl contender. The thing that would derail the season the most is not having a backup if their 38 year old QB got injured.
Now that they sorted that out, It's time to grab the DPOY and fully go all in.
7
u/jnightrain Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26
if you are trying to win next year a WR3 is not going to help you that much more than getting your future at QB. Makai and Simpson both would've been picks for the future and a QB is far more valuable than a WR. This makes there pick even better because they'll at least have a window still if Stafford leaves next year.
29
u/One-Extreme-5764 Jun 01 '26
It makes it smart. This trade wouldn’t happen without picking Simpson. Having QB of the future allows you to risk future draft capital.
→ More replies (10)3
u/Responsible-Onion860 Jun 01 '26
They're going full-bore on winning a Super Bowl this year. Based on their total strategy otherwise, they weren't looking to add a contributor with that pick and probably shopped it around without finding an offer they liked, so they took a QB they liked.

48
u/RTRC Jun 01 '26

21
u/kumquat_bananaman Jun 01 '26
All about 5th year option at this point. Makes sense if you’re planning on retooling under a qb of the future in 2-3 years. Not that I’m convinced he’s that guy.
1
12
u/DAS_UBER_JOE Jun 01 '26
Everyone that says this is just not taking context into account. He gets to sit and learn behind Stafford, Mcvay, and Kliff Kingsbury while also allowing us to say fuck them picks and get myles.
5
u/RTRC Jun 01 '26
Nobody is debating that. He's going to spend two years on the bench, then the Rams will need another year or two to rebuild following the 'fuck them picks' strategy and the only chance to evaluate him will be on a post superbowl run roster with a lot of holes by the time you have to decide on his 5th year option.
-1
u/sirkswiss Jun 02 '26
Who says they have to have a lot of holes in this roster? This FO thinks short and long term.
5
u/Shurqeh Jun 01 '26

8
→ More replies (3)10
u/sonfoa Jun 01 '26
Not really. They're expecting to be Super Bowl contenders for at least the next two years so were willing to roll the dice on a QB at 13 and then trade next year's first for a superstar pass rusher.
→ More replies (2)26
u/Dizzy_Job_8289 Jun 01 '26
If anything it proves they’re still going all in for right now, which doesn’t make the Simpson pick look any better
34
u/__sonder__ Jun 01 '26
I don't know. If they knew all along they were going to try and trade the 2027 first for Garrett, then they also knew they wouldn't have the ability to draft a 1st round QB next year when Stafford likely retires.
So if there wasn't anyone on the board this year who immediately helps you win the super bowl, maybe you take the QB now and set yourself up to not be completely screwed at qb next year.

Am I crazy for thinking the Browns did ok here? Maintain a stud on their DL, on his rookie deal for (at least) 2 more years, and pickup another first round pick (likely 28–32 but still first round). Like they get 80-85% Garrett’s production for like 1/10 the cost in the short term and might have the next Garrett.
26
u/Heil_Heimskr Jun 01 '26
The Browns definitely did more than okay, depending how Verse develops this could turn into another Stafford trade where both teams do well out of it. The Browns were never going to compete now with Garrett and they got some very good value for him.
12
u/Octavian_202 Jun 01 '26
They cooked. They got a young top shelf edge, and a 1st for next year in a loaded draft, plus whatever else. No need to waste Garrett, they are going for the top pick next year, and they will have weapons for that QB.

If they can move off of Watson and all their other garbage QBs and actually draft a good one (they’ve hit on one QB in my lifetime), they could make some serious noise the next few years.

I mean Jared Verse looks like he could be a top 10 pass rusher for a long time and they get another first rounder. But that’s gonna be a late first rounder, and they traded a top 3 defensive player (at worst) every season coming off arguably his best. It’s tricky af but they need to nail the pick

This looks like a win-win for both teams, For the Browns it makes no sense trying to be good for the next 2/3 years and then rebuilding when Garett falls off. If anything they want to be worse so they can find a QB. The Rams are the opposite, it makes no sense to wait for verse to (hopefully) develop into a top 10 edgerusher just in time for Stafford to retire.

I think it really is all-in this season. Not sure how they can afford Stafford, Garrett, and an upcoming Puka extension on top of everything else they've got.

Probably the only way they could avoid sending multiple FRP. Verse could count as a FRP anyway.
