How is living in this area?
Looking at a place up Elm St. quite a bit. I feel like back in the day it had a bad reputation, but seems pretty nice and quiet these days.

New Haven Hotline: 854-666-4472
Save this number in your phone! All operators are bilingual (EN & ES).
We've seen a LOT of posts regarding ICE in New Haven. This post is written in conjunction with New Haven Immigrants Coalition to help everyone in our community know what to do if you think you see ICE or hear rumors of them in town.
As urgent as it may feel, posting unverified rumors without details does not help.
If you see something yourself:
SALUTE - as people have posted in many comments. Get the:
S - Size of the group
A - Actions they're taking - are they standing around, approaching a house/business, walking on the sidewalk (which side and which direction?)
L - Location, as precise as possible. "Whalley Ave" or "Fair Haven" is not helpful - "Whalley and Norton" or "Grand between Ferry and Poplar" is much more useful.
U - Uniforms - what are they wearing?
T - Time - What time was this observed?
E - Equipment - What are they driving? Note color/make/model.
Get as much video as possible.
Contact New Haven Immigrants Coalition: With any SALUTE information you have, call the hotline at 854-666-4472.
If someone else is claiming to see ICE:
* Tell them to call the line and encourage them to provide SALUTE information on their call.
* You might not be able to gather every piece of info, but as much as possible is helpful. Vague reports or unconfirmed rumors are actually harmful as people go to investigate and see what's going on.
If you see someone being stopped by immigration enforcement agencies (possible agencies may include ICE, DHS, HSI, DEA and others):
* call or ask someone to call the hotline
* Get video
* Get the person’s name
* Document any refusal by the agents to show badge, ID, warrant, etc.
Example of an unhelpful post:
“ICE was on whalley earlier”
Example of a helpful post:
“Already called the hotline and they’re sending someone but there are masked men in vests next to the Whalley Ave Stop & Shop in 3 unmarked cars. I saw them at 12:15 (so right now). Be careful if you’re going shopping right now.”
We keep us safe!

I didn't realize Otaru had closed until I saw a comment in the post about Olea closing. It got me thinking what other restaurants closed in the last 12 months. Really sad to see and I have to imagine this more than the average year in New Haven
- Skappo — December 2025
- Cookie39 — December 2025
- B Natural — February but Twirl has since opened on their location!
- The Place 2 Be — looks like officially March but I thought they got shut down well before that?
- Strega Restaurant — June
- Tiger Daddy — July
- Havenly Cafe — July replaced by La Cocina De Sandra
- Westville Seafood — August
- Manjares Cafe—September
- Otaru—September
- Crepes Choupette — September
- Casanova — October 13
- Katalina's Bakery — October 21
- Olea—November 14 2026
- Dangle's Bar & Grill — I know they closed at some point in the last year but not sure when?
-York Street Noodle House — Couldn't find the date but remember seeing it on here this summer
- MoFonGo — Same couldn't find the date but remember seeing it on here this past year. UPDATE different restaurant with no turnover? Idk I can't find anything online
-Annie’s Kitchen but Mila Cafe is there now!
-Someone posted in another thread that Glaze and Grind's location is for sale but I think they're still open?
- Honorable mention for Bark and Vine — December 2025. Not a restaurant but I miss them. Glad to see Showoff Ink was able to move in so quickly.
Any others I'm missing? Also any new ones that opened up in the last year to try out? I know of Mila Cafe and Twirl
Update
- Cave a' Vin closed this year but a new wine bar is opening in the same spot
- Ten second noodle— closed but couldn't find when
- Arwa — opened January 2026
- 7th street burger — opened August 2026 in the old salad shop location
- Bar August — Closed March 2025 and Xolo Snack Bar opened in their place
- Polmag Deli — Closed April 2026
- Between Two Breads —Opened October 2026 in the old Phillys location
- Fussy Coffee — Closed September 2025

Halloween may be on Saturday, but the festivities aren't waiting. There's a whole cauldron's worth of things in the mix between now and then—and more bubbling over on the big night itself.
We have 60+ events for you to check out: https://dailynutmeg.com/blogs/blog/this-halloween-in-new-haven-october-27-31

Hey folks. Recently, an intersection I pass through almost daily as a pedestrian has a new stoplight pattern.
As a result of it, I nearly get hit by a car almost every day because it seems like cars either can’t see me or can’t tell the pedestrian light is on. This wasn’t so much of an issue before the new traffic pattern.
Is there anywhere I can report this? I tried to look through various New Haven websites but I didn’t find any “contact us” boxes, etc., at all. Not sure if reporting will do much but I need somewhere to put the anxiety I’ve accumulated from so many close calls these last few months 😭
Thanks!!

Hey folks! I’m proud to announce Cafe Nine’s 4th Annual Band Halloween Coat Drive & Fundraiser happening this Thursday, October 29.
We’ve got a bunch of rad local bands dressing up and performing cover sets by everyone from Devo to Linkin Park to the Grease soundtrack. Bring a coat for the coat drive and get a free drink from the bar. All door proceeds are being donated to the ULA (Unidad Latina en Accion), a local grassroots organization that provides direct monetary assistance to immigrant and refugee families that have been directly and negatively impacted by you-know-who.
This is always a really fun night that also supports a great cause, so I’d love to see you all down there! Doors are at 6 PM, $10 suggested donation at the door.

Longtime Southern Connecticut State University English Professor Michael Shea was crossing Whatley Ave. in a marked crosswalk on October 9 when the E-bike struck him. He died of his injuries on Saturday.
Police are searching for the rider.

Hi all. I’m going to be Future for Halloween and want to recreate this epic photo. However I don’t know where in the New Haven area there is a restroom with this kind of mirror. Please let me know if you know of a place!

Kinda feels like a cop out. Granted I haven't been out since the storm, but I feel like the pavilion has quite literally nothing to do with the light show.

This week, O&W (87 Union Street) saw a complete 180-degree turnaround. All chutes and trash room floors were completely clear (except for a few late-night bags, a flat-screen TV on 2nd Floor Union, and flattened boxes on 2nd Floor Olive), the compactor room was the cleanest it has ever been, and rolling dumpsters were actively utilized—showing ownership took action and approved dedicated weekend porter support to manage the workload properly. In the future, effective resident education and lease enforcement will likely be needed to keep these spaces clear.
Check out the curated gallery of key photos above, or browse this week's full photo folder to see all 15 items for yourself.
Credit Where It’s Due
A massive thank you to our on-site team—especially Luis, our new maintenance worker, whose hard work made this immediate improvement happen.
Thank you also to Building Ownership, Mayor Justin Elicker, LCI Director Liam Brennan, Ward 6 Alder Carmen Rodriguez, and Fire Marshal Jerry Rynich.
Documenting this was always about achieving basic habitability, safety, and operational dignity for both residents and staff. I trust we can count on everyone involved to maintain this level of code compliance every weekend going forward.

I didn't see any posts when I did a search. Has anyone used a paintless dent repair company? How was the outcome? How long did it take and how expensive was it?
My brand new car has a tiny golf ball sized dent in the hood from a tree walnut falling on it!
My older SUV has a dent on the door with a little bit of the other car's paint showing but no metal or rust.
Thanks in advance.

It's a branch of Ozzy's that has recently opened inside a London pub. And in honor of the location they offer a fish and chips apizza.

Hi! I wanted to ask if anyone has reccs for a nicer place (not TikTok or instagram famous/viral) for a weeknight dinner? Good food/decent prices. I trust the opinions here more than anything I find on other social media.
Doesn’t have to be just in New Haven, open to Norwalk or Stamford/down the coast! Open to all cuisines!

I’ve never gotten my nails done before but want to for a holiday party in December. I don’t want anything too crazy, just a gradient like in the photo on my natural nails.
Any suggestions on where to go that won’t break the bank?

I found a dog in New Haven last night. We took her to a vet today and she doesn’t have a chip. I already contacted animal control but the officer I spoke to basically said if I brought her there I’d be sending her to “dog prison” and it’s a horrible environment to send a dog into. I decided to keep her for the 7 day hold and try to find a rescue that will take her in if nobody claims her. She’s fairly well behaved I just can’t keep her due to having a large dog that isn’t great with little dogs. If anyone recognizes her or has any info on a good rescue in the area please let me know! I’m new to New Haven so I’m pretty unfamiliar with the local rescues.

It’s tough out there for restaurants trying to do quality food, beverage, and service. Wishing the best to the team at Olea for a great future. Thanks for the good times!

Got a $250 ticket in the mail for passing a school bus on Fountain Street. Obviously a complete accident, would never intentionally pass a stopped school bus.
I reviewed the footage they linked in the letter and the stop sign was opening as I was already next to the bus. If I slammed on my breaks I probably could’ve made it, but obviously that’s not the safest maneuver either.
Going to contest it because I have nothing to lose. I’m broke and have a near perfect driving record, never even got a speeding ticket. Had anyone had experience contesting something like this? Really really hoping they’ll give me a break for a first time offense.

Hi r/newhaven,
I've been recently interested in trying to open up some sort of bakery/breakfest place in the downtown area - I wanted to do niche themes like DND, warhammer and other hobby-themed pastries/foods. Would people be interested in something like that? Trying to get a gauge, see what people think....

Has anyone lived at The Taft on the lower floors? Would love to hear your thoughts! I know it can be noisy but im also wondering if there are any other downsides to living there. The location and price work really well for me but im worried there might be things im overlooking. Thanks!

Getting bored of the one coffee shop in my suburb and want to try studying in downtown but every place I see is either sofas/benches or their tables are not study friendly lol. Honestly doesn’t even have to be a cafe a bar is fine too
I’d hate to have to resort to Starbucks

Would it be a good idea to apply for New Havens Academy as a Junior? Is it too late?
