Asking a Question? Read this first!

Important!

Please provide some key information when asking a question.

1) What technology are you on (FTTP, FTTN, FTTC, FTTB, HFC, FW)

2) What is your service class (1 to 34). Check here https://www.aussiebroadband.com.au/network/connection-insights/

3) How are you connected to your modem / router? WiFi or Ethernet. You should test with your device on Ethernet. If your connection is poor on WiFi but good on Ethernet, then it's a WiFi issue, not an NBN issue.

4) Who is your provider (e.g. Telstra, Optus, TPG, Aussie Broadband, etc)

5) What brand and model is your modem / router? If you're not sure, take a picture of it and upload it to imgur or similar (don't upload it as part of your post)

6) Describe your problem, and what steps you have tried.

Check NBN availability

If you're NOT on FTTP, you may be eligible for an upgrade to the far superior FTTP.

Check Service Class

Aussie Broadband provide a great tool to determine your service class and technology type, and what that means:

General Tips

You almost certainly don't need the fastest internet plan. Generally start with a slower plan, and if you are happy, then all good. If you are finding it slow you can always upgrade. You should also check if it's your internet (NBN) or internal network (e.g. WiFi) that is slow. A faster plan might not help if you internal network is the problem.

Beware of plans with very slow (5 or 10mbit) upload speeds. These are legacy plans left over from the old HFC/Cable days. If you do have one of these legacy plans, you should think about upgrading.

WiFi (Don't use it if you care about speed!)

WiFi is subject to interference from all kinds of sources. It slows down through walls, congestion from neighbours, etc will slow it down, and can cause issues. It's also a shared medium, which means that all your devices share the bandwidth, so lots of devices operating at once means slower speeds for devices.

Where practical use Ethernet to connect devices. Ethernet is more reliable and lower latency. While some WiFi claims to be faster than Ethernet, that is the cumulative total, not the rate to a single device. Even the latest WiFi6 is only approaching Ethernet speed, and that is only when there is no other traffic on the wireless spectrum - including Bluetooth and your Microwave!

There are some cases where WiFi is better (e.g. TV's with 100Mbps ports that you want to stream very high bit rate to from local sources), but almost always Ethernet is better if available. The down side is it's not always possible to run Ethernet (e.g. rentals), and not every devices has Ethernet ports (e.g. phones, tablets).

Mesh Networks

If your WiFi isn't fast enough, consider getting a mesh network. This provides multiple access points (typically 3) so you can get better coverage. If practical connect each mesh point via Ethernet (wired backhaul). Ethernet backhaul has the same advantages as connected devices by ethernet.

WiFi Frequencies

WiFi can be on 2.4GHz, 5GHz or 6GHz. Most devices work on 2.4GHz. Lots also work on 5GHz as well. The newest ones use 6GHz in addition to 2.4 and 5GHz.

2.4GHz has the best range, but lowest speed, and the most congested.

5GHz is shorter range, and has a higher speed because there's less congestion due to the shorter range

6GHz is extremely short range (it does not penetrate walls well) but it is designed to work in parallel with the 5GHz signal to provide the fastest speeds possible.

When buying a new wireless device, you should look for one branded 'WiFi 6'(802.11ax) or the newest standard, 'WiFi 7'(802.11be). The previous standard was called '802.11ac' or WiFi 5. These are usually cheaper, but in most situations are perfectly capable.

Pinned PSA: Thinking about changing ISPs for a better deal? Here's what THEY are paying

I keep seeing a bunch of posts about people churning to save money. Here's the wholesale ex-tax price that your ISP is paying to connect to the NBN network. This is NOT including IP traffic, APNIC fees, backhaul, staff, support, infrastructure like routers and switches, and space in a Data centre.

https://www.nbnco.com.au/corporate-information/media-centre/media-statements/Wholesale-Price-Changes-from-1-July-

Link to full pricelist: https://www.nbnco.com.au/content/dam/nbn/documents/sell/sau/FY27-Tariff-List-v1.0%E2%80%93010526.pdf.coredownload.pdf

Here's the planned price increases, too: (Updated 2026-09-20)

https://www.nbnco.com.au/content/dam/nbn/documents/sell/sau/FY27-FY29-Pricing-Roadmap-v1.0%E2%80%93010526.pdf.coredownload.pdf

If you look at that, you'll see that you're paying, on average, $20 for your ISP to provide everything APART from the connection to your place. Support, Internet, Routing, Redundancy, infrastructure, etc.

Don't churn to an ISP that is losing money. You'll never end up happy, or you'll just be churning again in a few months time.

Yes, I am a NBN provider. No I'm not telling you which one.

nbn EE for Residential Use

Need help. I’m currently on a solid HFC 1000/100 connection, but I’m looking to upgrade to fibre.

I got a quote of around $15,000 through the nbn Technology Choice Program, which is way too much to pay upfront.

After looking into alternatives, I found nbn Enterprise Ethernet (EE), which offers $0 installation on a 36-month contract. Over the 3 years, it actually works out cheaper for me, especially since I’m planning to move house after that. The biggest benefit is being able to pay monthly instead of one huge upfront cost.

My residential address is eligible for EE, but I have a few questions about actually getting connected:

1. Business requirements: I have an ABN from an old side business that I no longer use. Is having an ABN enough to sign up? Do ISPs ask for proof that you’re actively running a business? If so, what kind of questions or documents do they ask for?

2. Reason for upgrading: My main reason for wanting fibre is lower latency for gaming and better reliability and connection speed for office meetings from home. I know my current HFC connection is already good, but I’d still prefer fibre. Will an ISP question why I want EE when my current connection works fine? Do I need to provide a business-related reason for getting it?

3. Anything else: Has anyone here gone through this process at a residential address? Is there anything else I should know, or any issues I might run into?
Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who’s done something similar.
Thanks!

Advice Moving to a unit without Coaxial Port

Hi,

We are moving to a new apartment unit. When we search the address on the Internet provider websites, it says this unit is "HFC Enabled".

Problem is the current renter does not use NBN, and it seems there isn't any NBN box nor any coaxial port. When asked in Exetel chatbot, it said:

"You're right that the unit doesn't have an NBN box yet. The street connection and lead-in are already in place. The unit still needs the internal cabling and wall socket installed. That's normally arranged as part of your new service order."

So I am not sure how to proceed with this now. I am new to this country and this is the first time I am dealing with NBN (My previous home had shared wifi). I know I will need to get an approval from the agent/landlord, but what happens after that? How to proceed this?

Thanks! 🙏🏻

FTTP in pure HFC Area?

I see a HFC area (Moorebank south) in NSW. Almost everyone has HFC. Yet there is one new detached house under construction (its a subdivison like mine) (see my mouse at the bottom lower left with a green dot). How did that one house get FTTP? They paid for it? The first 3 dots we see are new townhouses so i think nbn gave them fttp? Im just wondering since im their neighbour and I didn't get FTTP when I knockdown rebuild subdivide.

I'm just thinking if anyone has an idea (and yes I can just walk up and ask the owner but I don't see them yet)

Needing help from smarties

Hi guys, I am planning to move soon and am trying to decide which Wi-Fi provider I should go with. I have tried a lot of the compare websites, but they feel... untrustworthy, and I was hoping some Wi-Fi smart people could help and give me some advice.

Details:

- I'm moving into a one bedroom apartment by myself

- I often play online multiplayer games on my PS5

- I live in Sydney (not sure if that changed anything)

- I have a modem but am potentially buying a new one when I move (not sure if it's my modem that's been horsecrap, the provider or a mixture of both

- I have a few smart home devices

- Would prefer not to break the bank, but understand that's hard with today's economy

- I have been with Tangerine and Belong before, but the internet has been suuuupppppeeeerrrrr laggy and glitchy, dc's for days, cuts in and out, etc., etc

- Somewhere with a new user deal would be amazing and preferably not a lock in contract

Any help would be super appreciated; I don't know much about the internet and all the terminology, tried to learn and then failed miserably. :)

Crap Upload speeds with Kogan

Hi all,

I’ve been with Kogan for about 7 years and, for the most part, it’s been fine. I’m on HFC with a 500/50 plan.

Yesterday I noticed my upload speed had dropped to around 2 Mbps. I was remotely accessing some servers at home and everything was painfully slow.

When I got home, I rebooted the NBN box and the upload speed came back up to around 20 Mbps. I then rebooted my router, but that didn’t make any difference. I restarted the NBN box again and this time it went back up to around 50 Mbps.

The strange thing is that it’s still really inconsistent. I can run a speed test and get around 18 Mbps upload, then run another one a few minutes later and get the full 50 Mbps.

Download speeds seem completely fine and are consistently 500+ Mbps.

Has anyone else on Kogan/NBN HFC noticed anything similar recently? Trying to work out whether this is likely to be Kogan, an NBN/HFC issue, or something at my end.

P.S I am in the south east suburbs of Melbourne

Discussion High speed use cases (>500mb/s)

Curious to know what people’s genuine use case is for home / non business uses of any speed over say 500.
I’ve recently upgraded from 40 to 100 and it’s exceptional for our household.
I never had any issues working from home, using teams or transferring data over vpn when we were on 40
Often had a tv streaming at the same time.

Fully understand more users = more demand but surely that caps out by say 500 and everything above becomes rather avant garden- you amass media at rates far in excess of what you can consume, there’s an upper limit on simultaneous streams and gaming.
I just can’t see what 2000 mb/s is actually required for.

At the basis of this question is my own dilemma - do I continue with my fttp upgrade now (was planning to upgrade to 750 but it has been stalled by power issues at my house I need to resolve first) or stay modest until upgrades are better supported in rural areas.
There may well be some uses I didn’t know I need (or more likely want) until I hear them..

Advice Switching from Origin? Wait till Black Friday? (Looking at Optus/Superloop)

I need to switch my nbn provider.

Currently with origin and was paying ~$50 a month for 500/50 unlimited. Unfortunately that introductory deal has dried up and it's now almost $100.

Obviously I am now looking to switch, I have my eye on the same packages for:
- $68 p/m Optus
- $74 p/m Superloop

At this stage though, is it worth waiting (& paying one month of Origin's full price) for Black Friday? Do the offers come much lower? I won't need a modum etc as I am on a mesh.

Appreciate it in advance

Advice TPG ID Verification

Hi all, not 100% if this is the right place to post but generally just looking for some advice on a situation I’m currently in the midst of with TPG.

Basically just looking for advice and a bit of a temperature check in terms of whether I’m being unreasonable or not.

I’ve had TPG internet off and on since about 2014/2015 under accounts in my name. Most recently had TPG internet and changed address recently.

Somehow in the address change, the TPG staff have changed my date of birth. I wasn’t asked to provide one when they set up the new account so there’s no way I’ve somehow given them the wrong information.

As a result, technicians would not assist me beyond basic trouble shooting (never escalating drop outs) because they couldn’t ID me.

To resolve this they need me to fill out a form. I’ve done that about 5 times now. They also want me to upload a selfie of myself holding up my passport/other photo ID via this verification platform that seems to use a third party biometrics service provider.

I’m somewhat uncomfortable with this as I’ve had my data leaked to the dark web before (Thanks Medibank!) and have asked if there’s any alternate ways to verify but they have refused and advised I need to do this.

So I’ve asked for some clarification, why the data is necessary, where it’s stored, how long for etc. I understand that the overseas call centre staff generally can’t answer this on a front line level but basically no one is addressing my concerns.

Fundamentally it just seems wrong to provide them more personal data considering they couldn’t keep a date of birth straight.

I’ve lodged a complaint with TIO after going round and round with their “privacy team”. Essentially no one can give me assurance.

Ultimately the move is to go to a better provider, but I’m keen to understand if it seems like I’m being unreasonable.

UPDATE: oddly enough this has been going on for about a month but someone from the local disputes team got in contact today.

We spoke on the phone for a few minutes and about 10 minutes after that she advised me that they have corrected the error using my old account information and confirmed that they had got the month wrong somehow when transferring the data.

I’ve also already switched to Aussie Broadband so hopefully won’t run into this BS again once it’s all set up.

Advice Is this black stuff normal?

Post image
73 Upvotes

Found some geckos living in my NBN (they left a hole to the outside and had no gap filler) so did a clean out and noticed this blackness above my NTD.

NBN works fine but does make a low buzzing noise.

I tried to clean off the black soot and it’s not budging. Wall is pretty solid, it’s a concrete wall on the outside so I don’t think it’s mould (and doesn’t appear elsewhere).

Is this serious?

UPDATE: NBNCo responded and said it was normal and just caused from heat dissipation. Low buzzing noise is apparently expected as well. Thanks for the laughs in the comments.

Eero 6+ cannot connect to Internet

Thumbnail gallery
8 Upvotes

Moved into our new home two days ago and have still been unable to set up our eero routers.
I’m with Belong and so am able to get use the standard settings on the router.

I was previously connected with the same router at the old house with no problem (with Belong)

I’ve called Belong who insist that everything is working their end, I’ve replaced the Ethernet cable, I’ve purchased a replacement Eero6+, reset the NBN box

Moving house is shit enough without Kids screaming because they can’t watch tv or YouTube. Really hoping someone here can help me out.

I feel like I’ve tried everything I can think of

EDIT: Thankyou to everyone who took the time to answer. It was in face an issue with the ISP provisioning the service. To 10 points to everyone who guessed that. I learned a valuable lesson today.

Advice Moved into a granny flat with no internet access

I just moved into a granny flat in Adelaide and there is no ports or anything set up to allow a tenant to have an NBN connection.

The house the granny flat is attached to is registered and I believe they have internet, but when calling up service providers, I was told to call up an Electrician or a licensed cabler, who have told me they cannot help me installing a conduit or anything of the sort.

I have no idea on what to do now, should I keep trying to get NBN with FTTP set up in the flat or should I just get Starlink set up?

Advice PCD install at front door

Hey there,

Completing a new build, with boundary to boundary walls. NBN PCD was installed at our entrance, right next to front on a the wall.

How screwed am I? I’ve seen there installed on the side of a property but with boundary walls that is not possible.

I’m told there are no other compliant locations by the builder. Driving around the suburb we seemed to be the only house with it installed this way.

If NBN won’t move it, can I legally smash it to pieces with a sledgehammer? I hear Starlink is good these days 😂

I hate compliance

Latency issues after switching provider.

I bought a 2 story small townhouse in Brisbane with my partner end of last year and chose TPG as our initial ISP.

While with TPG for the past 6 months I never had much of an issue other than the price. I had a 850mbps plan with TPG and got the tp-link Ax5400 router from them. I usually game a lot competively and never had much latency issues even with the router sitting in the garage as that is where the modem is. My PC is located upstairs but still usually sat at around 29-32Ms.

I recently pulled the trigger and switched to superloop for pricing reasons and got on a 1gbps plan. I also opted for the eero 7.

At first the latency was no issue but all of a sudden past 2 days is has been jumping between 100-250ms and it is making gaming impossible.

I came to the conclusion that for whatever reason having a router in the garage downstairs is no longer at an adequate range to reach my pc.

Today I bought a ethernet cable to run up to my PC from the garage router thinking that would atleast fix my gaming issues for good. FOR SOME REASON with a ethernet cable im still not getting the 29-32ms anymore and although improved it is now at 40-43ms.

Could somebody please explain what the issue could be as it is driving me crazy.

And yes I have tried all the setting on the eero 7 like SQM and MLO and literally everything.

Thanks guys 😊

Discussion Just got Fibre installed, but losing a lot of performance over WiFi? What are my options

Not sure if this is the correct spot to ask this so apologise in advance if it isn’t.

I got my Fibre activated this morning and I’m currently on the 1gb plan, in the lounge room where the router is located I’m getting 980(ish)

In the bedrooms where my PC is and my phone it’s dropping to around 450-500ish, a substantial loss.

I am assuming this is because of my router and just how WiFi works ( I’m not massively experienced with routers and stuff ) I have a AX10 TP Link router, which should be able to handle 1gb, not the 2gb. But it is still a cheap router.

What options do I have mainly for my PC to get the faster speed in there? Do those power line adapter things work for $200?

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Troubleshooting Almost 50 NBN dropouts yesterday (65+ this week)

Post image
10 Upvotes

I really don’t know where to go from here.

I’m with Superloop, 100/40, FTTC using an Eero Modem and NBN box provided by Superloop.

When we first moved in 12 months ago we had zero issues at all. The last few months we started to get some dropouts which became frequent and the last few weeks as the screenshot below shows, anywhere from 50-100 dropouts over a 7 day period.

When it drops out, the NBN LAN and DSL light disappear.

I went to speak to our neighbour and he said his internet is fine (different provider) and same with another one below us. So I’m unsure if it’s isolated to our cables?

I don’t have a laptop to test anything with if I needed to but surely this is not normal? I’ve unplugged everything (yesterday for half the day while out) and even purchased new cables to connect to the surface LAN mount on my wall to the nbn box.

I’ve just got off a call with Superloop and they said they will try organise a NBN technician?

Any advice. We literally can’t get through a movie without it dropping out and I can’t recall the last time I finished a round on Battlefield lol.

Advice Renting and trying to find a better WiFi provider

Hi all, I've recently just started renting in a granny flat in a share house and my landlord has set up a Telstra connection but the connection keeps crashing or disconnecting from my area, for context my landlord and his family live in another house and the people in the main house don't use the WiFi it's only for me since I am paying for the bill but it's under my landlord and he sorts everything out, I was wondering if I would be able to switch providers to like Aussie broadband, we had some Telstra guys set up the nbn and I'm not sure if I'm locked into Telstra or if I can select something else and deal with and pay for everything out of my pocket
