Asking Advice Help me escape

I need to relocate from my current country or I'll lose my mind. I feel I'm a total stranger to every single person in my life. Culturally, you are stuck living with your family. So I wanna go far away to be alone instead of being lonely but surrounded by lots of people. I lived abroad for 2 years in an eastern European country studying and got back after getting my diploma but mainly because my visa expired. My passport is disgustingly weak and I'm unable to apply for a student visa anymore I'm tired of studying. I work remotely my salary isn't the best but not too bad I can barely survive on it in a different country.

Could you please gimme advice on how to just start a new life. I need a reset button because I really can't do it anymore.

im 25F, i was born and raised in southern california and wow the rent here is no joke. ive worked a minimum wage job almost my whole life and only the last two years have i really cut back on spending to ALWAYS have 5k in my checking account at all times. ive landed this really great full time job + benefits and for full transparency im making 25/hour. why is it still not enough?! i mean i GUESS it technically is but i dont know, is that smart? im genuinely curious HOW do people move out?? ive started a side hustle that makes me around 1k in extra cash a month but its not ALWAYS 1k. i dont know man, why is this so hard? what are you all doing that youve moved out?

Asking Advice What are necessary things to do when/after moving to another state?

I'm (30M) planning to move on my own for the 1st time, from Denver to somewhere on the east coast by next year but I don't know anyone and all the roommate finder websites and apps are extremely scammy and full of spam and have had no luck on any. I've also been looking on here in apartment finder subreddits but there's also a bunch of spam/flaky people after many attempts of reaching out to a lot of people in said subs.

What things/steps are needed in order to smoothly transition from 1 place to another in terms of getting settled and looking for a place? I don't plan on getting a car, just living in the city walking everywhere/taking public transportation. I've been very sheltered my whole life and have struggled with mental health issues since childhood and don't know really anything about adult life. Attaining any kind of insurance for health, housing, etc or how to basically live on my own but I need to start living my own life for once. Any advice?

Asking Advice Want to move out

Hi everyone I’m currently 22 and I really want a change of environment. I want to work in the medical field primarily just do lab work and I’m looking to go to Chicago. I’m a bit nervous though because I have 10k in saving and I’ve been applying to jobs but not hearing anything back. I was wondering should I just take a leap of faith and look for work there or wait until I secure a job?I want to move January or February.

Asking Advice Has anyone moved away from their hometown in their 20s? How did you adjust?

hey guys! i’m 24 & my husband & i have been thinking a lot about moving away from home & starting a life in florida. we currently live in new jersey, so it would be a pretty big move for us. i’m honestly really excited about the idea, but also pretty nervous because i’d be leaving behind my family, friends, & everything i’ve always known.
one of the biggest reasons we want to move is because new jersey has become unbearably expensive, & the houses we’ve seen for rent in florida are so much nicer for the price compared to what we can find here. we’ve visited florida quite a few times & we both really love it there, so it’s definitely somewhere we could see ourselves living.
i think the biggest thing holding me back is the thought of having to start over socially. i’m so used to having my friends & family close by, & the idea of moving somewhere where i don’t really know anyone is a little scary. i’m also worried about how difficult it might be to make new friends as an adult. i know my family & friends will still visit & vise versa, but i wont be seeing them as much as i do now. so i guess my question is, for anyone who has moved far away from home in their 20s, how was your experience? was it hard to make new friends & build a social life? did you ever regret moving away from everyone you knew? i’d love to hear your experiences or any advice you might have. thank you! :)

Asking Advice Boston apartment hunting is one thing. Actually moving in December or January is a completely different experience.

Between snow-covered sidewalks, icy stairs, parking restrictions, and trying to carry furniture into older buildings, there's a lot that can go wrong.

And honestly, even something as simple as keeping cardboard boxes dry becomes a problem when the weather isn't cooperating.

One thing I think people underestimate is how much time bad weather can add to a move. If you're paying movers by the hour, those delays can make a difference.

A couple of moving and packing tips worth keeping in mind: check the weather and parking restrictions before moving day, protect anything that shouldn't get wet, and make sure the path between the truck and the entrance is clear and safe.

I'm with Premium Q Moving & Storage here in Boston, and I'm curious how other people have handled winter moves.

Was it the snow, the parking, the stairs, or something you never even thought about until moving day?

And for anyone who's done both, would you rather move during Boston's September 1 chaos or in the middle of January? What was the worst part?

Asking Advice Considering moving, now i need advice about any running scams to not fall for

I know the big ones. Price jump at pickup, deposit before paperwork, fake reviews. What about the scams that people who think they're doing their homework still miss. The ones hiding in the fine print or in the gap between what you asked and what they answered

Asking Advice Financially irresponsible 22 year old college senior, living in a toxic household.

I would absolutely love if somebody could help me figure out the logistics of moving out. Im in my final year of college ( i graduate in may) & i commute from home to save home. Although I don’t pay rent, living at home has been detrimental to my mental health bc of my mother ( I can add context in the comments if needed but I kid you not it will be a 10+ list of things)

Despite having a 3.6 GPA in college, I am bad with money. If I were smarter, I would’ve probably had enough to move out, but that isn’t the case. So any tips on moving out?

  1. I will be in a city that is transportation heavy, I have used this system since I was in middle & I used it 2x a week currently so I don’t need to factor in a car expense. ( If I could, my mom would be willing to buy me a car but again, the 10+ list & Id rather be carless than have her hold that over my bead)

  2. I created a cash budget for this endeavor, some may see this as a waste, but it physically prevents me from touching that money & I keep my bedroom locked whenever I am not home. How much to save, specifically for the Boston region? I heard the rule of saving 3x the rent and then some.…

  3. I know that I won’t be able to move out right away or maybe for another year or two, but I truly do believe that if I save money now who knows, I may have enough by graduation.

TLDR: Financially irresponsible college senior, lives with toxic mom, is bad with money but wants to move out, lives in expensive city but no car no problem, wants advice

thanks in advance :)))

Asking Advice What's the one thing you always lose track of during a move?

It's funny how you can spend days packing everything carefully, then somehow spend the first night in your new place looking for your phone charger.

I've seen people get really organized with box numbers, room labels, and even QR codes. But there's always that one thing that disappears into a box you swear you labeled.

One of my favorite moving and packing tips is to keep a small bag with the stuff you'll need in the first 24 hours, and don't put it on the moving truck.

Chargers, medication, toiletries, a change of clothes, and maybe coffee supplies if you can't function without them.

I'm with Premium Q Moving & Storage in Boston, and I'm curious what people have learned from their own moves.

What's the one thing you've packed away and immediately regretted?

And did you ever find it before unpacking everything?

Asking Advice Too old to live at home

I'm 31 years old and desperately want to move out of my family's home and finally experience living independently. I currently work full-time in retail, making $15 an hour, and I'm willing to relocate anywhere in the United States if it means finding somewhere affordable. My biggest obstacle is that I can't drive due to medical reasons, so I rely on Uber for transportation. I don't want roommates and would really prefer to live completely alone, even if that means living in a tiny studio, mobile home, or trailer. I've even considered moving to Florida or another state with a lower cost of living. I don't need anything fancy, just somewhere safe, quiet, and affordable where I can have my own space. I need to move out for my mental health. It is infurating because my younger siblings live alone. I am not sure how or where to start. I am not sure if cities are relastic bc i do not walk much. Every area i bring up to my mom is either not safe or too far out of state.

Asking Advice Im planning on moving out of my narcissistic parents' home, I need advice badly.

Hi there, im from California and I am 19F but by the time I plan to move out, I will be freshly 20. I could go on and on about the way my parents behave but that would make this post incredibly lengthy, more lengthy than this already will be, and I want to get to the point. That being said, I will answer any questions in comments that may help add context. For a general overview, both my mom and dad have strong narcissistic tendencies and want to trap me in this house with them forever. They claim its just because they hate that I am growing up and don't want to let go of me but it feels like it is more than that.

They control and dictate everything. They dont let me go out, they tell me everything is dangerous, they hate my boyfriend because they didnt choose him for me and theyve tried to arrange boyfriends for me, they don't let me drive, and they show extreme defensiveness anytime I try to be independent. They will swear, yell, and degrade me during these moments and my dad will also threaten physical violence against me, though neither of them has never actually laid hands on me. I grew up very sheltered and did not learn how to do very basic things until later in life, and I am embarassed about that. For example, I didn't know how to use a toaster until I was 16 years old or use a house key also until I was in my teens. This is just a very basic, general description of the kind of people they are.

Im not in college and in HS I was in a homeschooling program. I have a part time job that pays decently for my situation. Its my first job and Ive been working about a year. I do not help bills or rent, which may be wrong on me and I do feel like Im a spoiled brat for that but I do buy things like groceries or other general supplies for our household, I also give my parents gas money if they need it. We do struggle financially as only my dad works. My mom hasnt worked in 15-17 years because the store she worked at got robbed while she was there. Thats my money/work situation

As for moving out, I have an extremely loving and supportive 19M boyfriend who is genuinley the best thing to ever happen to me. Me and him have been together a little over a year. My parents hate him because they believe he doesnt treat them with 'enough respect' even though he tries his hardest to make them like him. When hes not with me, theyll call him things such as gay or will make fun of him for how he dresses or his career path (he wants to be an author.) Despite this, he has stayed with me and loved me. Im insanely grateful to have such an amazing man in my life. He still lives with his mom and siblings but they are quite fond of me and want me to live with them.

I, personally, would love to live with them. However, you may see why I am terrified to move out. God knows how my family would react. It wouldnt be well. My bf does live an hour away so it wouldnt be suoer easy for them to track me its just I dont know how to navigate this. Im also worried because I have a cat and a bearded dragon and idk how to move them.. and I also have an 11 year old sister who loves me and grandparents who love me.. This is a very new choice I have made and I am looking for any advice to discuss with my bf and his family. I also feel its important I mention, I do not plan on forming a co dependence on my bf, that would be awful and I know the ultimate goal in this is for me to learn to be free, though I will be free with him. I just need advice.

Asking Advice wanting to move out but scared I'll upset my parents

so basically I (22F) live with my sister (28F) my mom (51F) and my dad (62M)

things have always been bad, my mom is an alcoholic and hates me more than anything and my dad defends her behavior at every turn, recently my mom decided she never wants to speak to me again means I am no longer able to go downstairs to eat (things have become violent as well)

I have two friends who are desperate for another roommate and I want to move out so bad, I just wanna bring a few things that I own and leave my other stuff in my room at home

I just want to move out for a few months to see how things go and how my family and I improve

but I'm so scared they won't let me come home if something happens, my mom has tried multiple times just this month to kick me out, I love my parents a lot and I'm so scared of disappointing them, I've brought up moving out before and my mom just threatened me.

idk how to move forward, my parents sheltered me from everything including my education (I wasn't allowed to go to school and my parents never taught me anything) ,I'm not allowed to learn how to drive or be out of the house past 4-5 pm unless I'm at work

maybe someone smarter could help me figure this out

Asking Advice Moving Back Home at 30...Is That Normal?

I just turned 30 in November and have had a ROUGH 2026. I was forced to resign from my very high-paying job that drained my mental health, got a job for barely above minimum wage but my mental health is much better. But now, my rent increased to something crazy and I can't afford it. I can barely afford the rent now on this new salary and my normal bills. I haven't been paying my credit cards because I simply can't.

Part of me wants to look for a cheaper place, but I feel like I'll just be delaying my financial consequences if I do so. My mom told me I could move back home. I would give her a small amount of money for rent or I would take over a bill or two for her. While the financials make sense, I'm worried about how being on my own for so long to then moving back home will affect me mentally.

I also feel like I'll be returning home with my tail between my legs. Lost my high-paying job, lost my apartment of 6 years, in credit card/student debt. Seems like a failure.

Has anyone had to move home after being on their own? If so, how did you mentally handle it?
