Every Halloween, we hear the same handful of songs. Thriller, Ghostbusters, Monster Mash… you know the ones.
I wanted to do something different.
I dug through my music collection looking for tracks that feel like Halloween without necessarily having anything to do with Halloween. Music that’s eerie, unsettling, mysterious, sinister, playful, or just plain weird.
The result is a nearly three-hour mix of 55 tracks spanning ambient, dubstep, techno, IDM, experimental electronics, horror movie soundtracks, and plenty of stuff that doesn’t fit neatly into any genre.
You’ll hear artists like Djrum, Shackleton, Nicolas Jaar, Matthew Dear, Flying Lotus, Ben Frost, Loefah, and many others.
I deliberately kept things spacious. There are plenty of danceable tracks, but this isn’t intended to be a dance mix. I made it for people to put on while handing out candy to trick-or-treaters, creating an atmosphere for a haunted house, or just spending an evening surrounded by strange sounds.
Of course, like all my mixes, it was recorded live. No editing together a playlist. Just me finding ways to connect 55 very different pieces of music into one continuous journey.
I’m curious whether the Halloween feeling comes through for other people, especially with some of the less obvious selections.
