Announcement Stop public TIF money for the Whole Foods project on Brooks Street

A developer wants Missoula’s TIF money to help build a shopping center anchored by Amazon-owned Whole Foods. TIF should back local businesses, not national chains. Tell the MRA board to deny it. Peter Christian is a blight upon Missoula

Yes I know he's a Missoula Legend. Yes I know all he's done for the Griz Football Program. I understand he was friends with Paul Harvey and became an amazing person after discovering Christ later in life. I know he's a True Missoulian, and he's helped kids with cancer and was the keynote speaker at many charity events.

But his radio show and affiliated website proclaim to be unbiased, yet constantly parrot hardcore right-wing talking points in innocuous ways. His call-in radio show for example is portrayed as a platform to engage with our representatives, yet his screeners only allow very specific calls to get on air. He has a definite slant, and this and the previous election cycle I feel it's become more nefarious as he seems to actively try to frame himself as an engaged centrist while only endorsing right-wing talking points.

He's charismatic, a Griz Legend, a Really Good Guy with a Great Wife, but his radio show, affiliated news website, and general ideals are against what I believe Missoula stands for.

Fuck Peter Christian and this dollar-store Joe Rogan act he's going for

High Beams?!

Maybe it's just me, but in the last year and a half or so I can't help but notice how many more people drive around town with their high beams on. I know headlights have gotten brighter and people mount them wrong so they're angled too high, but I know they are using high beams because all four lights are lit up. The 2 low beams and then the 2 high beams too.

How can they be so oblivious?! Blinding other drivers, creating a safety problem for everybody. especially when there's a light on every dashboard that says yo dumbass the high beams are on.

Several years ago I had a friend of mine that was being high beamed by someone and she made the mistake of flashing her high beams back as a signal, and it was Missoula PD. She was ticketed promptly. It seems like an entrapment to me. But nonetheless I'm hesitant to high beam these idiots because I'm afraid it might be a cop. Am I the only one that sees this notable change in Missoula drivers? If you need high beams to drive around town where there's all sorts of ambient light street lights etc you shouldn't be driving at night okay. Thanks for listening to the rant. ✌️

Question Handyman/Contractor Question

I’m looking at starting the process of getting my independent contractor license and starting my own Handyman/Construction business after working for years under my boss who is getting ready to retire.
Here is where I would like some input from the Missoula area community here on Reddit and any input would be greatly appreciated.

What types of services would you all be looking for and be wanting to hire someone to do work in and around your home or business?
I’ve done everything from concrete and roofing to painting and site cleaning. It’s the old adage of Jack of all trades but master of none.

What would be a reasonable cost per hour you would pay someone to come do the little tasks and honey-do list items that you never seam to get around to?
With insurance on my end, I was thinking around 45-60 an hour or preset packages for 2,4,8 hours that are fixed. I want to be affordable to everyone and not overcharge for the work getting done. Life is expensive as it is.

I’ve been in the field of general contracting for years but just as an employee and the prospect of going and doing it myself is a huge next step. If there is anything else that would be of help to me that anyone can think of I would love to hear it. Thanks everyone!

Get Your Damn Flu Shot Cause This Sucks

Our house is struggling. Intermittent fever, sweating, chills, elevated HR/BP, chest congestion, nagging dry cough, and it won't go away. Wake up multiple times a night soaked/freezing. Been over a week today. Get your shot.

AND. If you're sick, stay the hell home if you have sick leave, for the love of God. No one gets a hero award for working sick if they don't have to.

Accident

If you're stuck in traffic right now going from Lolo to Missoula, there was a bad three car accident on the S Curves. From what I could see, two cars were flipped

Be careful when driving. The S Curves are no joke

Is this funny?

I recently stayed a couple of days at this hotel and on the morning of checkout I spotted these hotel pieces of paper to write on. I wanted to leave the cleaning staff a tip. I also decided it would be nice to leave a thank you note as well. Once I was about to jot my little thank you down I saw the question that the paper had printed on it "How will you seize the days?". Now I thought that is actually a really good question and I took my opportunity to at least seize the morning. I wrote two different versions before I landed on my final draft. When I was done I re-read it and thought it was funny, but that's a biased opinion and I would like to see what other people think. Is This Funny? So what do you think? And can we make this expand to others. What is something you did that you thought was funny, but others might disagree? I hope to hear from you. Tell us about the thing you did or saw and thought it was funny, but others may disagree with you.

Do Affordable Vets even exist anymore?

Post image
20 Upvotes

Does anyone have recommendations for local Veterinarians they like, that are reasonably priced? Like a check up/vaccine update running less than $100-$150, or at least below $200?

Also willing to take recommendations for vets in the surrounding areas.

I love the vet I’ve taken my dogs to for over a decade, but their prices are crazy now.

Thank you!!

Wild Game Processing Education

Post image
293 Upvotes

Missoula Hunters! Do you have an animal hanging in your garage? Do you know someone who does? Do you have any idea how to start processing it? Have you cut up your own meat before and just need a little bit of instruction? Hi. My name is Heather and I'm here to help. I'm a butcher. I have 25+ years of experience butchering for myself and for two years at H&H Meats. I teach classes through MUD every year and Venery in the past.

I have a passion for teaching people and I can help you learn what to do with your animal. I can teach you how to process from start to finish, quickly, efficiently and with less mess. I offer three different options:

1) I can skin/quarter/debone/clean/steak/grind/package everything for you.

2) I can do all the processing while you observe and ask questions. I'll walk you through everything I'm doing while I'm doing it.

Or 3) I grab a quarter, you grab a quarter and we process the animal together. You learn hands on.

Payment will be determined within your means. I believe this education/service should be available to you in your community no matter your means. DM me here or if email is better (heather.graham8765@gmail.com) and let's see what we can work out. You could be butchering your own animals with confidence in no time!

Question What are the best and worst things about Missoula?

I'll start.

Best things (in no particular order):

  1. Pretty decent and free (!!) public transit, which is honestly quite remarkable
  2. Beautiful scenery and relative proximity to national parks/nature sites
  3. Ideal size for people who don't like big cities or extremely small towns
  4. Pretty good museums
  5. Decent environment if you're a young student attending UM

Worst things:

  1. Very few economic opportunities/jobs actually local to the area
  2. Widespread suspicion and sometimes straight up hostility to outsiders
  3. Diminishing sense of community, especially compared to the late 2010s and even early 2020s
  4. Many social cliques in this town usually based on socioeconomic status who don't really communicate with each other
  5. The artsy hipster vibes and aesthetics of previous decades that once made Missoula pretty great and unique are gradually fading away

Seeing what you guys think.

Kid Friendly Halloween Events

Any parents or others have the scoop on fun Halloween stuff to do with your kid on Halloween proper in addition to trick or treating. Specifically a Kindergartner. I'm aware of Field of Screams and the Free Cycles haunted house but am unsure if these would be age appropriate for a 5year old. Any and all leads, suggestions, plugs, welcome and appreciated!

Missoula County Data Center Study Findings

In July, Missoula County initiated a data center zoning study, discussing the impacts of the AI data center at the Bonner Mill.

The study found a range of potential impacts including substantial electricity demand, direct and indirect water consumption and potential water quality impacts, and air quality impacts from backup generation and cooling systems.

The Broadview data center is projected to use 1,100 MW of power and Quantica filed for grid interconnection capacity of up to 7,235 MW. This is larger than the demand of all NWE customers in Montana.

Infrastructure for AI data centers needs multi-million dollar upgrades to accommodate a single facility, which drives up our energy bills. Facilities rely on cooling systems that consume millions of gallons of water per day, creating a significant resource drain on groundwater.

Additionally, equipment at data center facilities has the potential to create noise pollution that negatively impacts nearby residents, businesses, and wildlife.

The Montana 2025 Right to Compute Act gives data centers rights with regulations being assessed on strict scrutiny.

The county found that the one-year moratorium was justified, but they can’t rely on zoning regulations to stop data center development indefinitely.

Missoula County will present the data center study on Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 6 p.m. at 1101 South Ave W, Missoula County Fairgrounds, Home Arts Building.

Question Hey Fellas! Looking for a roommate!

Is anyone looking to for a roommate? My last one just moved in with her boyfriend and now I have a full empty room in this two bed, one bath apartment. Aside from working and hanging out with friends I’m mainly just here to sleep! So I stay out of my roommate’s way but I’m always happy to socialize. Whether you’re minding your own or are somehow more social than I am then this could be a good place for you. $1,750/month approx. rent with utilities on the side. Split down the middle is roughly $875. My roommate moved out a week ago so this week I’m officially signing her off the lease if anyone wants the sake of conveniency while paperwork is in play, we can have this ball rolling super quickly. Feel free to DM me or comment for further questions.

Sick and tired of the DNC gaslighting

Post image
0 Upvotes

Get this! She’s not a Democrat! So vote for the Independent, who’s actually the Democrat! Takes all of a few seconds to go to her website, and see her forcefully defend legal access to abortion. People are entitled to not like abortion, but think it should be legal.

Fellow liberals, if the last two national elections aren’t enough to make you realize how the oligarchs are controlling the DNC and your choices, then I honestly don’t know what will. They’re flaunting their control over you right now, gaslighting you into voting for their chosen, controllable and compromised candidate. So that the status quo can go unchallenged, and they can remain the parasites they are.
