Stardom seemed the most likely path after Lewis helped the Twins end their 18-game postseason losing streak and earn their first playoff series win in 21 years in October 2023. But his 2024 and 2025 campaigns were marred by injuries, preventing Lewis from sustaining his breakout.

When he was finally healthy two years later (Lewis played a combined 140 games between the majors and minors in 2026), Lewis wasn’t the same hitter.

His pitch selection played a significant role. In 2026, Lewis ranked No. 100 out of 135 qualified hitters with a 36.2 percent out-of-zone swing rate. He made contact on only 52.6 percent of those pitches, which ranked No. 119 out of 135.

Three years earlier, Lewis swung at 32.6 percent of pitches outside the zone but made contact on 63.9 percent of those pitches.

Whereas in 2023 he finished with a .920 OPS and belted four more homers in the playoffs, Lewis posted a .667 OPS this season.

“That’s natural when your numbers aren’t what you want them to be,” Twins manager Derek Shelton said. “You have a tendency to go out and get pitches. I don’t think it’s to the point of concerning, but I would say it’s one place he has been a little more aggressive.”

Assessing his season in late September, Lewis made it clear he recognizes the issue.
