New Mod Guideline - If you don't have anything nice to say..

I'll try and keep this short - there's been a marked increase in generally abrupt and abrasive comments here on the /r/mikrotik and it's not what we're about or what we want to see happening. Many of these have been due to content that is or is seen to be incorrect or misleading, so..

If you're posting here:

Keep in mind none of us are being paid to answer you and the people who are, are doing so because they want to help, or you've posted something so incredibly incorrect they can't help but respond. Please do yourself a favor by collecting all the information you can before posting and make sure to check the MikroTik wiki first - no one wants to spoon feed you all the information.

If you're commenting here:

  1. If you don't know the answer - don't try guess at it; and if you want to learn about it yourself then follow the thread and see what others say, or you know.. read the wiki and try it out in a lab.
  2. If you disagree with another poster, try to explain the correct answer rather than a one sentance teardown that degrades into a thread full of name-calling.

As a result of this I've added a new rule & report option - you can now report a comment with the reason being:

It breaks /r/MikroTik rules: Don't post content that is incorrect or potentially harmful to a router/network

If we agree we'll either:

a) Write a correct response

b) Add a note so that future readers will be made aware of the corrections needed

c) If the post/comment is bad enough, simply delete it

I'm open to feedback on this as I know people feel strongly about timewasting and I'd like to hope this helps us continue to self-moderate without people blowing up at each other.

Mikrotik CCR20041g-12s+2xs has 5GB memory?

I opened one a few days ago to take pictures od the damage that happened in shipping (it was decommed and someone shipped it back to me with the SFPs inside, and yeah, it's busted now)

I was curious and started looking at the board, and noticed there are 5x SDRAM chips.

They are NT5AD512M16A4-HR Chips. Each of them are 1GB in size (512Mb x16)

Where'd the other 1GB go? It's not like routerOS boots with 0% memory usage, so i wouldn't think it's a separate 1GB chip solely for OS? Maybe for switching?

EDIT: TIL how ECC works, and why the 5th chip exists :) thanks reddit

Also if you're curious, here's the damage. Don't ship a device with SFP modules in it, ever.

question about 2.5 Gbps fiber and Mikrotik SFP

• Upvotes

The hEX S (2025) supports a 2.5G SFP. Mikrotik sells the corresponding HS-85DLC05D SFP module. But there's sparse documentation about this.

Can I do the following?

  • hEX S (2025)
  • HS-85DLC05D running at 2.5G
  • multimode fiber
  • HS-85DLC05D running at 2.5G
  • CSS610-8G-2S+IN

Is it easy/possible to configure the CSS610 for 2.5G SFP operation?

It's strange that Mikrotik announced 2.5G but didn't make it perfectly clear how to do it. Speeds of 1G and 10G are the industry standard, so if Mikrotik is doing something non-standard, they should clearly document it.

How to segregate Mikrotik services?

What’s the best way to segregate Mikrotik services?

For example, in my scenario it acts as an AP to bridge WiFi and ether1 for a “hostile” network. I would like to only allow management over a private network on ether5.

While I see I can add an acceptable IP range to each service, I’d like to go one step farther so the web interfaces doesn’t even show up on a port scan from the hostile network?

I feel like between some combination of multiple routing tables and/or VRFs, this should be possible but can’t quite figure it out.

Or is the only real option iptables rules?

Help with minimum purchases to achieve setup

I would appreciate some help with minimum purchases I need to make.

I have multiple computers.
- One separate machine is just a home server (git server, file server, matrix server etc.).
- One separate machine is just a AI machine (running local models).

What I am planning to purchase:
- Router "Mikrotik RB5009UG+S+IN" (oh baby)

What I would like to achieve:
1) private subnet in my house.
2) able to plugin in a VPN into router (I understand this is possible with above router).
3) able to process incoming requests from inside and outside my subnet, and route them to respective machine.
4) able to have all my machines communicate with one another within the subnet, and select devices outside the subnet.
5) The above, and very Secure (keys, encryption, etc.)

I would definitely like to play around with RouterOS and any other OS Mikrotik have.
I just want to get a minimum setup, and then play around with things (launch some containers on the router, etc).

What I would like to know:
1) What Mikrotik Access point should I purchase? I only need it to cover 1 room. I do not need to be blasting my house. It would have maximum 5-10 devices connected to it (LAN party).
2) Do I actually need to purchase a Switch? (I feel dumb asking this question, but it seems overkill to me). What switch should I purchase? I just want something that will last as I grow this project.

I do not expect to be running anything extremely heavy duty, streaming data-wise.
Which is why I am asking particularly about the switch.

No enterprise needs, but I really do want to be able to interact/configure all the layers of the OSI stack.

Pure Speculation: RB5009 or Hex-Pro?

Currently running a hap ac2 as my main router. I'm looking to upgrade and am also revisiting my WiFi setup with an eye towards going with MT or Ubiquity AP's. I've purchased the 5009 and was preparing to switch over, then I saw the pamphlet on the Hex-Pro and now I'm wondering if I should wait and get one of those. This will be for Home Office use, with currently a 1.5G WAN connection and about 40 or so LAN devices connected to a MT switch. I realize that we are heavily in the speculation phase with regards to price, availability etc., but any thoughts on waiting and has anyone heard anything about potential NA release dates and pricing for the Hex-Pro?

[Pending] RB2011UiAS-RM Variations?

Thumbnail

From what I can tell, it seems that the MikroTik RB2011UiAS-RM has two variations for the same hardware: one with a USB Type A port, and another with a USB Micro-B port.

Any idea why this is, and why the two hardware versions? Surely it's cheaper in the long run to not change trivial hardware components like this, especially after manufacturing started?

hEX Refresh for router at vacation property

Hello, we have an RB5009 at home, with VLANs, LAGs for the NAS systems and so on. It has been very reliable and a great ongoing learning experience. I'm considering the hEX Refresh for a second property, rather than deploying the EdgeRouter Lite that our RB5009 replaced.

The second location currently has a Rogers Cable modem (XB7 at 300Mbps), but that will be bridged for the reworked setup with a Ubiquiti UAP-AC-Pro for Wi-Fi. The infrastructure is simpler than the home network, with fewer phones, computers and IoT devices. Media devices use Back to Home and WireGuard apps to connect to the RB5009 for the media server, and I have access to the rest of the network; that has worked quite well so far. However, I'd like to clean up the system and use the router for the VPN link, adding VLANs for IoT and guests while automatically filtering connections to the home network as needed. The 300Mbps connection is more than adequate for the location, but it may get a speed increase based on whatever deal is available at renewal.

TL:DR - Is the hEX Refresh suitable as a router for a vacation home in conjunction with an RB5009 at home?

WINBOX / MIKROTIK FOR ANDROID / IOS

Post image
32 Upvotes

I have been using this application for a long time, I don't think there are any problems with this application, but the appearance is a little less pleasant to use for a long time.

Is there a way to remotely control a router with an Android / IOS device?

What I hope is something like the Winbox application, because my workplace doesn't provide access for remote webview on the router device, so it can only be accessed via the application or Winbox on the PC.

How difficult is it to use the hAP be³ Media?

I'm no network expert. I have messed with DD-WRT in the past, but there wasn't a ton of help with setting up VLAN/VAPs so ended up just giving up and using a free router from my ISP. The be3 looks like amazing hardware though for the price. I have been thinking about getting a Dream Router 7 or an Express 7 as i seem to be having bufferbloat issues with my ISP router while gaming causing lag spikes. I saw that the Unifi stuff is limited to 300mbps only when using smart queues and stuff to help with bufferbloat issues and my internet connection is 500/25mbps. So my question is how hard would it be for someone who isn't an expert to set up the be3 with a VLAN/VAP, ad blocking and encrypted DNS? Are there in depth guides to do this kind of stuff with RouterOS like there are with the Unifi stuff? (Video guides would be even better) or would i pretty much be on my own with zero help like with DD-WRT?

Looking for a router update from MikroTik RB951G-2HnD

Hey everyone! Non-IT guy here, so I could use some advice.

I work in a small office where we've been dealing with really slow and sometimes unstable internet. After some troubleshooting with AI, we suspect our current router (MikroTik RB951G-2HnD) might be struggling to handle the internet coming and the number of connected devices, so we're considering upgrading it.

Here's our setup:

  • Around 10 computers connected via Ethernet and Wi-Fi.
  • 10 smartphones connected to Wi-Fi throughout the day.
  • Mostly basic office tasks: web browsing, Google Docs, emails, and Zoom meetings.
  • Nothing particularly demanding in terms of bandwidth.

I'm looking for recommendations for a reliable router that can comfortably handle this setup without slowing everything down. AI suggested MikroTik RB5009UG+S+IN

We don't need anything overly complicated or enterprise-grade, just something stable, reasonably priced, and capable of handling multiple devices at once.

Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

Would the ax3 be the best choice for the following?

I have a bit of return time left on the tp link be3600 router I bought when we got our fiber internet installed but thinking about switching over and creating vlans to segment our network and add a vpn. Was wanting to see what everyone would recommend.

Internet speed is 1 gig fiber. Just 2 adults at home

We ran 6 cat 6 cables to keystone plates to 3 locations to future proof.

1 work from home workstation

2 gaming PCs

3 gaming consoles

Reolink home hub, doorbell, and 4 cameras (probably will switch these out eventually and run poe)

Kwikset Halo lock

Sensi thermostat

My Q garage

B hyve wifi hose timer

Looking at putting everything into a server rack to centralize it and for now take an old gaming PC and run a home server in the basement so might need an access point.

Trail-Camera Batteries

Wal-Marts near me have been putting external Trail-Camera battery packs on clearance for $10-$20. I grabbed one that's 3000mah/11.1Wh, has a solar panel, daisy-chainable 2+ to get more capacity, 12v output with a standard 5.5 barrel tip and so far it's been a great pairing for working with Mikrotik especially in the field/mobile/etc.

Mikrotik RB951Ui- 2HnD

Post image
30 Upvotes

Hello everyone, I recently performed a hard reset on my MikroTik router and used Netinstall to restore the operating system. During the process, I accidentally installed the Long-Term 7.23.8 version instead of the Stable version.
The router boots up and everything functions properly, with one major issue: every time the router reboots, the wireless (Wi-Fi) interface stays disabled. It refuses to start automatically on boot. To get the Wi-Fi working, I have to log in via WinBox and manually enable the wireless interface each time. What could be causing the wireless interface to default to "disabled" after a restart, and how can I fix it so it stays enabled permanently?

rOS v7 Capsman is not good for wifi.

Post image
0 Upvotes

I build a wifi network for my home.

Im using wifi-qcom-ac package on hapac2 routers. ros 7.

AP are connected to capsman. They both select the same channels for 2.4Ghz and are -76db range apart.

This causes hella stickiness and bad roaming. Any tips on how to fix this...

[Pending] Using hardware license in Mikrotik CHR is possible and legal?

For learning I create on Proxmox lab dedicated to learning Mikrotik. I have CHR, but with limit 1Mbit. Is it possible using RB3011UiAS license (I paid for this device and I use it at home) to bypass this? Main reason is to try how settings can affect copying by Samba large files. Is it legal as I paid for hardware and I want use it for learning only or I should avoid it to not lost hardware licence?

How to list a Mikrotik router on eBay?

Trying to list a hAP be3 lite but the system keeps refusing citing the new stupid law telling me it's a national security threat. I included the FCC number, listed it under Enterprise and avoided any mention of "router" but no luck. It seems this is automated (or AI). Anyone have any experience with this?

RouterOS 7.25 broke my OpenThread Border Router container on a hAP be³ (exit 127). Here’s what happened and how I fixed it

Posting this in case it saves someone a few hours.

Setup: hAP be³ running the official openthread/otbr image (arm64) as a RouterOS container, using the built-in Thread radio passed through as /dev/ttyACM0. It’s the border router for my Home Assistant Thread network (Matter-over-Thread sensors, lock, lights and others).

Symptom: After upgrading to RouterOS 7.25, the container wouldn’t start: exited with status 127. The image hadn’t changed; the log said skip importing same version.

Diagnosis

With logging=yes on the container, the actual error showed up:

-c: 1: exec: /init: not found

My old config had:

entrypoint=/bin/sh -c "sysctl -w net.ipv6.conf.all.forwarding=1; exec /init"
cmd=-c "rm -f /var/run/otbr-agent.pid /var/run/dbus/* && exec /app/etc/docker/test/docker_entrypoint.sh"

7.25 now appends cmd to entrypoint, Docker-style. Since sh -c "string" treats everything after the string as positional args, my cmd was silently ignored and only exec /init ran. The official otbr image has no /init. My guess is that older versions picked one or the other, which is why it used to work.

Gotcha #1: 7.25 argument parsing

I tried to fix it by moving everything into a single quoted string, and ran into the way 7.25 splits arguments. From what I observed, everything before an escaped quote becomes one argument, spaces included:

  • cmd="-c \"...\"" turned into the args "-c " and "...". Result: /bin/sh: 0: Illegal option -
  • entrypoint="/bin/sh -c \"...\"" turned into "/bin/sh -c " as the binary name. Result: execvp /bin/sh -c : No such file or directory

The fix: stop fighting the quoting and use a script on the mounted volume:

/file add name="usb2/apps/otbr/otbr-data/start.sh" contents="sysctl -w net.ipv6.conf.all.forwarding=1\nrm -f /var/run/otbr-agent.pid /var/run/dbus/* /run/rsyslogd.pid\nrm -rf /var/lib/thread\nln -s /data /var/lib/thread\nexec /app/etc/docker/test/docker_entrypoint.sh\n"
/container set [find name=app-otbr] entrypoint="/bin/sh" cmd="/data/start.sh"

Neither argument has spaces, so there’s nothing for the parser to mangle. It should also survive future parsing changes.

Gotcha #2: the “lost” Thread network

After the container started, ot-ctl state said disabled and ot-ctl dataset active returned Error 23: NotFound. Don’t form a new network at this point. You’d get a new network key and have to re-commission every device. Also avoid reloading the OTBR integration in HA until it’s sorted.

The dataset wasn’t actually gone. My old setup kept the OpenThread settings in the /data mount, but the stock entrypoint uses /var/lib/thread/, where the agent had created a new, nearly empty settings file with the same name (41 bytes vs. 249 for the real one). The rm -rf /var/lib/thread + ln -s /data /var/lib/thread lines in the script above fix this. Back up the .data file first.

Gotcha #3 (minor): a stale /run/rsyslogd.pid in the persistent root-dir stopped rsyslog from starting. The container log then only showed the old syslog tail, which made it look like the agent was running when it wasn’t. That’s why the script removes it.

Result: the dataset was restored (same channel, PAN ID and key). The border router rejoined the existing partition as a child, since my mains-powered devices kept the mesh alive. br state showed running, and netdata showed the OMR prefix, the external route, NAT64 and SRP all published again. All devices came back without re-pairing.

Lessons:

  • Enable logging=yes on RouterOS containers; the real error is in the container’s output.
  • Keep your OpenThread settings on a mount, and keep a TLV backup of the dataset (ot-ctl dataset active -x) somewhere safe, like a password manager. With that you can restore the network on any border router.
  • Check your entrypoint/cmd before upgrading to 7.25 if you use shell-form commands with quotes.

EDIT (Oct 26): RouterOS wasn’t touched this time; I only updated the OTBR container to the new openthread/otbr:latest image. It went back to exit 127. Worth knowing if you used the fix above:

  1. Updating the container reverted its entrypoint and cmd to the original values (exec /init and all), so start.sh wasn’t being called anymore. The script and the Thread dataset on the /data mount were untouched. Re-applying entrypoint="/bin/sh" cmd="/data/start.sh" fixed it.
  2. On the first start with the new image, otbr-agent died with Init() at spinel_driver.cpp:87: Failure (couldn’t initialize the radio). Running it manually worked, and so did a plain container restart, so it looks like a startup race with the radio. I added a sleep 5 at the top of start.sh just in case. The new image also enables the Backbone Router service (Thread 1.4) by default, which is harmless.
  3. Set ignore-remote-image-change=yes so the image only changes when you decide, and re-check entrypoint/cmd after every update.

My container is named app-otbr with a veth-app-otbr interface, so I suspect it’s managed by RouterOS’s /app feature, and updating it re-applies MikroTik’s definition over manual edits. Not confirmed yet. Has anyone else seen this?
