Windows or another product Great naming, guys

Post image

Was looking through my recent updates, and thought "WTF is 'Windows App'?!" Turns out, it's Remote Desktop. Fantastic naming there, and keeping the branding clear and distinct, as usual.

Imagine how many people at microsoft are working on bs like this, actively making existing products worse. To whomever came up with this idea, the world would be a better place if you just retired and never ever returned to the workforce again.

55

u/Pigbin-Josh Mar 21 '26

They're not retiring. The old guys approaching retirement age are the ones that understand the principles of Human Computer Interaction, predictability, familiarity and consistency. It's the new guys desperate to justify their positions and the subscription model who have to constantly introduce BS changes as part of the 'Evergreen' strategy.

It's only gonna get worse, my friend.

On the plus side, I'll be retired.

u/FriendlyKillerCroc Mar 21 '26

Such bullshit. What evidence do you have that younger engineers don't understand HCI as well as the older ones?

14

u/sotos2004 Mar 21 '26

We're looking at the evidence mate .

3

u/Pigbin-Josh Mar 21 '26

Microsoft engineers, not all engineers. But I think the evidence is pretty plain to see?

Have a read of Joel Spolsky to see how old-school MS engineers designed things.

1

u/lasooch Mar 21 '26

Engineers understand it. Engineers are not the ones making the decisions.

11

u/brandarchist Mar 21 '26

I’m sure someone fought for it to be called Copilot Remote

1

u/lunchbox651 Mar 22 '26

Quite often its some chump in brand/marketing that comes up with the idea and everyone else finds out about it once the product has been rebranded.

That's been my experience working for software vendors for the past 12 years at least.

Youre insane. This is way better than the remote desktop client. This isnt the same thing as the RDP client. It's the client to remote access Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365. They previously had 2 separate clients. Now it's all in one and works for MacOS, Android, and iOS.

2

u/tomfiddle91 Mar 22 '26

Why were there different apps for the same functionality to begin with? And why not just continue with the well established rdp branding?

1

u/chaosphere_mk Mar 22 '26

It wasnt the same functionality. Agree "Windows App" is a bad name though.

1

u/jmpz11 Mar 22 '26

Hello slopbot

1

u/confusedsimian Mar 23 '26

Well it was a general RDP client until recently on Windows and still is on Mac.

1

u/chaosphere_mk Mar 27 '26

Not a general RDP client

1

u/confusedsimian Mar 28 '26

How do you mean? I could connect to any host I wanted to via RDP, a recent update on the Windows client stopped this and on Mac it still works as I used it to access VMs on my server

18

u/JustaFoodHole Mar 21 '26

At work we're having a hard time explaining what version of copilot we're talking about, which are all very different: Microsoft Copilot, Copilot Pro, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat, GitHub Copilot, Security Copilot, Copilot Studio, and there are Azure versions too.

The worst for me is "Visual Studio Code" and "Visual Studio" which are two completely different, incompatible Microsoft products.

8

u/deceze Mar 21 '26

Don't get me started on the mess that is their developer .NET framework stuff. That naming and versioning scheme is insane and changes with every version.

4

u/Polyxeno Mar 21 '26

OMG yes that is absolute madness!

2

u/FastHotEmu Mar 21 '26

In South American countries, the movie "Airplane!" was retitled "So... where's the pilot?" ("Y... donde está el piloto?")

So, where exactly is the pilot? why are they all copilots? It's not like it's letting me fly independently...

Elaine Dickinson: Oh, my God! The automatic pilot! It's deflating!

Steve McCroskey: Now, Elaine, don't panic. On the belt line of the automatic pilot there is a hollow tube. Now that is the manual inflation nozzle. Pull it out - and blow on it.

2

u/Round_Credit_5158 Mar 22 '26

Usually I just refer the first as Visual Studio and the latter as just "VS" Code. The abbreviation is very important and people seem to understand. But I agree with you though.

2

u/JustaFoodHole Mar 22 '26

Not in my org. VS Code is overwhelmingly popular so it's hard to explain that Visual Studio isn't even compatible with what they are doing.

2

u/Xer0_Puls3 Mar 25 '26

I don't even understand why they named it that, it's an Electron based IDE practically unrelated to Visual Studio. It's only slightly more related than JavaScript is to Java.

1

u/Supra-A90 Mar 21 '26

Oh yeah, how about Outlook. Is it classic, modern bs, is it outlook.com, is it email service.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '26

On Mac, it’s Windows App.app Microsoft are a bunch of morons.

50

u/SackCody Mar 21 '26

i won’t be impressed if they rename again to “Windows 365 Portal” or something similar with poo-pilot (like previously happened with Office 365)

8

u/Ziyaadjam Mar 21 '26

I still call it Office 365 anyway

7

u/artlurg431 Mar 21 '26

Just call it office

13

u/Icy-Astronomer-9814 Mar 21 '26

I prefer Microsoft copilot azure entra Intune office 365 windows apps

2

u/zoltan99 Mar 21 '26

I just call it office, because that’s what it is(/was, but functionally still is.)

1

u/National_Way_3344 Mar 23 '26

I call it Office 357. After all, they have an SLA.

2

u/BoltActionRifleman Mar 21 '26

They’ll just name it Copilot, that way they have as many people uttering the name as possible. If it makes no sense, they don’t care.

1

u/FastHotEmu Mar 21 '26

I would love to understand: what features does Word have nowadays that it didn't have back in the days of Microsoft Word 6?
For extra credit: what features does it have that it didn't copy from WordPerfect back in that era? Same question for modern Excel and Quattro Pro.

2

u/Jazzlike_Pride3099 Mar 22 '26

Copied from WordPerfect... ? I'd call that and raise with samna Ami pro

1

u/FastHotEmu Mar 22 '26

Ami pro ❤️

18

u/bankroll5441 Mar 21 '26

Even more on-brand is that the app is mostly broken. Riddled with bugs. Just look at the reviews for it

1

u/Unfair-Plastic-4290 Mar 21 '26

will you switch to something else?

1

u/bankroll5441 Mar 21 '26

I work in IT, we use Ninja One to remote into users computers and same for servers. Employees in other departments that use Azure VMs still use the old remote desktop app and will continue to do so until it either is a security risk or completely deprecated. If you're using AVD I don't think there's a way around the Windows app.

There are plenty of remote desktop/VNC alternatives though, including FOSS alternatives (TigerVNC works fine but Windows version is currently unmaintained). I use Linux on all my personal devices and don't have a need for remote desktop with those

1

u/alphan_video Mar 22 '26

One recommendation NEVER use tightvnc or else your company will be hack soon

89.19.15.42 seems like a fun PC

16

u/joujoubox Mar 21 '26

Good luck searching for help when that app inevitably breaks.

1

u/smoke-bubble Mar 21 '26

What if this was the main reason for naming it this way? XD

10

u/HTired89 Mar 21 '26

They called their revolutionary new quantum processor Major Anal. Microsoft can't name.

2

u/blue_screen_0f_death Mar 21 '26

Ettore Majorana was an Italian scientist in the 1930s. That's where the name came from.

9

u/smuckola Mar 21 '26

i just discovered this because i installed Fedora, which I read is best via RDP. So......

I got on the Mac App Store to download the Windows app for Mac from Microsoft to connect to Linux!!!!!!!

2

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '26

1

u/muttley9 Mar 21 '26

I use both. RDP to vnc to connect to my Kubuntu homelab. Don't want to be forced to download a program to access it.

2

u/eppic123 Mar 21 '26

VNC works natively with macOS. Just use vnc:// when connecting to the server.

1

u/muttley9 Mar 21 '26

Unfortunately I'm on Windows

8

u/how_do_change_my_dns Mar 21 '26

My fantasy is that microsoft execs get sedated for a week and a group of outside engineers come in to fix windows without business-oriented directions affecting the process. And every time the execs find out about how windows actually improved, they just get sedated again. And this goes on forever.

6

u/ptear Mar 21 '26

I thought that screenshot was saying Remote Desktop was added to the app store or something and that Windows App was a category or grouping.

Well.. the reviews are in: https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9n1f85v9t8bn?hl=en-US&gl=CA

6

u/cracked_shrimp Mar 21 '26

omg lmao, I read "Remote Dektop is now a Windows app" and I was like whats wrong with Remote Desktop being a app fr windows

who the fuck names thier app windows app

GUIZEZ!!!!!!! I just installed windows on windows

2

u/Ricketsiallpox Mar 21 '26

Same as Robinhood naming their credit card app as "Credit card" and now it's called "Banking". Whoever came up with this should be shown the door.

6

u/mrheosuper Mar 21 '26

Imagine spending billions on AI yet couldn't come up with better name

5

u/UKZzHELLRAISER Mar 21 '26

I've reverted my Android RDP app to 8.1.81.435 and disabled updates. That's the last version that doesn't have the "we're gonna enshitify the app and it's name!" notification every time you open it.

4

u/Ur-in-a-tor Mar 21 '26

I'm genuinely surprised that they did not slap "copilot" somewhere in the new name.

1

u/tyw7 Mar 21 '26

Windows Co-pilot. Where you can Co pilot your windows.

4

u/alehel Mar 21 '26

When I was trying to get the "Your Phone" app to work, I spent a lot of time trying to Google the issue. It was a nightmare to find anything online due to the apps name.

3

u/sovietarmyfan Mar 21 '26

Intern: "Hey guys! Why don't we just rename Remote Desktop to "Windows App"? That's going to be so much fun!!!

Comment Image

3

u/ka0us Mar 21 '26

I guarantee you this type of things comes from up top.

3

u/Dry_Quiet_3541 Mar 21 '26

Why do they do this shit, such brainless idiots, what was wrong with the name Remote Desktop, if there was some legal issue, atleast rename it to something appropriate. Wtf is windows app???, it’s more misleading now. Like USB implementors, they will change the name again and again. Creating more confusion. They complain that there is too much red tape in an old company, where is the red tape here? Nobody thought that this is stupid? Nobody said anything?

3

u/Fearless-Assist-127 Mar 21 '26

It will become a more appropriate name when you don't have Windows locally and just use the app as a "thin client" to connect to the machine they control in the cloud ...

2

u/No_Desk_4921 Mar 21 '26

I had to request this app to evaluate it vs. RDCMON and our I.T. (Fortune 500 company) refused it because they thought I didn't know what I was talking about. I shared pics and the app link but a year later, the ticket is still open and I still can't use it.

Believe it or not, some of us actually manage more than one server. Sometimes, hundreds and being able to group multiples of logins can be beneficial.

2

u/Consistent_Major_193 Mar 21 '26

Thank you for posting this. I couldn't find the name of the god damn RDP client because it's now named "Windows App". What the actual f..... Did your stunned AI come up with this brilliant idea microslop?

2

u/Financial_Key_1243 Mar 21 '26

Remember - Onedrive used to be Skydrive.

2

u/AnubisInp Mar 21 '26

They would likely keep it, they change it because Sky threatened to sue. Something similar almost happened to No man's sky.

2

u/404invalid-user Mar 21 '26

it's stupid the amount of people I know who though it was a windows VM they could run on their arm Macs, maybe that was it their installs were low.

2

u/GJensenworth Mar 21 '26

Back in the mid ‘90s, MS was working on set-top box software and named their project MMOSA, pronounced “mimosa”. When I pointed out to a team member that in addition to being a drink name, it is also the name of the “sensitive plant” that folds up when you touch it, they were not amused.

2

u/Darknety Mar 22 '26

Windows Copilot Remote 365

2

u/Acrobatic_Rip_669 Mar 22 '26

Please turn off/on your computer, then try Microsoft App, then Microsoft App (1) and then Microsoft App (2). Please reach your administrator if all the steps failed in anyway.

2

u/Overcast451 Mar 23 '26

The most significant and sensible change Microslop has ever made was to change the name from Scheduled Tasks to Task Scheduler.

Most significant and important change ever. When I seen that, I knew that Microslop was totally focused on what REALLY matters.

2

u/LordUglyI Mar 24 '26

Also annoying: the icon is almost identical to Parallels running Windows. I was constantly switching to the wrong app…

1

u/EmotionalScene3935 Mar 21 '26

is this to confuse winlator?

1

u/berfraper Mar 21 '26

Wait until they try to do what Facebook did and change their name to Copilot.

1

u/mrdirectnl Mar 21 '26

Yes, but it works great.

1

u/ch3mn3y Mar 21 '26

I don't mind it, but Windows Remote would be better. Althought if it does more, and remote access is only a part of its features, than Windows App IS better.

1

u/IamTrying0 Mar 21 '26

Misleading as this APP does more so not "replacement".

1

u/FastHotEmu Mar 21 '26

I have a Windows machine I access remotely from my Mac... whoever programmed this thing doesn't understand either platform. For example, there's no way to swap alt and command - it only allows a few shortcuts to be re-mapped. For power users who heavily rely on the Windoze key and alt, you keep hitting the wrong key combination.
A better solution would be to mimic what macOS's remote desktop does: capture the command key so that it can't be used to command-tab away from it, then allow the user to use it as a WIndoze key or alt key (add a setting) that way there's maximal flexibility for all workflows.
Another issue is that it always starts in full screen - although there may be a setting now to fix this, I haven't looked in a little while.

1

u/Round_Credit_5158 Mar 22 '26

And this why I've always used AnyDesk.

1

u/punk_petukh Mar 22 '26

Cool. I use it to connect to Linux so it fails with it default-by-name task.

1

u/jess-sch Mar 22 '26

It gets better: The Windows app can connect via RDP to a local Windows computer or Remote Desktop Services hosted in your own datacenter - except on Windows, where it can only access Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365.

1

u/confusedsimian Mar 23 '26

I find this absolutely baffling, why would you prevent users from accessing local machines but only on one of the client platforms?

1

u/Embarrassed_Prior632 Mar 23 '26

We cannot be serious!

1

u/LiquidCourage8703 Mar 23 '26

A while ago I had to configure VPN plus Remote Desktop on a colleague's MacBook, and I was confused because I couldn't find the Remote Desktop app, and it instead kept recommending a "Windows App" to me.

1

u/Lociee Mar 23 '26

Windows App sounds like an app for Windows that doesn't have an assigned name field

So in my headcanon Microslop are just so incompetent that they removed the name field of the app, and then whoever produced this announcement just called it whatever they saw it being called on the screen

1

u/BorderKeeper Mar 23 '26

WE ARE PIVOTING FOR REAL. ALL PCS WILL BE REMOTE. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT APP EVER. Repeat ad infinitum in hunderds of Microsoft board rooms...

1

u/Carlose175 Mar 23 '26

Isnt this like super old news?

1

u/DJJASPER21 Mar 24 '26

The RD app was great to work with. Responsive, great UI, good scaling of the video and a virtual mouse that worked great. The windows app sucks so hard. The UI is terrible and it’s super unresponsive, not to talk about the mouse/cursor movement.

It’s like these engineers woke up were like ‘Let’s fuck this beautiful app up’

Crazy.

1

u/ARPA-Net Mar 24 '26

so "winfows" is a remote desktop tool, and "copilot 365" is an office suite, and "azure ..something" is windows server and active directory amd exchange...

and how is the thing called i use to start chrome? "microsoft subsystem for azure" or what?!

1

u/TechnicalBen Mar 24 '26

Amazed they didn't call it Skype for Co-pilot. ;)

1

u/ZookeepergameSalty10 Mar 26 '26

Why does anyone have any faith left in Microslop. They basically signed their own elegy

1

u/IcWhyyy Mar 31 '26

And it still doesn't have external printer support while they EOL remote desktop.

1

u/Brotboxs Mar 21 '26

Why are people still using this bloatware os?

1

u/Rakkachi Mar 21 '26

Yeah, and its not the same app. Dif features and functions.
