It splits the update to parts pre and post the reboot, so they assume you want the update to be finished
In the past there was an option to update and shutdown
It updates, then reboots, then finishes update, then shuts down
Yeah, Windows updates are fkn stupid

But even if I chose update and shut down it still just restarted.
And after restarting it takes so long to finish.
I was peacefully using my PC then before I wanted to go to sleep I saved everything and closed everything. Then I opened the start menu just to see the update and restart and update and shut down. I chose update and shut down.
I didn't sleep that night because the PC was running for hours. So annoying.
And this happened to me many times.
Thank god I use Linux now.
PS: Normally I would apologise for my rant about how I hate Microsoft but that's literally the theme of this sub so...

I'm typing this comment from my linux actually, also abandoned windows

I only dualboot. But only because I need to work with Inventor (a 3D modeling software for mechanical engineering). And since I already need to use Windows I don't need to use Wine or virtual machines for other stuff like few games, etc.

u/AlexananderElek Aug 26 '25
Why didn't you just shutdown the computer again? You shouldn't have to do that, but still.
3
u/Xai3m Aug 26 '25
That's the thing. I had to wait 2 hours for it to finish so I could shut it down.

The problem is that they restart assuming that they entirely control the next boot so they can shut down after that.
But that isn't true. If I've installed Linux it'll be caught onto that and my shut down becomes reboot onto Linux.

u/YTriom1 Aug 26 '25
It happened to me in the past, I shut down the device innocently and slept to wake up finding debian running, back then I had a power problem so I disabled suspend in debian, so the PC was basically running the entire night.
It was updating and I thought it'll shutdown after finishing, didn't know it'll reboot, it took so long that I slept before it rebooted.

Fedora does the same that does exactly what windows should be doing: reboots into minimal environment, then restarts if needed, then finishes and shuts down completely.
No more "finishing updates" on first boot

u/YTriom1 Aug 26 '25
That only happens when you use these GUI tools
Using
sudo dnf updatedoesn't require rebooting, and any reboot is instant1
u/JonasAvory Aug 28 '25
Except that not what happens. It’s a common problem that windows does NOT shutdown after the restart, which is the entire point of this post is to

Isn't it wonderful that Microsoft lets me be a productive writer. I get an idea move to my computer to write and ...
Update....
Twenty minutes later...Reboot
Twenty minutes later - get rid of co-pilot and edge
Now have to install another update that magically appears....
An hour later start looking up Linux laptops and Libre writer software - using Firefox

Do they sell laptops that ship with Linux? I installed linux on my surface book but man it does not play nice with that 1060.
2
u/Owltiger2057 Aug 26 '25
Actually Lenovo has several that come fully configured with Ubuntu. Some even have Nvidia cards, lots of RAM and dual M.2 SSDs. Slightly pricy but I figure if they guarantee it works and its my first Linux system might as well take the easy path to learning it. At least if I screw it up adding things I can refresh it back to "factory" standard.

u/The_Exigent Aug 26 '25
Oh i see. My first linux system was a steam deck which is what really convinced me to try it out on an actual computer.

u/EisregenHehi Aug 26 '25
i'd actually recommend fedora, they also offer that on some laptops. it usually works even if its not an option and is way cleaner than ubuntu and more up to date in my experience

It does shutdown after the restart - the restart we see is part of the update process.
Anyway: MS still sucks balls (partly due to forced updates without any release notes)

update, restart, keep running until the battery dies.
technically it does shut down, but that's clearly suboptimal

Every time this happened to me, the shutdown occurred immediately after logging in after this restart ie:
0. Select update and shutdown
-
Updates
-
Restarts
-
Shuts down upon login

I was a PC user my whole life and now there’s no way in hell I’ll ever use anything but a Mac. When you want to use your Mac guess what… you can just use it! And when there’s updates guess what… you can choose when to do it and it’s not a 20 minute reboot fest with a stupid screen that says “Hello” like I swear to god Microsoft has either the most out of touch people guiding it or pure sadists.

I thought I was alone in this. So everyone gets a restart when they update and shut down?

I hate random hibernation aborts when 3AM. I need to make a circuit that blocks powerup once powered down and power button not pressed.

By now I just click Update & restart and then hold the power button at the BIOS stage to turn it off

I love it how people with I think the most default basic installation of Winshit have it working at least somehow properly (update, restart, shutdown- why the restart tho?), but with anything booting during restart, windows magically thinks "AH SO HE DOESNT WANT TO POWER OFF". Even IF ITS A LAPTOP IN MY FUCKING BAG, REACHING TEMPERATURE OF THE SUN BECAUSE OF THIS STUPID THING
