Debating Transferring
I’m a Freshman nursing major at Miami and if I’m being honest I’m not really enjoying my time here. I thought after the first few weeks it would get better, but it hasn’t.
Academically I think the school is great. I know the nursing program is a good one and super competitive, and I am extremely happy I got in. But I am really struggling socially. Especially as a black girl I feel like I just don’t fit in anywhere. I’ve tried clubs, going out to bars, going to events but I am still having no luck making friends.
Is not doing well socially a valid reason to transfer? Or will it get better if I give it more time and keep trying? The hassle of trying to get into another nursing program seems daunting and I don’t know if it’ll even be worth it. But I am so unhappy here.

Give it a chance man. I know it seems like frat boy central at Brick and the bars, but find some academic clubs and rec sports and you’ll find the people like you quick. You’ll probably just end up in the same position if you transfer. It’s a big shift at that point in your life. Best friends I met were beer league hockey and hiking

Yeah I really only joined career related organizations. But are clubs still accepting members this far into the school year?

Most clubs will always accept members if you reach out to them, social clubs are much better than academic clubs for making friends you can hang out with on a daily basis because you already share a common interest

Ima freshman. Before college i was thjnjing the same thing im a white guy but grew up poor and in lower income places all my life. Didn't think I would make very many friends because miami is known for richy frat bros type of people (not all of them). Ive made a good group of friends and what ive found out is your dorm absolutely matters all my friends are in my dorm and I find that the type of people in my dorm are diff then the basic miami people. If ur anything like me it might be harder but there are Def some people here that u would fit in with just join some clubs that frat bros wouldnt be interested in lol.
Also down to hang if u want to.

Stick it out. It’s a well known phenomenon that freshmen get terribly homesick or feel like they made a mistake in their college choice around October. You’ll find your social circle. It might not happen the first semester, but it will happen. From an old Miami grad RN, it’ll be worth it to stay. You’ve got this!

Consider the black sororities if you’re looking for more racially similar community?

Honestly me too! Sadly I didn’t get into the BSN program in Oxford but I’m planning on switching to Hamilton and applying there, if I’m being honest I haven’t made any friends here either. Whenever I go it’s mostly white people and as an Asian girl I can tell I don’t necessarily “fit in” with most groups and feel lonely most of the time but I still think many people here are nice. If you truly feel unhappy I would definitely recommend talking to your academic advisor and see what other options you have before you make any decisions.

Hey, old head here who graduated a while ago and completely forgot I was subscribed until this popped up.
Most people are saying give it some time, and yah, maybe give it a semester or two.
But looking back, almost all the friend groups I noticed almost all formed in the first couple weeks and for the most part were maintained for the full four-years, I was friendly enough with people, but I definitely wasnt part of anyone's friend group(example, I went to maybe a handful of parties i was invited to casually, but was never part of anyone's spring break group).
Functionally, it felt like everyone found "their people" within the first semester and that was that. After that, sure you can make friends, but i didnt find "my people" until summer AFTER I graduated before I had to leave for my hometown
Oxford is a small town, if you cant find friends in campus, you're not gonna have a whole city to get lost in and possibility find friends either.
I massively resent not getting to have "a college experience", and honestly my grades suffered because I was depressed and alone, and not having actual friends or fun was the driving factor.
Im not gonna say just give up and leave, but you'll know after 1 or 2 semesters if you're actually happy or if you're just "sticking it out".

As a black grad, I didn’t fit in at all there. It was really isolating. However, 8 years later, I have a great career, basically debt free and I still remain connected to the school especially with black Greek life.

I’m also thinking about transferring. I don’t think miami has the opportunities that i need for my future.
