Educational Aletai versus Muonionalusta

Post image
32 Upvotes

A common question in this subreddit is related to specimens labeled as Muonionalusta and/or Aletai. Here is a direct comparison between the two, and you can clearly see the difference in the Widmanstätten pattern for each type. Aletai is consistently described as Muonionalusta and there is no direct relationship between these two meteorites. I don’t know why these two are conflated as they are both highly abundant iron meteorites, but here we are. Hope this is helpful!

Does knowing who you're buying from actually matter when collecting meteorites?

Thumbnail independent.co.uk

I've noticed something interesting about private meteorite sales. People spend a lot of time discussing classifications and provenance but not nearly as much time talking about who selling the specimen.

I have compared a few privately offered lunar meteorites and it got me thinking about how much trust goes into these deals.

A specimen can have a valid classification in the Bulletin database and still raise questions. Is it part of the documented material? Can its ownership history be traced? Are the photos of the exact piece being offered? Then there's the seller's identity. I've been looking into verification methods like Kibu connections where both parties can confirm who they're dealing with before exchanging sensitive information. I can see the value in that but it doesn't establish ownership or prove the specimen is authentic.

That's what makes private collecting tricky. You can verify the person and still have doubts about the object. For those who've been collecting meteorites for years what matters most when buying from someone new?

Would you trust solid provenance and a recognized classification or would you still want independent testing before committing?

Question Good evening guys, I want to buy a Pallasite to make a ring for my girlfriend. Good idea?

My idea was to cut out the olivine gems and use put them into the ring. My concern is, do you think it would withstand fine? I'm afraid it might break apart easily when cutting it or during daily use. I've read olivine has same durability as quartz so I thought it would be fine. Not sure. I haven't seen jewelry with olivine stones. My other concern is how to buy a real one and not a fake? Thank you guys.

Regarding how will the stones get attached to the ring, my guy will do a perfectly work with gold, so no worries.

Question Meteorite jewelry?

Question: Where to find legit meteorite jewelry?

Visited a gem/jewelry store in Thailand and one of the vendors had a meteorite bracelet on his wrist and I asked if i could see it and when he handed it to me I was surprised by the weight. Apparently this bracelet was special because it only had 2 contents iron and soil? He showcased the magnetic property and I was hooked by the look and the weight. I was originally looking for an Obsidian bracelet but now I want what he had! He didn’t want to sell it 😭.

Before I Buy Quick authenticity check / vendor question for the collectors here

I found a Muonionalusta slab on eBay that looks amazing, but I'm hesitant because of the seller's feedback. The etching pattern looks right to my untrained eye, but some buyers left reviews saying they received fakes and were offered refunds to change their ratings.

It's one of the best-looking pieces I've seen in this price range, and I'm hoping to turn it into a custom art piece. Has anyone bought from them before, or should I steer clear? Thanks in advance for saving a beginner from an expensive mistake!

I wanted to share with this community meteorites pictures I took at Toulouse Museum of Natural History and Cité de l'espace.

First one is a large Saint-Aubin specimen that visitors can touch and the second one is a La Caille meteorite loaned by the French National Museum of Natural History.

Before I Buy I want to buy two chondrites: one with easy-to-see chondrules, and another with chondrules that aren't easy to see.

I want to learn how to examine chondrules so that I can evaluate things I find with some confidence. I've got a simple microscope that uses normal light. Any good recommendations what to buy and where to buy it?

I bought these pieces:

NWA 869

Aba Panu instead of NWA 11669.

Thanks for the recommendations!

Christmas present (I'm on top of things this year) for my son. Might have paid too much but anything else I should be concerned about? Thought it looked pretty legit but I'm a candidate for the Dunning-Kruger effect when it comes to this stuff.

The Villena Treasure was stolen in August. The thieves left behind its iron bracelet, which a 2023 paper says is very probably meteoritic iron

On 27 August 2026, thieves took most of the Bronze Age gold from the Museum of Villena in Spain, in about four minutes. Two iron pieces from the hoard were not taken: a bracelet (about 32 g) and a small cap covered in gold.

A 2023 paper in Trabajos de Prehistoria (Rovira-Llorens, Renzi & Montero-Ruiz, open access, CC BY) argues both are very probably meteoritic iron. The interesting part is the nickel: the bracelet's first sample (a flake of surface rust taken in 2007, measured in 2010) came back at 2.8% Ni, which was read as "too little nickel to be meteoritic iron". A 2013 resample a little deeper, under the rust, gave 5.33% Ni. The corrosion layer had been losing nickel. Ni/Fe and Ni/Co ratios then plotted with iron meteorites, and both pieces carry more than 400 ppm germanium.

Paper: https://doi.org/10.3989/tp.2023.12333

I made a video that goes through the theft timeline and the analysis, if anyone wants the long version: https://youtu.be/SFH7zXhmv-Q

Happy to be corrected on any of the geochemistry.

Inherited meteorite

My dad just passed away and I inherited this meteorite piece. Do I need to do anything to protect it from rust (or anything else?). It was just displayed in his living room, but I live in a much more humid climate than he did. Any suggestions appreciated.

Meteo-repair?

Well, I’ve found my long-lost slice of (probably?) Seymchan, and I’m afraid it looks as if it’s been in the bottom of a box for 25 years or so in accidental and un-climate-controlled storage in coastal Florida.

This is probably because it’s been in the bottom of a box for 25 years or so in accidental and un-climate-controlled storage in coastal Florida.

I want to send it off for whatever the heck can be done for it. Anyone here up for the challenge? If no, does anyone know of such a service?

Okay, thanks for your time. I hope everyone is doing well.

And, wow, does it ever look rough.
