I see a lot of media types are extremely low on him and consider him trade bait and a short term rental.
However, his stats have been solid and he passes the eye test for me.
I don't see a downside of keeping him? Historically we don't get marquee free agents. All the talk about 'timelines' also seems ridiculous. We have been a first round exit/lotto team for years. With the new lotto system there's no reason we won't try to be competitive. I don't see any reason to not be on board with Ty!
I think he fits the offense great and there's really no one else on the roster who looks like a real threat to take his spot in the starting 5 just yet. There's really no reason to make a determination on his future until this team has had a couple months to get into rhythm, though.
If he can continue to perform at a high level and his PNR game with Edey develops as it should, I think he could be an extension candidate even if he's older than the rest of the core. If Spencer or someone else emerges as a viable replacement, shop Ty at the deadline and see if there's anything worth considering. In the long run, he's not a priority for this team, but he'll be a strong contributor while core guys develop.
He was absolute dogshit until a couple of years ago, when he flipped a switch and became crazy good. He was a large part of the reason the Cavs had such a solid season. Since then he has had some bad injury luck, but his stats while he played last year had him near the top of the league in EPM.
It's worth giving him a year of starting to see if he can maintain the last 2 years of growth, and if he cant it doesn't matter anyway.
Given he's already 29 years old, is he someone we want to invest in long-term, or is he basically just a safe bridge QB for us until we draft/acquire someone better?
Its questionable if he's a long term peice or not just timeline wise.
Not that this is in anyway an indictment of his play, I think he is going to be great this season.
Imo there is an argument to keep him longterm, but I can see some teams that feel they are a Ty Jerome away from serious competition paying a hefty sum.
Lose one preseason game everyone flips. Bro has ridiculous numbers efficiency etc and b/c a winded edey didn’t play well it’s on him? I understand get edey the ball he’s dominat but Jerome out here doing budget all nba stuff and we wanna kick him to the bench…
I can't fathom the hate. Dude has done nothing but try to win games for us. Yeah maybe his pnr stuff can improve but I also don't think we really emphasize edey pnr because he's barely played in a year.
I feel like the idea is you'd be selling high on him, not that he's not good or that they're low on him.
He also has a player option for next year, which he would certainly opt out of if he has a good season. So how much would you be willing to pay him becomes the question. If you don't think a bigger contract and his age fit this timeline then trading him would make sense.
Yeah and maybe it works so well that they just hold onto him and he could be a good bridge pg for some young guy they draft. I don't really think there's a bad possibility no matter what they choose to do.
I've been a fan of his since college so totally happy with him being on the team but also understand there are always business decisions that have to be made at certain points
It's gonna depend on how the season goes early on I think.
He is 29. If the team is outperforming expectations and is healthy going into the ASG I think they would keep him and try to make a push at the playoffs.
If they are about where most people expect them to be, fighting for a play in spot, especially if he is also playing well, it would be foolish not to sell high. He otherwise does not fit the timeline of the team at all. He is a solid 4+ years older than most of the core roster.
Idk where takes like this began, but it’s not like the teams that win a championship have guys that are all the same age. It’s usually a mix of ages. If he’s good and fits the system, he’s worth keeping.
He seems to fit the Iisalo system quite well. He is suspect on defense but can light it up offensively. And, on the Cavs he was good in the big moments. When games are on the line it is important to have someone not afraid of the moment.
He is a winner to his core and has impacted every team he’s ever been on very positively.
He was a very good shooter in college but became a world class shooter in the NBA. He has always been a world class floor leader but obviously not an elite NBA athlete. He plays smart defense and positions well but you can blow by him for sure.
I’m a Grizz fan as long as he’s on the roster. I think he’s going to have a monster year.
I think he's going to be an all-star if healthy and he plays 28+ mpg. He has about an 1100 minute sample over the last 2 seasons when running the offense of being a 27+ point scorer on 62%+ true shooting per 75 possessions along with efficient playmaking. And it's an even larger sample if you count these most recent preseason games.
I said it before he played his first game for the Grizzlies last year that I think he's about to be the next Brunson in terms of going from a good backup to a star player, he has better metrics than Brunson did in Dallas (production during non-Luka minutes), the same metrics as Harden in OKC (production in non-Westbrook minutes), similar metrics to Haliburton in Sacramento (production in non-Fox minutes), and similar metrics to Reaves (production during non-Luka minutes).
I think we are obviously in a worse spot than any of those team situations though. But if he even comes close to those numbers as a full time starter I'm all in.
I'm very high on the team this season mainly because of Ty and Edey, though Edey has a much smaller sample of the level of play he had last season, but watching how he did it, there's good reason to think it's somewhat sustainable (except the sub-100 defensive rating part). And even if you apply a regression to Edey's play last season, his level of play was so unbelievably good that he would still be incredibly impactful even if you factor it down.
I think if he's healthy and plays enough minutes he will be.
Ignore the comparison (or don't), the point is the production itself. Just consider this production alongside what he did in Cleveland during non-Mitchell minutes and what he's been doing in preseason. He has a statistically significant sample of better than all-star level production, which is why I bring up his Cleveland numbers, last year's numbers, and mention preseason (but don't factor it as much).
He’s fine. Don’t love him. Point guard is the lowest-ceiling position on this young roster, even though Jerome is arguably our best offensive player right now.
If we can get picks for him, you know what ZK’s gonna do.
I just don't want him as the starting PG. He's better served as a flamethrower off the bench due to his defensive deficiency and his not looking to make passes. Dude's an efficient scoring machine though.
I have watched Ty Jerome since 2017 at UVA. He’s a leader and a winner. Zero fear. If he stays healthy, I think he’s an all-star. I will root for Ty anywhere he goes but I think Memphis under Isalo with this young team is a perfect fit.
I just remember a few games of him as a Warrior and I thought he was decent. These past 2 preseason games have suprised me and he looks like the best PG on the team by a mile. I love SPJ and the defense that he brings but im going with Ty and I see why we passed on Philon Jr
I don't care about value anymore, I want to watch fun, good basketball. Ty Jerome flops and whines to the refs constantly. He is very good, but he sucks to watch. I hope we can trade him for many picks or good players who are less gross
He's a bad defender and a score first guard who will dominate the ball. Seems like he will take away from the development of the core who will have to spend energy covering for him on defense while not getting many shots on offense.
If this team had a superstar PG so that Ty could be that bitl 6th man he'd be awesome but I'm not a fan of this current situation.
