This is all general advice, of course, but we get a lot of similar questions so see if yours is on here. It may point you in the right direction.
• ”What bug bit me?” There is no way for anyone to tell what bug bit you from a picture of the bite. (The only exception is a tick bite with the classic bulls-eye pattern.) Use antihistamines as directed on the package to help with the itching.
• ”Is my foot/hand/toe/etc broken?” Unless your bone is sticking out or your appendage is bent at an unnatural angle, we can’t tell if it’s broken. If you suspect a break, go get an X-ray.
• ”I ingested something I wasn’t supposed to/too much of something! What do I do?” Call poison control. In the US, their number is 1-800-222-1222.
• ”Do my genitalia look normal/weird/what is this thing on my genitals?" Please, unless you have a genuine medical concern, we do not wish to see your genitals. We're not here to identify random flaps, marks, or growths. Please direct these to your GP/PCP who can actually examine you. If you have a specific concern, consider making a text post, and we will let you know if a picture is appropriate/helpful.
• ”My foreskin won’t retract!” This is called phimosis, and is quite common. We send people over to r/phimosis for this because they have a wealth of information.
• ”Can one of you write me a prescription?” No.
• ”Help, there are big bumps on the back of my tongue!!” Please google “circumvallate papillae” and see if that’s what you’re seeing. They are normal anatomy.
• ”My period is overdue. What do I do?” First, take a pregnancy test. It doesn’t matter if you’re on birth control, just take one. If you are really and truly not pregnant, then you and your doctor should look for other causes.
• ”Is my poop normal?” Well you can post a picture if you really need to, but please do a google search first. Keep in mind that everyone gets diarrhea occasionally.
• ”Does this need stitches?” If you can see fat layers, then yes. When in doubt, you can post a picture EXCEPT for self-harm pics. Absolutely none allowed on this sub, no exceptions. However, if the injury is over 24 hours old, it is too late to get stitches.
• ”Can I private message you about my medical questions?” No. This violates rule 9.
• ”What do I do about my swollen tonsils with white patches?” Go get tested for strep throat. Manage any throat soreness with over-the-counter meds like throat spray, cough drops, or even herbal tea with honey.
• ”A huge clump came out during my period. What is it?” It may be a uterine cast, which is when a large piece of tissue comes out whole instead of breaking up into little bits. If this happens to you a lot, see your OB/GYN to make sure everything is going okay.
• ”Why is there blood when I poop?” There are many possible reasons for this, such as a GI bleed, inflammatory bowel disease, hemorrhoids, or anal fissures, to name a few. We recommend going to your doctor to investigate the cause. And we can’t tell what the cause is from a picture of your poop, so please spare us.
• "Does this ECG from my smart watch look normal?" While these features can be helpful in screening for some arrhythmias, they are not diagnostic. The most we can do it tell you whether or not you should go get a 12-lead ECG, which is diagnostic after a doctor interprets it. In short, we can give you an idea of what it is showing, but it is not an official medical test.
• ”I haven’t been around any bats but I found two little marks on me—do I have rabies??” No. You would know if you’d been exposed to a bat.

I have a ganglion in my left wrist that I’m getting removed soon, but on my other wrist I’m developing a similar looking bump. I was diagnosed with synovitis in the past on that wrist and am just wondering if it possibly has come back. I’m not 100% on it being a ganglion as it feels more dense than my genuine cyst. Anything helps!

6 days ago i fell off of a chair, hurting my back. 4 days ago i went to an amusement park and rode 5 rollercoasters bc i didn’t think the injury was that bad. 3 days ago i woke up with minor neck pain. wasn’t too bad but it was annoying because i couldn’t find any relief until i took 500mg of extra strength tylenol. 2 days ago the neck pain was worse when i woke up but some excedrin relieved the pain.
yesterday i woke up in 8/10 pain. talking, swallowing, walking, and moving my head at all made my neck pain even worse. i was sweating and shaking from the pain. decided i needed to go to the ER so i booked an uber. by the time i got to the hospital, the car ride had put my pain at a 9 and i was in tears. they took me back immediately and they gave me tylenol, toradol, and valium and ordered an MRI. the medication worked for about 4 hours before i had to ask for more because the pain was getting worse again.
the MRI came back normal so they sent me home and told me to take tylenol and ibuprofen on a cycle every 6 hrs (so i would be taking one of the 2 every 3 hours). when i woke up this morning my pain was only around a 5 so i thought that’s good, it must be getting better. but ive been taking the tylenol (1000mg) and ibuprofen (400mg) all day and its doing NOTHING for pain relief. it’s 10:30pm and my pain is a 6/10 which is still not as bad as yesterday but definitely worse than it was this morning and nothing i do is giving me any relief. i’ve also been using a heating pad which again isn’t doing anything for me.
i’m at my wits end, if anyone has any advice for me to get any type of relief im open to hearing it. turning my head still hurts, walking still hurts. i don’t know what to do. doctor told me to take time off and rest at home so that’s what ive been doing all day. the most strenuous activity i did was taking a shower. i dont know why nothing is working today so someone please give me advice, TIA!!

I have an uncomfortable pressure in my anus. There’s nothing external and it dosent hurt to poop. There’s no blood but I will sometimes rarely get a sharp electric shooting pain up my bum which hurts a lot and makes me jolt. When I don’t have the electric jolting pain it’s just a constant bruising uncomfortable feeling, not painful necessarily but just annoying. What it this!??

Hey everyone,
First of all, I will be going to the doctors for this but I just haven't gotten around to getting an appointment yet.
I, (21 FtM), have had issues with my breathing while being asleep for around a year or so now. When it started it was mainly stress induced I believe but around a year ago I used to wake up every night due to feeling like I stopped breathing or actively stopping, mainly while laying on my back. I would always wake up and it happened maybe once every 1-2 weeks (except one week where it happened every night). As a kid I had multiple tests done for my sleep and nothing ever showed.
Now, I do not wake up struggling to breathe anymore so I assumed it went away but my boyfriend recently moved in with me and told me he noticed I occasionally would "hold my breath" for a few seconds at night, I just seem to not notice this anymore.
Now the past weeks I've struggled to wake up, no amount of alarms wake me and I don't remember turning them off, I must be but I have absolutely no memory of ever waking up and when I do I'm struggling to keep my eyes open at all.
Is it likely to be connected or am I in that sense just a tight sleeper? Does anyone have any recommendations regarding my breathing issue as well as struggling to wake up for my alarms?
Thank you in advance.

Hii I usually avoid sleeping meds because they trigger panic attacks. However, I took a NyQuil severe two nights ago. I felt okay, just sluggish yesterday but much worse today despite sleeping well/not taking the drug. I feel almost if I am on drugs and am going to vomit. Has this happened to anyone else ? Thanks !

Sorry, i typed this for gemini to give a differential, but figured its a pretty good summary so please excuse it being in medspeak.
16 month old caucasian female. history of reactive airway disease. hospitalized in early september for pneumonia and increased WOB. frequent viral infections since infancy, primarily targeting lungs. robust in size, 35" tall and 29lbs. gaining weight normally. appetite relatively normal. mother reports increase in water consumption in the past week or so. since Sunday 10/18, patient is experiencing frequent fevers. will be afebrile for a few hours, and then spike for a few hours. no other viral symptoms, no rash, runny nose, cough, etc. strictly fever. mother reports that when child is febrile, she is clingy and her energy is very low. seems to worsen at night. child also has peed through her diaper overnight 4x in the past week, which seems unusual for her. she is sleeping through the night as usual. mother also reports a few instances of the patients fingers/nailbeds turning blue for short periods of time. capillary refill to the extremities also seems slow, averaging 4-6 seconds. last night, mother reports that her child seemed to have increased WOB for a short period based on retractions at the base of her neck, but dissipated before bed. no wheezing or any other respiratory symptoms.
per the advisement of her pediatricians office, we are taking her to a hospital-affiliated urgent care this afternoon to get her in front of a doctor today.
my main concern is that we are missing something here. i know kids get viruses all of the time, but something is screaming from my gut telling me that there is something else going on.
located in USA.

I just recently moved and therefore started to see a new dentist. They were recommended to me by a friend and generally they felt like a good office.
I have a couple fillings and my new dentist says they want to renew them. I already had one side done now since I had pain, but the other side has no issues yet.
I don't know how old my current fillings are tbh. But the process with numbing, needles etc was fairly unpleasant. Plus, in total I have to pay 400$. So I am thinking of cancelling the second (also more expensive) treatment.
Is renewing fillings normal/necessary?

My 6-year-old son spent 3 hours in a classroom with extremely strong fumes from glossy paint, possibly oil-based or epoxy. The entire school had been painted, and the children returned despite the strong smell.
Parents were outraged and filed formal complaints with the relevant authorities. Some children reportedly experienced breathing difficulties.
my child’s eyes was red, I got really scared and took him to the doctor. His chest exam was normal, and the doctor reassured us that everything was fine. He has been acting normally, but I’m still worried.
What happened today was genuinely traumatic for me. Even though my child is okay, I feel shaken and can’t seem to move past what happened. I just want to stop worrying and feel at peace again.

I’m 21F, and for about a month I’ve been experiencing some really strange and terrifying physical symptoms that are genuinely starting to take over my life.
It started with these sudden episodes of an overwhelming sinking or dropping sensation throughout my entire body. The closest comparison I can make is the feeling when a roller coaster suddenly drops, except I’m completely still. Sometimes it feels like my heart is dropping, or like a giant weight is pressing down on my chest, head, back and entire body. I genuinely feel like I’m about to collapse, although I’ve never actually fainted.
Along with this, I’ve been experiencing chest pain, heart palpitations, and a strange sensation when taking deep breaths. I can physically breathe deeply, but sometimes it feels like my breath stops around my sternum.
I also get this bizarre woozy, almost drunk or disconnected feeling. It’s not typical room-spinning dizziness, and my vision doesn’t go black. I just feel physically off, heavy and unstable, almost like I’m not fully present in my body and feel wobbly like I’m gonna trip even though I am actually walking perfectly normal.
Initially, these were isolated episodes that happened completely randomly, including while I was relaxed in bed. They would eventually disappear, and I’d feel completely normal afterward.
However, over the past couple of weeks, things have gotten progressively worse. After two frightening ER visits, the episodes became much more frequent, and now I’m experiencing these sensations practically every single day, sometimes with lingering symptoms between episodes.
It’s gotten to the point where I haven’t been able to workout anymore (I did daily) because I’m too scared of how I’m feeling. I’m experiencing these sensations while I’m at work, trying to get through an entire shift, smiling and talking to customers on the outside while internally feeling like I’m about to collapse.
I recently celebrated my birthday with friends, and even then, while everyone was having fun, I was sitting there terrified because I genuinely felt like my heart was going to stop or I was about to pass out.
I’ve even started sleeping in my mom’s bed because I’m so scared something will happen to me at night. The strange thing is that once I actually fall asleep, I sleep through the entire night without any problems. Even if I feel absolutely awful before bed, I wake up feeling completely normal. But shortly after I get up and start my day, the sensations begin all over again.
The symptoms are also incredibly inconsistent. I’ve been able to walk for hours and do physically demanding work without any issues, yet other times I feel terrible just sitting or lying down.
I’ve been to the ER twice and have undergone quite extensive testing:
-Multiple ECGs, normal rhythm
-Normal troponin, electrolytes, thyroid bloodwork and other routine blood tests.
-Normal chest X-rays.
-Normal CT pulmonary angiogram with contrast.
-Normal echocardiogram.
-Exercise stress test where my heart rate approached 200 but the rhythm remained normal.
-Several hours of continuous heart monitoring in the hospital without an abnormal rhythm being identified.
-A four-day Holter monitor that I just finished wearing. Results are pending, but I experienced one of my typical sinking episodes while wearing it.
-Normal oxygen saturation during my medical assessments.
I’ve never dealt with daily anxiety or panic attacks in my life, which is why I’m having such a hard time understanding how this could possibly be anxiety. I know anxiety can cause physical symptoms, and I understand that being frightened of these episodes might be making things worse, but the physical sensations usually come first. They happen even when I’m completely relaxed, happy, or distracted.
At this point, I genuinely don’t know what to do anymore. I feel like my life has been put on hold. I’m scared to exercise, scared to be alone, and constantly worrying about when the next episode will happen. I’m trying so hard to continue with my normal routine, but internally I feel awful. It has quite literally been an every single day occurrence !!
I’m waiting for my Holter results and following up with my family doctor, but until then, I feel completely stuck. Every emergency test I’ve had so far has come back reassuring, and nobody seems to know why I’m feeling this way or what to investigate next.
I’m grateful that nothing serious has been found, but it’s also incredibly frustrating to feel this physically unwell every day without an explanation.

My 6 month old daughter’s pediatrician is suspecting that she is having drop seizures and we are supposed to be having an EEG and an MRI soon to confirm it but I am terrified of how this might impact her future. If you have any experience with these seizures how does it impact your life? What was the cause of the seizures in your case? Are they manageable? Any information about this would be greatly appreciated.
