मला १० वर्षांपूर्वी विष्णू अवताराची दुसरी गोष्ट माहीत झाली ती म्हणजे विठ्ठल = कृष्ण, कारण दोघेही काळे सावळे आहेत.

विष्णू > विठू हे उत्तर भारतीय संस्कृती मध्ये दक्षिणेतील देवांना विलीन करण्यासाठी झालं असावे. विंध्य आणि दंडकारण्य हे नैसर्गिक फाळणी करत होते. आपले देव नंतर त्रिमूर्ती मध्ये अवतार म्हणून प्रसार केला गेला.

खूप विशेष नाही रे... महाराष्ट्र आणि त्याची भाषा, संस्कृती, देव हे वेगळे होते. आपल्याकडे ग्राम दैवत होते जे ब्रह्म विष्णू महेश चे अवतार न्हवते.

जेव्हा कधी २ वेगळ्या सभ्यता एकत्र येतात, त्यामध्ये काही प्रमाणात देवन घेवण होते, नवे सृजन होते. मग आपले देव कसे overall Hindu pantheon मध्ये फिट होतात ते करून कालांतराने खंडोबा हा शिव व पांडुरंग हा विष्णू म्हणून एकत्रीकरण झाले.

गुप्त, यादव, राष्ट्रकुट काळामध्ये (४–१३ CE) मध्ये आपले लोकल ग्रामदेवता, पशुपालक देवता, वीरगळ, खंडोबा, म्हसोबा, बिरोबा, भैरोबा, वाघोबा, चेडा आणि बरेच देव, ह्यांचे शैव आणि वैष्णव पंथी मध्ये assimilation झाले.

Hey thank you so much for the reply. I see it’s similar to how adoption of deities like Murugan or Jagannath work. But I’m curious as to why Vitthal in particular stands out as one of the most widely worshipped deities in Maharashtra, also if it is supposed to be an understanding of Vishnu what’s that link?

I'll try to give a logical and an emotional response to that.

After the first showers and sowing the seeds, the farmers (and everyone related to agrarian work) had a lot of spare time till the crop grows. So to keep people busy in that period, the pilgrimage began, culminating on ashadhi ekadashi. By the time they return back to villages, the crops grow with monsoon.

The growth in popularity is due to the Bhakti movement in the 10-14 century, where various saints added to the spiritual growth of our people.

Our saints treat Vitthal as a god, friend, counsellor, sometimes even get angry with him etc. So it's a very simple and complicated worship.

The Vishnu angle is something that percolated with growing Hindu influence.

Just like there are stories and characters in Egyptian folklore which were later assimilated into the Bible. Appropriation of 'gods' is more common than we think!

मला जो अर्थ माहीत आहे : “वि” इति ज्ञान (‘वेद’ मधील ‘विद’ चा कदाचित तोच मूळ शब्द असावा) आणि “स्थल” इति ठिकाण, स्थल चा अपभ्रंश “ठ्ठल” hence विठ्ठल.

I had a question about another word origin related to Vitthala! Does anyone know the meaning of कानडा as in कानडा राजा पंढरीचा. कानडा is used a lot in relation to Vitthala but I never understood the meaning. Is it to do with 'Kannada' in relation to Karnataka?
