Misc Voting at the Mama Awards - why bother?
Voting for round 2 of the Mama Awards have opened. What this means is that MAMAMOO has successful gone through round 1 as one of the top 20 female choices.
Moomoos are generally quite a chilled bunch. We like good music, but we’re not really about being a crazy, obsessed fandom. So why should we bother with voting? It may also be getting on your nerves by this point. I also empathise with fans, especially from Europe, central and South America who have not had the chance to see MAMAMOO in concert.
1) So, why should I waste time voting?
Because it is meaningful encouragement.
One of the things humans need, is some form of positive affirmation. It helps us to keep going. Imagine if you’re MAMAMOO. And you find out you’re 25th out of 34 groups. How would you feel? Conversely, even if they dont get into the top 10 in the end, knowing fans voted for them, it’s a stream of positivity.
As performers, fan support is primary feedback.
2) why should any music be defined by awards?
Isn’t the best validation that they are respected for good music? Isn’t that enough? Why chase awards? Is self worth premised on such ostentatious displays?
Well because as entertainers, recognition is lifeblood. A restaurant can serve the best burgers in the world. But without customers vouching for it, it may still eventually fold. In contrast, McDonald’s flourish even though no one thinks it’s the best, because enough people support them.
Being nominated, being well-placed - these occurrences puts a group into public consciousness. People are still reminded of Mamamoo, talk about them, and introduce them to new fans. I am a new moomoo. I only found out about Mamamoo this year. Why? Because as much as i dislike kpop, I saw a viral video of Hwasa at the Blue Dragons last year. Which led me to a video of MAMAMOO at the 2019 mama awards. Which led me to become a fan.
Publicity is a currency for any entertainment group to survive, find new opportunities, and new fans.
3) It takes a lot of effort. I have a life. I don’t have time for this.
Voting is actually quite easy, and after the first vote, becomes quite automatic. You become familiar with the process and you can finish voting in 15 seconds. All it takes is:
- download the Mnet plus app and sign up for an account. This takes 1 min
- once you’re in the app, you don’t even need to find the voting page. There will be a pop-up inviting you to vote at the mama awards.
- you just pick a fav male, female, and fan choice option. I don’t know nor care about any male kpop group. So I just picked one at random. And then MAMAMOO for the other 2.
- it’s true that some users may face an ad immediately after you click vote. Most times, the ad will have an option to close after running for 10-20seconds. If you do not find a close button, this is a well known bug of the Mnet plus app. What I normally do is just to close the app and restart. Because the previous 2 steps are so easy, this takes 5 seconds. Usually, on the 2nd try, the ad can be closed. Your vote will then be registered, and you get a confirmation.
I completely understand if this is not for you, which is completely fine! But if you’re thinking of voting, just give it a shot. Personally, I felt that I received quite a lot of encouragement listening to some of their music and watching some of their videos, so I just wanted to reciprocate that encouragement, in a small and costless way.
