General Discussion Controversial take: Unreadable cards should be banned from competitive formats.

I am Brazilian and have been playing MTG for years (Started way back in mirage) being off an on the game over the years, played Standard a long time ago (Ravnica/Bolas block) and recently a friend of mine tried to convince me to play Pauper with him on tournaments. I tried and hated the experience to the point that it made me give up on MTG competitive formats entirely and here's why:

I played against a couple of people running Japanese Mystical Archive cards, cards I can't read or validate, I don't give a shit if it's a staple card like Opt or Thoughtseize, it's important to me to read the cards that are played against me even if it's the 100000000 time I am reading the same card I have been playing against for over a decade, if you play a card against me I should be able to read it, and I shouldn't be expected to just go with the guy playing a card in japanese and saying, oh it's thoughtseize dude. On the second guy playing japanese cards on the round right after I scooped and dropped out of the tournament. The discussion came from the fact that I went to the store to play EDH on the same day of a pauper tournament a few weeks later and when I went in they were excited to see me because apparently there was not enough people to run the weekly tournament and they thought maybe I went there to play, but I told them I dropped the format and had no interest in playing and why, the two guys that ran japanese cards were mad and the others were just disappointed. I like playing card games and reading is essential to play the fucking card game, why would I play a text based game that has text I can't read???

My opinion is that on competitive tournaments players should only be allowed to play cards in their native language or english. If I am playing against a french guy using french cards it's fine, I would not have a problem with that. I have no problem with UB or anything or alt arts in general, for casual play it doesn't really matter and it adds collection, I think a lot of "normal" cards would be more expensive if there wasn't a much more expensive version of it and that is good. Not in competitive play tho.

Scheduled Thread Wound-Up Wednesdays - Vent here!

Aren't you tired of being nice? Don't you just wanna go apeshit?

Got a burning rage deep within your soul? Perhaps you've been countered for the eleven billionth time. Aggro is ruining your win streak on Arena. Your friend keeps complaining about being targeted whenever they play a stax deck and you're just sick of it. There's some guy at your LGS who never showers. Standard is dying at your LGS and it's upsetting. Or maybe you just feel like Universes Beyond will KILL MAGIC.

Whatever is eating away at your heart, unleash it here!

(Please refrain from insulting other users even if you think their gripes are silly. This is a safe place to vent. Memetic responses are welcome provided you're not degrading anyone.)

Official Spoiler Behold, the weirdest render issue I've seen in a while.

Noticed the promo versions of Federation Resupply and Leonard "Bones" McCoy didn't line up perfectly at the bottom, but they DO line up perfectly at the top. No clue what's going on there, and it's probably just a render issue, but it's... interesting.

EDIT: so I don't have to reply to every comment - the issue is printing wise, this is asking the printer machine, that's supposed to place the holofoil stamp in the same place every time - to specifically put it elsewhere for McCoy. If this isn't a rendering issue, it's such an expensive decision to move the textbox down instead of up, and it can't be for space cause they also moved the typeline down which would defeat the point. If it's not a render issue, it's so odd and frankly unprecented.

General Discussion only one foil in commander precons from now on?

I just saw that with the Star Trek Precons, there is only one foil commander card.

Will that be an ongoing and if so, WTF? Was this announced somewhere?

Looking for Advice I am looking for an affordable, cute deck

Hello! My name is An and I'm completely new to Magic, so I'm not sure where to start. I know there's a format called Commander, and I'd love to build a cute Commander deck! I saw the Hatsune Miku one, but I think it's pretty hard to get. Is there anything cute and similar out there? I would love to know!

Thanks!!

Universes Beyond - Discussion Is it just me, or is it genuinely weird how few Voyager characters have been spoiled?

We have multiple of everyone from TNG and TOS (except Wesley Crusher.) We have almost the whole DS9 cast. We have most of the Discovery cast. We have most of the Enterprise cast. We have a significant part of the Prodigy cast. We have all four Lower Deckers.

Voyager, aside from today’s commander spoilers, he have Janeway, Seven and the Doctor. That’s it.

Where the heck are the main set Neelix, B’Elanna, Tom, Harry, Chakotay? Where’s the Delta Flyer and Voyager herself? Are they going to get cards? Are they just spoiling them all last for some reason? It seems like a super weird choice to hold them all until the end like this.

General Discussion Finding games as an adult

I’ve gotten way more into Magic lately and honestly one of the most frustrating parts has been finding people to actually play with.
My area just doesn’t seem to have a huge MTG scene. There are a couple stores around, but it feels pretty scattered and unless you already know people it can be tough finding a Commander game.
I have a few friends that play, but getting everyone together at the same time is basically impossible lol.
Anyone else deal with this? How do you actually find people near you to play with? Do you just show up at card shops, use Facebook groups, Discord, etc?
I feel like I’m spending almost as much time trying to find a game as I am actually playing

Looking for Advice Clueless - help with gifting please!

My husband has recently gotten WAY into Magic. I’m talking we get cards in the mail almost daily that he’s ordered to custom make decks, and he plays weekly.

We do stockings for each other every year, and I want to get him something related that he will actually like or use. Specific info I know;

- He has a lot of the Hobbit and Final Fantasy cards.
- He has dice but he’s not super attached to them
-He has a mat that is Hobbit themed
- has sleeves and a deck box that is also hobbit themed (sensing a pattern? lol)

Budget is $45ish or less. I have gotten him a little catapult that launches dice. I thought about a life counter? Is that a thing? Any other advice or ideas would be great. Please help! Thank you!!

General Discussion Questions regarding Magic Conventions

TL; DR: Is it worth it?

I am considering going to an upcoming convention, but I have some reservations. I would like to get some input from people who have attended Magic Cons and to get a better idea of what to expect.

Our goal:

Our current idea is to purchase a 1-day badge (due to their work schedule keeping them from attending multiple days). His main motivation is that he would like to buy a Mystery Booster Commander box and not have to pay scalper prices. My main reason to go is to purchase uncommon Magic cards/merch that might be exclusive or more readily available at an event like this (signed playmats, etc.). Also to possibly meet some artists, or mtg content creators that I'm a fan of. Neither of us are very interested in playing commander games with random people since we both already play together and have our own pods and have the opportunity to play with new people at our LGS.

Questions/concerns:

What is the general vibe of going to these things?

Is it a lot of standing in line hoping to get a chance to meet people and buy products before they sell out?

Are things readily available or is it mostly first come, first serve?

Are prices jacked similar to going to a sporting event?

Are our goals reasonable?

Do you feel worn out if you attend multiple days?

I'm sure there are plenty of other factors we haven't considered but I'd like to hear from you all so we can determine how invested we need to be.

Thank you for taking the time to read and reply.

General Discussion Discussion topic: can the "Annihilator" keyword exist in a bracket 2/"precon" level?

Hello friends

In today's day and age, how does Annihilator fair? I just bought all of the Foundations precons, and I wanted to build a 6th colorless "precon" to go with it. My original vision was to "make a bunch of mana, and then dump it into... something." My thought was to use cheap/"bad" mana rocks and ramp pieces such as [[Navigation Orb]], [[Worn Powerstone]], and [[Kozilek's Channeler]] to make big mana, and then dump it into whatever the win conditions are.

Right now, I think cards such as [[Stonecoil Serpent]] and [[Everflowing chalice]] are examples of good "mana dumps," along with cards such as [[Hangerback Walker]] and [[Marketback Walker]] as more precon-level mana dumps. However, I was also gonna just add mana expensive cards, cards that you wouldn't play in most other decks cuz their mana value is normally too much for its effect, such as [[Zuko's Exile]], [[Meteor Golem]], and [[Scampering Surveyor]]

All that to say, [[Pathrazer of Ulamog]], [[Artisan of Kozilek]], and [[Eldrazi Conscription]] are example of high-mana targets that also have annihilator. Could these kind of cards ever exist in a precon-level deck, even one of them, as a win con, or is it too much for a new player to fight against?

Looking for Advice Any tips for me as a new player to MTG?

I've only played maybe 5-6 times and am still very new to the game.

I play with my friends and use this proxy deck here that I love since Magik is my favorite marvel character!

Any tips about MTG or this deck that would make me better. :)

Official Story/Lore With star trek's Borgs out, why are they Artifacts but Phyrexians not?

I understand an aspect of it was for gameplay and balance but many pointed out it could be due to Phyrexians having also flesh parts and once living beings. To me Borgs feel even less artifacts than most phyrexians do.

Looking for Advice Looking for a deck coming from yugioh

Hello, I am new to MTG and I am looking for a deck/strategy/color combo that would play similarly to Fire King or Unchained in yugioh. I like resource generation/recursion through destroying your own cards.

I also like graveyard based strategies in yugioh as well and both Fire King or Unchained like to play from the graveyard as well.

Also noting I am going to start playing MTG on MTG Arena, if that matters

Thanks for the help!

Looking for Advice Help me with Sauron..

I am building a Sauron deck for a buddy, but don’t know if I’m heading in the right direction. Wanting to lean into the tempt mechanic for the sake of card draw and Nazgûl buffing, with some support for discard/reanimation. Any suggestions or help appreciated! I started the list with the precon and have not really paid too much mind to the lands yet, so feel free to ignore that aspect. Bugdet isn’t the biggest concern as a few of us buds are going to split the cost, but not looking to increase the cost significantly here as we already have some $$$ heat, but again, please share any ideas

Looking for Advice Building a MTG Battle Box.

Post image
9 Upvotes

I’m working on building a Battle Box of MTG decks. I’ve been out of the game for about 10 years, but still enjoy the gameplay. So my idea is to build a playset that can be a grab and go style of decks. We will have 2 decks representing each of the colors with two separate themes. And then 1 deck for each of the two color combos and then 1 no-color deck. This gives us a 21 deck pyramid.

I would like some input on best/favorite themes for each color/ color combination. Also any specific cards that you like.

The main idea/concept is to include powerful cards that never made it into constructed play.
Like Drogskol Reacer, a mythic card that can take
Over a game if allowed, but was easily remover in constructed play.
