Official Spoiler [TRC] Kes, Evolving Telepath

Nine time counters because Ocampans only live nine years.

I thought it was 6? Did it change during the show or just bad memory on my part?

u/DarnOldMan 13h ago
I think 9 is old age, probably 6-9 is average. But then they meet some ocampans that are like 12 at one point.

It was 9 for Kes' group, but it's implied that the underground bunker they were being kept was insufficient for their needs - they meet another group of the same species later that lived up to 20-25 years

Well that's fucking dark. Honestly surprised they printed a Kes card. Peak 90s "deeply weird and problematic, but it's sci-fi so it's fine" character.

Good sci-fi usually tackles contemporary problems in a futuristic setting.

True, but exploring the concept of adult relationships with a much older partner can be done without the need to take things to such an extreme. Kes and Nelix's relationship was weird and unnecessary.

u/Great-Trifle2810 12h ago
Also they never really treat her relationship with neelix as problematic. He is occasionally kind of a jerk to her but this isn't portrayed as him taking advantage of her or anything and there are definitely other crew members that would smash.
In fact in a time travel episode there is an alternative future where she married Tom and then Harry married their daughter.
The show just expects you to view her as a young adult woman, not a child or anything

I mean, it becomes the problem of "putting human morals against alien life forms that do not confirm to those morals". Time is relative; if humans only lived to be like 30 (and developed sexually relative to this) we probably wouldn't see dating/marriage at 8 as weird, because it's relative.

"What if this toddler was actually really sexy, and had vaginas for ears?"
Well, when you're right, you're right.

Some timey-wimey shenanigans you can do with this and the Doctor Who cards

I came here to talk about this card being bad, but you've reminded me that I have a Tenth Doctor deck so whoops lol.

u/Altruistic_Bottle793 10h ago
Right? Keeping her at a 7-8 counters with time travel and drawing a bunch every turn sounds super neat, and you can cheat her out with suspend. I will definetly try her.

Really interesting that they didn't make any kind of "psychic" creature type. If they didn't do it for this set they probably never will.

u/Doomgloomya 14h ago
Probrably because magic exists so Jace would have always been a psychic if they tried to introduce that

With [[The Tenth Doctor]], [[Fury Charm]], and several other "Time Travel" spells and effects, you can effectively stymy Kes' proverbial "departure" for quite a while. She's not a bad addition to the 99/98 of any Suspend deck, especially given her mv of 5.
Gotta love time counters!

Just stuff her in an [[Assault Suit]], and she'll be drawing all the cards you could possibly want*
*try not to deck out before lab man or jace is out tho lol

Kess starts breaking down due to old age? Straight into the Dreadnought armor!

When [[Quirion Ranger]] came out we all called it Kes because we thought the art looked a lot like Jennifer Lien.

I think im still playing [[Insight Engine]] over this because it has better combo potential and is slightly harder to remove.

Works great with [[O'aka, Traveling Merchant]]

Even in a Tidus deck. He can jack up her counters as much as possible then move them off in the combat phase.

...couldn't get any more creative with the art direction here? You have a card about manipulating time counters and it's just a lady standing there in front of a desktop background. This set is so bizarre art-wise.
