My mom has probably her oldest picture of my dad stuck at some 4.35 billion years from now. I mean, it’s pretty sweet but I would like to try and fix that for her if the phone didn’t crash every single time.

I wouldn't be suprised if they're mostly bots. As the recent Russian server attacks taught us, the world might be less crazy than it first appears. Lots of astroturfing.

The only real change would be that one side has writing in funny letters.
... And it's not the side you're expecting.
11
u/Plutarch_von_Komet 12d ago
They are beautiful funny letters, so it's a Greek W

u/Zealousideal_Lock_93 12d ago
You mean ω? This is a lowercase o
1
u/Mr_gihed_gen6 11d ago
Ω ω and Ο ο. Ωμέγα (omega) and Όμικρον (omikron) are different letters but pronounced the same in modern greek.

As a Tunisian, I can tell you, people are diverse AF there. You can find people with blue eyes and yet are as Tunisian as can be. Hell, I'm white AF though that's cause I'm part Russo-Tatar.
I know why people have this idea of what we look like, but also I do not understand it in the slightest.

u/FncMadeMeDoThis 12d ago
Its because people think land connects, when for thousands of years it was water. They look at a map and think Italy is Closer to germany, not understanding that before the invention of Trains the Mediterranean was the highway, and people had exchanged culturally for thousands of years around the Mediterranean.
13
u/Comfortable-Race-755 12d ago
While you are definitely correct about the fact that Mediterranean was the ancient highway, you sort of left out the fact that for the most of history, It was controlled by European/Roman powers (which is why the Romans called it Mare Nostrum= Our Sea). Meaning that the Europeans were able to transfer a lot more of their "culture" and genes to the south and east o Mediterranean than vice-versa. It was not so much an equal trade, more like land theft (Cartago and Egypt, while not Roman, definitely serve as an example), Slave trade and pillaging
10
u/FncMadeMeDoThis 12d ago
Mare nostrum is at best 600-700 years old, which leaves several millenia of recorded history. Cultural exchanges happened a plenty during the bronze age and hellenistic period as well. Nor did the exchange exactly stop during the middle ages, where entities like bohemia were backwaters for being secluded by landmass. Landtheft, slavery and other imperialistic tendencies played a part in it certainly, but again that's because the sea gave access far more than landmass. Access that also included trade and other more "equal" exchanges.

I never understood why people say stuff like to speculate, implying there are no genetic studies publicly available on the internet. Southern Spaniards are closer to Swedish people than to North Moroccans
1
u/FncMadeMeDoThis 9d ago
Genetics don't correspond 1:1 with phenotypes. Generational enviroment plays just as large a role as genetics. Hence why there are amazigh tribes that have blue eyes and blonde hair by living in mountainous regions for generations. Mediterrenean people look like each-other, because the coastal people share by and large an enviroment far closer to each-other than to Swedens dark winters. It's why you will jave Egyptians from the coastal cities looking more like europeans and inland egyptians looking more sudanese.

u/Mojert 12d ago
As somebody that's part Tunisian, I can also say that people all around the Mediterranean are all pretty similar. I don't know about you, but by looking at me some people thought I was Spanish, some Italian, and some other Greek. I also have an Italian friend who people often think is Lebanese

In Italy if you have pale skin during the summer people will roast you. The stigma against people who don’t get a tan between May and September is ridiculous

As a romanian, this is funny. But also many people's views about romania(easter europe in general) is stuck in the 90's-2000's, it's not like this anymore
58
u/lnTheGrimDarkness 12d ago
Also, I can guarantee you most big cities in developed countries will be like that. With a central, clean, rich area and then dilapidated peripheries because poor people live there and nobody cares.
Signed: a non-Romanian that lives in a developed country in a city that looks just like that.

u/Sector-Difficult 12d ago
to be fair im from eastern europe and some parts still look like that.
23
u/AssOfRat 12d ago
Also from Eastern Europe. It's a result of zero care about maintenance of districts and buildings that used to be the pride of the region.
Look at Athens from decades ago. When the buildings were first built around the city centre, the architecture and mood was almost regal. Now it's rotten.
14
u/RaiderCat_12 12d ago
It’s funny to read up on this, because I saw pictures of a beautiful Art Nouveau villa that was left to fucking rot almost in the centre of Bucharest just yesterday
4
u/AssOfRat 12d ago
Yup. People from the region probably have some sort of experience with this no matter where they're from.
Sofia and its cobblestone streets used to be so beautiful :(

Do you have any idea how fucking expensive it is to renovate even something like an apartment building?
It naturally should fall on the people living there, but they wouldnt have the money, so the state should maybe try to help, until you look at the numbers and figure out it would bankrupt the whole country if everything were to be made neat and pretty.
1
u/AssOfRat 12d ago
Renovating an apartment is not a reasonable comparison, and a lot of those buildings were built by the Crown that was later appropriated by the state anyway.
Either way I don't think you can complain about lack of funds. The mafias that run the Balkans and eastern Europe in general seem to be well fed.
Also, it's literally cultural heritage. If you can't take care of it at least demolish it and sell the land.
2
u/MammothAd8632 12d ago
Eastern European too here. That photo makes me feel at home.

The image shows a high-angle view over the Montserrat neighborhood in Buenos Aires, Argentina, looking across dense urban rooftops toward the central business district

u/MammothAd8632 12d ago
Neat. I mean irs just the brutalist and unkempt architecture that does it for me.

it's not like this anymore.
It wasn't like that in the first place, but stereotypes be stereotyping.

u/Jealous-Nature837 12d ago
People's views about literally everywhere in the world that isn't USA/Canada, Australia/New Zealand, western europe and developed asian countries is stuck in the 90's - 2000's and some in the 60s - 70s.
1
u/DeManDeMytDeLeggend 12d ago
There are a couple parts especially of the southern Balkans and Ukraine that are a bit like that stereotype but in general most of Eastern Europe looks like most of Western Europe nowadays, yeah

You might be right, while they are physically present, the drivers aren't stopping to let people pass, so they might as well not exist.
