#LinuxMintThings Idaho DMV uses Mint
Was at the DMV for my license and realized all their stuff runs on Mint! Thought that was kinda silly

Why is it silly? I used Mint Cinnamon for the same purpose for the past few years at my business. We just mounted a mini pc behind a large monitor, logged into the software's web page and let it run. Used the same set up for security camera monitors.

Silly because I figured they'd run w10 or some enterprise Fedora/SUSE based Linux. The actual exams are run on w10 AIO PCs

IT DATABASE SUPPORT TICKET Friday 4:34PM: please install a kiosk queue display system in the DMV. Set it up so we can adjust it as needed. Something like this web page (poorly focused iPotato phone photo of page without URL or any other info attached). There is no budget but we have an old TV 32" in the break room that was going to be recycled but you can use that until an 8k 100"+ screen can be sourced so Gary the blind potato farmer can see when it's time for his eye test. Can you have this installed by end of day? Our take a number/call a number system is out of paper and refills are expensive and back ordered.

I'm not the commenter, but I assume it's a funny (and painful) tale of how signs like that come to be. The story certainly reached me and dragged me back to IT experiences of years past.

Please tell Gary that by definition, walk-in's are people who don't have an already scheduled appointment.
In Mate, I can right mouse click on the panel, go to properties and check 'Autohide'.

Keep your eyes open as you wander around and you will see a lot of Linux-based, purpose-built systems in business, medical, financial, government and education environments.
Mint is a bit unusual (most of the systems I see are built on the Canonical ecosystem) but if Mint works as a front end, more power to it.
The systems are built and maintained by vendors for large-scale, paying customers. The vendor business can be very profitable, as an retired friend of mine will happily tell you when he isn't buzzing around in his Lamborghini.
My best.

How do I get into building vendor systems with linux? I wonder if that has a market in my city....

You'd be surprised how far you can get by calling them directly. If you can save people money and you're not pushy about it, people want to listen to you.

I saw it used at a restaurant a few months ago for a menu. 3 screens as images and one of them wasn't maximized and could see the taskbar.
If it saves a few hundred dollars in Windows licenses, why not save it and put it towards something else?

A stable, lightweight operating system that won't reboot on you for no reason and can be run on an actual chunk of asphalt... electricity optional.
Makes sense to me.

I'm not entirely sure why....but it's fun to see Linux in unexpected places!
