Linux Mint Xfce Saved This Laptop From Windows 10

Post image

I installed Linux Mint Xfce. This laptop was running Windows 10 which was eating the resources of this laptop. The specs are pretty bad [1] but it was still usable up until recently where everything took forever and browsing the internet was not comfortable.

Linux made it usable again and the resource usage drop substantially.

This was my second time installing linux. I'm still a beginner so any tips would be appreciated and let me know your thoughts on this.

If anyone is browsing reddit considering installing Linux on an old machine, do it. it really makes a difference compared windows.

[1] Specs
CPU: Intel Celereon N3350 2.4ghz
GPU: Intel Hd Graphics 500 0.65ghz Integrated
Memory: 3.66GB
HDD

Windows 10 is pretty good, a clean install of that would probbly provide the same feeling. Anyways, I love Mint, it is a very nice clean distro (IMO). I use it on my 2017 Macbook Air. Enjoy the customization!!!

What DE you use? XFCE, Mate or Cinnamon. I use Cinnamon and frequently hit 100% CPU. More so while doing video calls + screen share or while opening multiple tabs.

I just tossed cinnamon on my older model Lenovo and it’s now running like a brand new machine , windows was chocking the HDD with all the unnecessary crap it constantly runs , I’ve messed around with LM for a good 3 hours between the day and a half I’ve had it and not one issue

Just installed Mint cinnamon on Lenovo IdeaPad 100-15IBY with 4GB and celeron n2840 feels smooth for now (it will be used mostly as Browser and Picture viewer) And Mint cinnamon (previously was on xfce but some kernel problem occured and I said to my self I don't care that laptop is 14 years old it's now or never) on Acer Aspire 5742zg 8gb with Pentium previously used for Python projects and pycharm currently used as drawing board for my 3 year old

W10 would have been alright if it had an SSD. Even linux mint takes a while to start up with a spinning drive.
