Resource Recommendation LearnFrench Resource List/Wiki Updates

Salut tlm !

After receiving an influx of posts with people asking for (or giving) resource recommendations, we have decided to collect these resource recommendations in a megathread here. The purpose of this thread is to collect genuine resource recs that the community found helpful, and the list will also be used to update parts of our wiki.

Top level comments should all be resources you would personally recommend to a learner. You may put more than one resource in your comment if it suits you. It would be helpful if you included the following type of information:

  • The name of the resource and how to access it
  • What level of learner you think it suits (beginner, intermediate, advanced)
    • for example, is it a resource that was helpful to you as a beginner but as you got more proficient you kind of stopped using it
  • Which domain of language it is helpful for (reading, writing, speaking, listening, or the secret fifth thing of "knowledge about the language's construction itself" i.e. grammar and usage)
    • for example, a "grammar site," a dictee site (listening and writing), or a french news site (reading) all have certain focuses
    • if it is a specialised site (say a botanical dictionary or medieval french texts), you can note its specialty
  • If the resource is PAID or FREE
  • If you are affiliated with the resource in any way other than being a consumer/user, please note that in your comment. It will not count as advertising if you put the name of your resource here, however, our community values transparency so if we find out that you are affiliated with the resource you posted and you didn't disclose it, your comment may be deleted. This includes something you made, something you made for free, and things that you have an affiliate code with. It may include other things, depending on what kind of comments and resources are recommended.

One FINAL note, as this is about resources do not recommend tutors or offer specific tutoring services. Suggesting a platform (like iTalki or Preply) as a resource is fine, but saying "I tutor on Google Meet!" or "This is my iTalki tutor and he's the best!" are not.

Question People who learned French to B2 or above by self study

Hey,
I have few questions for you.
What syllabus did you follow?
How did you divide it into each day of study?
How long did it take(along with your hours per day)?
How did you stay consistent for that period?

Thank you. This will help me a lot.

Achievement Today I received my B2 certificate after 3 years of studying French 🥳

So it came in the post today, after sitting the exam a few months ago at my local Alliance Française. My native language is English and after failing hard at languages in school I never thought I could do this. But I started studying it as an adult for enjoyment and proved myself wrong! Last year I passed B1 and this year I got B2 (91/100). I probably could have passed them both sooner but I had anxiety and wanted to over-prepare and take more time before any exams. Happy to share my learning method if anyone wants to know.

First pic is my cert & second pic shows how long I’ve been learning French!

I’ve been to France to practice a few times since I started learning and each time it got easier and easier to navigate things there. I can now navigate a trip fully by myself speaking only French. Now I am burned out with all the revision and am keeping my learning alive while having fun, i.e. reading novels, watching French films and series etc. I’ll probably start studying for the C1 in a year or three.

I’m not sharing this to show off, but because I wanted to share my happiness with likeminded people, and also to inspire anybody who is working towards their exams right now. It is possible to pass with dedication! Don’t give up. Believe in yourself. I really didn’t think I could do this and turns out I could!

Decided to write this in English instead to make it accessible for beginners.

Vocabulaire : avoir besoin de = to need / ménage (m) = cleaning / règles (f pl) = rules / hôtes (m pl) = hosts / demander = to ask / retirer = to remove / draps (m pl) = sheets / lessive (f) = laundry / ranger = to put away / vaisselle (f) = dishes / poubelles (f pl) = trash

English translation

Airbnb guests will no longer have to do major cleaning before they leave. The new rules will apply to bookings made from November 20. Hosts will generally no longer be allowed to ask guests to remove bed sheets or do laundry before they leave. They also won’t be able to ask guests to wash and put away dishes. In addition, guests will not have to take out the trash. Airbnb says the major cleaning should be done by professionals.

Question Question for native speakers

I have seen a few reels on youtube and instagram about how native french speakers hate and sometimes behave rudely/harshly when someone speaks bad french , even if the person is making the best effort to speak properly. How true is this stereotype about french people. One thing i noticed is that most of these reels are based out of Paris so it could be limited to a particular city as well or may be social media influencers doing engagement farming. I am hoping this subreddit should be the right place to get answers about this thing

Speaking Practice Is it okay to pronounce ‘r’ sound in French as ‘r’ in red (English) ?

I am still confused about this sound. I hear many people pronounce it as ‘r’ in red for French words too.

However, I tried my best to pronounce it the way that French native speakers pronounce (at least in France I guess), but I am at B1 and due to my struggle with ‘r’, I feel more stressed forgetting what I am trying to say.

Also, I feel like I am stuck between trying to say it properly and rather using the English one. I have heard many people use it as English ‘r’ too (I think they are not native speakers but still got good scores in the exam). Is that correct? I don’t want to waste my time just learning to pronounce one sound so much that it hampers my overall learning. Please suggest.

Discussion I think I am just shy to talk in general, not because I don't practice enough French

Everyone who knows me in life knows that I'm a quiet person. Even when I'm surrounded by friends from my origin country, I mostly just listen to them talk and rarely respond back. At home, my husband often repeats things twice because I don't respond even when I hear and understand what he says.

Today I went out of a building that is known for passing French language tests.

As I exited the front door, there was this guy who passed by and suddenly asked me, "Tu as parlé un peu?"

I just smiled at him.

I really didn't know what to say.

I wasn't even there for a language test. We now have to pass examen civique too. And I just didn't know how to explain to him lol.

Besides, talking to a complete stranger, no matter which language, is not that easy for most people.

Question TCF Canada — Scored 9/20 in both Speaking and Writing. Need advice for my next attempt!

Thumbnail gallery
7 Upvotes

Hi everyone!
I recently received my results from my latest TCF Canada exam, and I’m looking for advice from people who have been in a similar situation.

I previously shared my TEF Canada results here. Since then, I’ve taken the TCF Canada twice, and these are my results from my most recent attempt:
Listening: 419 (B2)
Reading: 502 (C1)
Writing: 9/20 (B1)
Speaking: 9/20 (B1)

I’m honestly frustrated because I feel I’m very close to reaching my target. I need to improve my speaking and writing scores, even if it’s just by a few points.

For those who previously scored 9/20 in speaking and writing, did you manage to reach 10/20 or higher on your next attempt? What did you change in your preparation, and how long did you study before retaking the exam?

I took my exam at GBLC North York. I’m not sure whether the evaluation reflects my actual performance, especially in speaking, but I also want to understand what I might be doing wrong and how I can improve.

I would really appreciate any advice, especially from people who went through the same experience. If you have any specific strategies, resources, or tips for improving speaking and writing, please share them.
Thank you!

Question resources for anxiety around speaking french

Hello, I am wondering if any of you lovely people might be able to offer me some advice on learning french. I am an english speaker who lived in quebec and successfully graduated high school there but have always had great difficulty with the language and required taking an extra semester of adult education to be able to get my high school diploma. one of the main problems I have is that I get terribly nervous when I need to actually speak to another person in french. I recently revisted my home town with a friend who was excited to speak to some people and use her novice french skills when ordering food and I got so overwhelmed and scared that I left without ordering because the thought of attempting to speak in french had filled me with so much fear I started to cry. I feel quite bad about my inability and nerves around speaking. So this sparked me to look for resources in order to learn french. I am not as bad at reading or writing french alone, but I really have no idea how to get over this anxiety for speaking. have any of you people had this issue?

Question My college is starting a new Frenchclass coming sem, not sure if I should sign up

It's not mandatory to sign up for But my college is starting a new french class in the next semester for 60 contact hours and get me to A1 level proficiency Not sure if that's worth it cuz that's all the class does is get me to A1 level proficiency and just that

I can't take it again or get further from there

I'm a CS student with no plans to leave India (where I'm from) but thought it might be useful to know french if i manage to get into a firm that outsources french production cuz imo french is widely spoken than the other options

The other options are german and japanese

Question How's my pronunciation and what can I fix?

It's a short clip of me singing Tendre Rêve, I'm aware I messed up the song, but don't mind that please. You may need to turn the audio up.

What can I improve based on this short clip? Any tips?
As you can probably tell from the clip, I struggled with the pronunciation of "cœurs" and "creux" the most. I did look up their pronunciation prior before attempting to sing it, but I feel like it's hard to keep the "r" soft and even though the "c" is supposed to sound like a hard "k". When I say the word, it feels out of place, like I'm speaking and all of a sudden, I'm emphasizing the letter too strongly? Is it supposed to be like this? Thanks. :)

Resource Recommendation Basic French Medical Terminology

Bonjour à tous,

Perhaps a strange question. At my day job, I use french to help new to the country and who have been here for a while to know what and how to do things in a banking or simple financial fashion: how your checking account works, what a statement is. How a credit score works, what can harm your credit, and etc. I am not the only person at my workplace that speaks french. At my office along we have myself and another who speaks french, I am self taught she is from a country that spoke it primarily, and we have 3 Spanish speakers.

My workplace encourages volunteering and we are in a hub with many french speaking immigrants. My office is able to help those french speakers, but some of the surrounding services aren't able to. There is a volunteer medical health clinic that also serves these french speakers of the community; however, they lack translators. I have been working with this volunteer organization to see about having me and my colleague volunteer (we have other offices that also have french speakers), but while I am fluent in simple finance terms, I am not to sure about health related topics.

My primary focus is aiding my community, but would anyone have any recommendations for french health terms? On my call with the volunteer coordinator they mentioned some of the most common things off the top of their head being Diabetes, OB/GYN, and high blood pressure.

Question Help! Need Tutor to learn french for my UN career dreams

Hello!

My title pretty much sums it up. I've been working in climate and development for around 2 years and finally began thinking of moving towards working in the United Nations, one of my dream places to work in and I realised that French is not just one of the working languages, it is pretty much required with English everywhere.

So I am in a goal and hunt to learn French upto B1 or B2 proficiency - or working level proficiency - as soon as it is humanly possible.

I have a work schedule that is not very routine and I travel a lot for work so going to a class or online class commitment is really difficult.

I would love to work with a tutor to learn in a 1-on-1 basis. Preferably based in India solely for the reason that I can possibly only afford Indian rates - but if you are willing to negotiate with how much I can afford, I'd love to be open to tutors from anywhere in the world!

Please dm if you'd like to tutor me!
